A Hypochondriac Investigates The Evolution Of Medicine, Natalie S. Sherif

Blogging the Library

This exhibit will open to the public in February 2014, but until then I have my work cut out for me. I am currently researching various aspects of medical history spanning from the mid-1800s, through the Civil War, to WWI. Thus far I have read accounts of women volunteers during the American Civil War, important changes that went into effect during WWI, and an overly detailed description on how to perform tooth extractions according to the latest science of the 1860s. Data is powerful in the right hands. Aggregate data is even more powerful. And Google is data.

One of the odder tools in the Google arsenal is the Ngram viewer a search engine which charts trends within the folds of Google Books' database. Punch in anything. I mean it. Try anything in the Ngram search engine and start falling down the historical trends rabbit hole. [excerpt]

1936 Lithuanian Republic Federal Prison Records, Svetlana Mortensen, Thom Kent Edlund Sep 2013

1936 Lithuanian Republic Federal Prison Records, Svetlana Mortensen, Thom Kent Edlund

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As it was planned I went to Lithuania in November 2005. Few days after my arrival I went to the Lithuanian Central State Archive and met the Archive Assistant Director Valerija Juseviciute with whom I communicated beforehand. Upon this meeting I made a rather unpleasant discovery. In my prior communication with Ms Juseviciute I was assured that I was welcome to come and conduct my research using the records I needed. However, I discovered that the archive was not going to allow any access to the records unless I had a permit from the Personal Data Control Inspection. Of this …

Sound And The Moving Image:Critical Characteristics For Spectator Response, Kara Rader, Rafeeq I. Roberts, Matt Egizii, Jeffery Allen

Undergraduate Research Posters 2013

The prevailing wisdom in the film and video production industries is that audio information outweighs visual information when it comes to spectator responses, but there are few empirical studies to support this claim. In previous research, four critical characteristics of sound have been identified: (1) Music, (2) visual/sound contradictions (defined as sound that is inconsistent with audience expectations based on visual information), (3) multi-channel sound, and (4) sound quality. Building on our previous research into music and film, we have found that many researchers have looked into the question of how music affects emotions (Eschrich et al., 2008; Have, 2008; …

Monuments, Museums, And Mausoleums: Art And The Creation Of Chinese Nationalism, Caroline L. Tung, Dr. Michael Murdock Sep 2013

Monuments, Museums, And Mausoleums: Art And The Creation Of Chinese Nationalism, Caroline L. Tung, Dr. Michael Murdock

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In January 1995 after a national controversy that was sprawled upon the pages of USA Today and the Washington Post, the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum reluctantly announced the abandonment of its Enola Gay exhibition. The cause of this cancellation was the divisive exhibit script that had questioned the necessity to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima—a perspective that satisfied historians but that alarmed veterans and conservatives. A fervent culture war quickly embroiled America, splitting the nation into those who supported the curators’ vision of an exhibition that reflected current historical scholarship against those who supported the veterans’ view …

Audio Restoration Of Edison Diamond Discs And Historical L.D.S. Church Recordings, Daniel R. Thompson, David Day Sep 2013

Audio Restoration Of Edison Diamond Discs And Historical L.D.S. Church Recordings, Daniel R. Thompson, David Day

Journal of Undergraduate Research

EDISON DIAMOND DISC RE-CREATIONS Thomas Edison, inventor of the phonograph, made a vast collection of recordings from around the world. He reissued many on what is known as clay records or “Edison Diamond Disc Re-Creations.” Brigham Young University owns a substantial collection of these recordings. Unfortunately, because of their fragile format they are currently not easily available to the general public. With support from BYU’s ORCA Mentoring Grant I was able to research and restore a selection of Edison Diamond Disc Re-Creations and make them available to the public through the Harold B. Lee Library. Fortunately, through the generosity of …

Migration, Resistance, And Counter-Hegemony: Mormonism’S Final Attempt At Securing The Kingdom, Scott Killian Thomas, Dr. Grant R. Underwood Sep 2013

Migration, Resistance, And Counter-Hegemony: Mormonism’S Final Attempt At Securing The Kingdom, Scott Killian Thomas, Dr. Grant R. Underwood

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Students of America’s western history are familiar with the region’s most dominant ethnic group, the Mormons, which migrated in mass during the middle of the nineteenth-century from Illinois due to external pressures. This migration to the West has received much attention both academically and institutionally and is a well-known historical event. After a handful of turbulent decades in the Great Basin region a much more complex, arduous, and strategic exodus to Mexico occurred in 1885 which has not been as well documented (in published or unpublished sources) as the previous one. Unlike the move to the Great Basin (where the …

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

Sometimes you stumble on something on eBay you just can't pass up. It's that $6 buy that is awkward, odd and just a little out of your scope. But it's only $6. If you'd buy a burger for $6, you shouldn't pass up an original letter from 1835.

Every letter has a story. And each of those stories has its own drama, its own meaning, its own power. The mundanities of human life can be just as powerful as the battles and charges. [excerpt]
