Reel Dictatorships: A Comparison Of Cinematic Portrayals Of The Franco And Pinochet Regimes, Patrick J. Thurston, Dr. Dale J. Pratt

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Notwithstanding its emphasis on entertainment, film is a highly political art. All movies, even those intended as entertainment, directly or indirectly transmit messages about politics and society. While the majority of motion pictures reinforce the socio-political status quo, various others powerfully protest perceived political injustice, oppression and despotism. This type of political cinema has played an especially important role as a weapon against dictatorship in Spain and Chile, as during the past twenty-five years, many Spanish and Chilean film makers have used film to depict and denounce the tyrannical rule of Francisco Franco (1936-1975) of Spain and Augusto Pinochet Ugarte …

Ancestra - Part Of The Intersections Project, Hannah Krainz, Katie Huskey, Mary-Francis Miller, Christina Dennis, Holly Holsinger

Undergraduate Research Posters 2013

The vision of The Department of Theatre and Dance’s Intersection Project was to provide points of intersection between artists and community with experiences that all creative artists share, focusing especially on inter-generational exchanges. One element of the Intersections Project was the collaborative creation of an original performance entitled Ancestra. Four student researcher/performers joined twelve Cleveland performance artists, ages 18-73, to create and present the docu-performance, Ancestra. Research for this project focused on the transcript of the 1853 National Women’s Rights Convention held in Cleveland, OH as well as other primary sources from the Women’s Suffrage Movement. The group also examined …

Chinese Life In California During The Gold Rush Era: Better Or Worse Than Life In China?, James Cross, Dr. Jay Buckley

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The relationship between the Caucasian Americans and the Chinese immigrants in California during the gold rush is a topic that has captured the interest of many historians. Of the available literature related to the Chinese, most focus on racial prejudice as a result of labor competition or their similarities to African Americans with references to economic hardships as the push factor that led the Chinese to immigrate to California.

Bringing The Cold War To Life In The High School History Classroom, Aaron Woodrow Andersen, Dr. Andrew Johns Sep 2013

Bringing The Cold War To Life In The High School History Classroom, Aaron Woodrow Andersen, Dr. Andrew Johns

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My project addresses some pressing needs in public school education. There currently seems to be somewhat of a “gloom and doom” attitude about public schools in the United States. The public school system has come under fire in recent years for its perceived failure to adequately educate our children. Alternative proposals such as charter schools and vouchers have been advanced amid a growing perception that public schools are dropping the ball. I have heard many horror stories about unqualified teachers or teachers who, after gaining de facto tenure, proceeded to count down the days to retirement while teaching straight from …

The Volunteer Slaves Indentured Servants In The French Caribbean, Robert D. Taber, Dr. Brett Rushforth Sep 2013

The Volunteer Slaves Indentured Servants In The French Caribbean, Robert D. Taber, Dr. Brett Rushforth

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The last forty years have seen an unprecedented expansion in the study of African slavery and the impact this “peculiar institution” had on the creation of colonies throughout the Americas, Africa, and Asia. In the last twenty years, historians of North America have increasingly examined the development of colonies in the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries as an “Atlantic” phenomenon—that is, as a result of influences from Africa, Europe, and Latin America rather than as a simple outgrowth of the “mother country.” This, in turn, has placed a new emphasis on the role of the Caribbean, where sugar, coffee, and indigo …

Getting Langue Winded: How The European Union Language Policy Came To Be, Clinton Richard Long, Dr. Mark Choate Sep 2013

Getting Langue Winded: How The European Union Language Policy Came To Be, Clinton Richard Long, Dr. Mark Choate

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of my research was to figure out the purpose of the European Union’s (EU) language policy. With twenty-three official languages representing the twenty-seven member-states of the EU comes a great deal of inefficiency. Lots of money is spent on the interpretation and translation and bills take much longer to be voted on because they all have to be translated into every language. With this in mind, I wondered why such a policy exists. I questioned why the union had not chosen one or two languages to use many years ago.

Blood Brothers: Nixon, Bangladesh, And The Rise Of Radical Islam In The Asian Subcontinent, Russell Stevenson, Dr. Andrew Johns Sep 2013

Blood Brothers: Nixon, Bangladesh, And The Rise Of Radical Islam In The Asian Subcontinent, Russell Stevenson, Dr. Andrew Johns

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The research on the Indo-Pakistani war as conducted at the Nixon Presidential Materials project in Baltimore, Maryland yielded excellent fruits for groundbreaking research in the future. Given the relatively recent release of Nixon-era documents to the public, the conclusions to be gleaned from them have the potential to produce groundbreaking scholarship on this “hot spot” in world affairs. As journalists Michael Hirsh and Ron Moreau have argued, “no other country is arguably more dangerous than Pakistan.” However, the danger has long predated the Pakistan’s decision to engage in the Bush administration’s Global War on Terror. My research has focused on …

Alms For The Poor: Giving Them The History They Deserve, Cindy Unwin, Dr. Amy Harris

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I presented my research as a poster in the Mary Lou Fulton Mentored Student Research Conference and won first place in the History category. In my research I focused on answering two questions: 1) What was the demographic of the Lambeth, Surrey workhouse and how does it apply to a case study of my ancestor? 2) What happened to the second generation of workhouse inhabitants.

Rave Reviews The History Of Akron's Tuesday Musical, Thomas Bacher, Cynthia Harrison, Sharon Cebula

University of Akron Press Publications

The Tuesday Musical Club was founded in 1887 by thirteen young Akron women who had an overwhelming desire to share their love of music. With further support of Gertrude Penfield Seiberling, the wife of industrialist Frank Seiberling, the organization grew like many other musical organizations across the country. Unlike similar clubs, the Akron-based entity continued to expand and is one of a very few that have survived. Among the artists who have appeared as a part of the rich history of Akron's Tuesday Musical Organization are Vladimir Horowitz, Artur Rubinstein, Yehudi Menuhin, Yascha Heifetz, Glenn Gould, Van Cliburn, Isaac Stern, …

The African American Experience In Cleveland: Oral History And Digital Exhibition, Bethany Hollowell, Timothy Klypchak, Katherine Taylor, J. Mark Souther

Undergraduate Research Posters 2013

Our project examines themes in African American history from the 1910s to 1970s through the lens of Cleveland, drawing upon the voices of more than 60 Clevelanders interviewed by our team. After collecting more than 60 hours of digital sound using oral history best practices, we produced minute-by-minute logs to aid researchers, created a selection of short story clips for the Cleveland Voices website, and curated new sites for the Cleveland Historical mobile app. Among our interviewees are the oldest living eyewitness of the 1920 Matewan Massacre in the coalfields of West Virginia, the first African American licensed pilot, and …

Discovering The Angry Voices Of The Past: The Striking Legacy Of The Victor Valley Teachers Union, Ashley Bobadilla, Alvaro Bobadilla, Dr. Brian Cannon Sep 2013

Discovering The Angry Voices Of The Past: The Striking Legacy Of The Victor Valley Teachers Union, Ashley Bobadilla, Alvaro Bobadilla, Dr. Brian Cannon

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Victor Valley Teachers’ Union strike was the longest in California history for many years, had very little written about it, and even fewer primary accounts taken from the actual participants. Our research not only focused on discovering what happened, but also why it happened. It juxtaposed different accounts and perspectives to create a rich historical narrative. Angry voices still drift on the breezes through the swirling desert sands in Victorville California, because the teacher’s union strike has not been forgotten and now it will be preserved for generations to come. As James Gregory of the University of Washington recently …
