Canadian Indian education is a complex problem in Canada's history. For the native people, education is the only way to preserve their cultural tradition. For the government, it has been the main means to assimilate the natives into the mainstream of the society. Because the majority culture has dominated Canadian society for more than two centuries, the Canadian federal government's policy and its making are the keys to understanding Indian education. In 1987 the Canadian government recognized that in order to be a major player in collective security with the United States and NATO, it would have to make a significant contribution to the common defense. However. since Canada could not hope to outspend the larger powers, its contribution would have to be leveraged by control of a strategic piece of real estate -- the Canadian Arctic. The major program to enhance Canadian control of the Arctic would be the acquisition of ten-to-twelve nuclear attack submarines. This exhibition began in 1986, when the University of Southern Maine received an extraordinary collection of rare maps, atlases, and globes donated by Lawrence M.C. and Eleanor Houston Smith. In 1987, in response to a call from the National Endowment for the Humanities for programs relating to the Columbian Quincentenary, the Maine Humanities Council submitted a proposal for the "Land of Norumbega" project.

This thesis attempts to discuss a unique political phenomenon in North America - successful Canadian socialism. The first part discusses a workable definition of ideology and a theoretical approach to the explanation of legitimate ideological diversity. The second part of the paper explains the socio-economic and political milieu of Western Canadian society in the early twentieth century and the evolution of a consequent Anglophone socialist movement in response to this environment. The third part discusses concurrent Francophone political phenomena.

Many French-speaking people came to the Pacific Northwest. Although most came from Quebec, some traveled from as far away as France, Belgium and Switzerland. When they arrived in Oregon Territory, a juxtaposition of three cultures merged to form a unique French-speaking community governed by a dominant Western Anglo-American character and a living Indian culture for daily subsistence. Most importantly, the French brought their own traditions from Quebec and France. Also, French individuality became altered upon their arrival and through their necessity to adapt to the strange, unknown wilderness of the Pacific Northwest. The purpose of this thesis is to critically examine the factors contributing to the rise and subsequent decline of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Upper Canada. Although the time period of this study spans from 1830 until 1850, the principal years of activity were from 1832 until 1840. An effort is made to discuss any major location wherein the Church made substantial progress.

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The pattern of service centers in Manitoba in 1872 and in 1886 is examined. Although a high correlation between transportation nodality and importance of service center is evident, this nodality is apparently a concomitant of service-center growth rather than a prime cause. The ideas of groups and individuals involved in promoting service-center growth seems to be the key to understanding this growth.

A 1943 U.S. government report detailing the enforced internment of west-coast Japanese-Americans during World War II. The Japanese internment began in February, 1942, two months after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Executive Order 9066 signed by President Roosevelt forcibly committed innocent Japanese-Americans to isolated internment camps in rural California, Utah and other midwestern states. Conditions were inadequate, overcrowding and unsanitary also lacking education and medical care. In 1945 the Supreme Court declared the internments illegal. A final report submitted by General J.L. DeWitt in April, 1942 utilized maps, photographs and other visuals to justify the internments. The report was …

This article commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Webster-Ashburton Treaty, which resolved a boundary dispute between the United States and British North American colonies (presently Maine and New Brunswick). The article includes exerpts of correspondence between the four Maine commissioners who agreed to a compromise. These letters were preserved by Edward Kavanaugh, the first Catholic U.S. Congressman elected from New England, and provide a glimpse into the diplomatic and peaceful resolution of an Early American territorial disagreement.
