At All Costs: The Stand Of The 16th Maine At Gettysburg, Bryan G. Caswell

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

The order to hold to the last, to continue fighting, to refuse to break no matter the cost, is often held to be a noble and heroic concept, especially in the Victorian context of the nineteenth century and the American Civil War. The most famous action of this kind at the Battle of Gettysburg is of course the stand of the 20th Maine on Little Round Top on July 2, 1863, which has been popularized through the writings of Michael Shaara and the 1993 film Gettysburg. The 20th Maine’s commanding officer, Col. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, reflects upon this unique …

Composing The Party Line: Music And Politics In Early Cold War Poland And East Germany, David G. Tompkins Sep 2013

Composing The Party Line: Music And Politics In Early Cold War Poland And East Germany, David G. Tompkins

Purdue University Press Books

This book examines the exercise of power in the Stalinist music world as well as the ways in which composers and ordinary people responded to it. It presents a comparative inquiry into the relationship between music and politics in the German Democratic Republic and Poland from the aftermath of World War II through Stalin’s death in 1953, concluding with the slow process of de-Stalinization in the mid- to late-1950s. The author explores how the Communist parties in both countries expressed their attitudes to music of all kinds, and how composers, performers, and audiences cooperated with, resisted, and negotiated these suggestions …

Pay Them Now, Richard C. Crepeau Sep 2013

Pay Them Now, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Apparently it took the actions of a wealthy spoiled rich white kid to get the attention of the mainstream of American media on the issue of paying college athletes. The case of Johnny “Football” stirred the nation when the NCAA in its continuing quest to embarrass itself suspended the Texas A & M quarterback for signing memorabilia. Johnny signed not to make money, but so that those entrepreneurs who make a living from collecting signatures of athletes on sporting paraphernalia could cash their tickets.

Victory, Reconciliation, And Reunion: The Soldiers’ And Sailors’ Monument Of Easton, Pennsylvania And A Memory Of The Civil War, Bryan Toth Sep 2013

Victory, Reconciliation, And Reunion: The Soldiers’ And Sailors’ Monument Of Easton, Pennsylvania And A Memory Of The Civil War, Bryan Toth

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Thirty-five years after the Civil War came to an end the people of Easton, Pennsylvania erected a monument to honor the men of Easton and Northampton County that fought and died in the sectional conflict. With the nation recognizing the sesquicentennial of the Civil War the study of how the people of Easton have chosen to remember this conflict can help us better understand the war itself and its ever changing place in the collective national psychology. The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument that was built in Easton’s Centre Square is reflective of a Northern monument design, and a memory of …

Conflict: Church And State In Spain (1868-1875), Daniel M. Cloward, George R. Ryskamp

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I chose to study the conflict between the Catholic Church and the new Spanish government during its reign of 1868 to 1875. In 1870, the government passed a controversial civil marriage bill, requiring each couple who wished to marry, to marry first by the State’s authority and then if they so wished to marry by the Church.1 If they did not follow this law, their marriage would not be legal and hence all offspring would be illegitimate.2 Also, inheritance laws would not be in effect for the couple nor their children and they would lose any inheritance granted by the …

Summary Of Creative Research Grant On The Subject Of Needlework Samplers Of Early Utah Women, Wendy Butler, Dr. Katharine Daynes

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Receiving the Creative Research Grant for this project has been valuable in not only carrying out extensive research on this topic, but also in opening new ideas and opportunities for my future academic career. I gathered and read numerous books and articles in the broad area of women’s history and in the more narrow topics of immigration, western expansion, and needlework, that are more closely associated with my topic. I was able to take three credit hours of research credit from the History Department which allowed me time for the many hours it took to research and order these books …

Role Of Programmed Proteolysis During Meiosis, Vincent Matthews, G. Valentin Borner Ph.D. Sep 2013

Role Of Programmed Proteolysis During Meiosis, Vincent Matthews, G. Valentin Borner Ph.D.

Undergraduate Research Posters 2013

Meiosis is the process which forms gametes and spores for reproduction in eukaryotic cells. During the pachytene phase of meiosis I, a protein structure, called the Synaptonemal Complex (SC), forms between homologous chromosomes and creates a scaffold for genetic recombination. In yeast, the Zip1 protein is a major structural component of the SC. At restrictive temperature for meiosis, ZIP1 is required for completion of meiotic divisions. At permissive temperature ZIP1 is required for proper chromosome segregation. We observed that chemical inhibition of the proteasome, with MG132, results in arrest at prophase of meiosis I. Based on these results, we questioned …

3d Interpretation Of Architectural History, Davido Hyer, Brad Westwood Sep 2013

3d Interpretation Of Architectural History, Davido Hyer, Brad Westwood

Journal of Undergraduate Research

BYU has a rich architectural history that is in danger of being forgotten with the changing times. I started this project with the intent to help preserve some of this deep history in a digital format that the public would be able to easily understand. Most students and faculty probably don’t know any of the background surrounding the building of the BYU campus. I will present a short history of the Academy building followed by a brief outline of the process I went through in creating this piece.

The History Of Brigham Young University Architecture, Andrew Lorimer, Brad Westwood

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Upon entering Brigham Young University three years ago, I immediately fell in love with the campus. It was so beautiful and well maintained. Many buildings also caught my eye and I greatly desired to learn more about them. Luckily, I became informed of the opportunity to be involved in a project within the Harold B. Lee Library that would highlight the history of BYU’s architecture in a future L. Tom Perry Special Collections exhibit. My involvement with the project consisted of producing and shooting various short documentaries which would combine historical photographs with current video footage in order to give …

Approaches To Learning With Media And Media Literacy Education – Trends And Current Situation In Germany, Gerhard Tulodziecki, Silke Grafe

Journal of Media Literacy Education

German approaches to media literacy education are concerned with the questions, how the variety of media can be used in a meaningful way for learning and teaching and what educational tasks result from the extensive use of media. Considering these questions there are various conceptual ideas, research and development projects as well as implementations into practice in the field of education and teacher training. The development and the current situation of approaches to media literacy education in Germany are described and discussed in the article. Thereby, the focus is on media literacy education in schools.

Tracing The South Africa Immigrant Ancestor: Emigration Records In The United Kingdom And Netherlands, Jacqueline Du Plessis, George Ryskamp Sep 2013

Tracing The South Africa Immigrant Ancestor: Emigration Records In The United Kingdom And Netherlands, Jacqueline Du Plessis, George Ryskamp

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This summer I traveled to the United Kingdom and Europe on a quest: to find emigration records that would assist those researching their South African Immigrant Ancestors to progress in their research. Those familiar with family history and genealogy are aware how difficult research can become once you reach your Immigrant Ancestor. Often this is where research comes to a sudden halt. This is because many emigration records do not list sufficient information with regards to the residence or location of a person. Port and ship lists often only list a country of origin or a port of departure. This …

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

This week I find myself in Boston, one of the couple of American cities which call themselves the cradle of liberty. But I'm not drawn like a moth to the Revolution. It's just not my bean.

Instead, I find myself in the awkward position of standing at a visitor desk and asking a park ranger what will interest a Civil War geek in a Revolutionary-bent city. That dog don't hunt so well. [excerpt]

Pre-Production For A Documentary On The History Of The Lds Church In Italy, Wesley Avery, Dr. Eric Dursteler

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In the late-1980’s, a film was made about a murder among the Amish, and an FBI special agent sent to investigate. The Italian translation to the movie used the term mormoni for the Amish. As a missionary for the LDS Church in Italy, I often encountered those who believed Mormons to be people who do not use electricity, who have large beards, etc.

Dr. Arnold Luschin’S Contribution To Numismatics A Study Of Luschin’S Main Areas Of Contribution, Christoph Luschin, Paul E. Kerry

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of my research was to explore the contributions of Dr. Arnold Luschin to the field of numismatics. The funding made available by ORCA allowed me to engage in real historical research. I traveled to Germany and Austria to complete my research; while there I spent many hours in libraries, archives, and meeting with professionals. Having obtained my research I returned to Provo where I engaged in reading the many source materials. In the write up of my findings I learned much about the historical process. My mentors helped me to approach my analysis and writing in a critical …

“From Millpond To Meo: President Kennedy And Covert Assistance To The Kingdom Of Laos, Russell Stevenson, Dr. Andrew Johns

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The literature on the role of Laos in the historiography on John F. Kennedy’s foreign policy is surprisingly scant. On the day prior to Kennedy’s ascendance to the presidency, Eisenhower called Laos—not Vietnam—“the keystone to Indochina.” Later, Kennedy would bemoan his lack of knowledge on the Vietnam problem due to Eisenhower’s emphasis on this land-locked, obscure country. My research sought to re-establish the center of gravity in the causation of the Vietnam War by culling the documents at John F. Kennedy library to examine why the first six months of the Kennedy administration did not ultimately escalate its commitment to …

“Good And Great”: A Biography Of Harvey Fletcher, Michael Perry, Dr. Brian Cannon Sep 2013

“Good And Great”: A Biography Of Harvey Fletcher, Michael Perry, Dr. Brian Cannon

Journal of Undergraduate Research

During his notable scientific career, which spanned six decades, Harvey Fletcher pioneered research in the development of hearing aids, audiometers, and stereophonic sound. At various times he was president of the American Physical Society, the Acoustical Society of America (which he co-founded), and the American Hearing Society. He also served for many years as Director of Physical Research at Bell Laboratories, one of the leading scientific research centers in the country. Later in life he founded the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences at Brigham Young University and became its first dean. Throughout his illustrious career, Harvey Fletcher remained a …
