Peter Lassen: Danish Pioneer Of California, Franklin D. Scott
Peter Lassen: Danish Pioneer Of California, Franklin D. Scott
The Bridge
"The Dane Peter Lassen," or " Peter Lassen, a Danish Blacksmith," appears in almost every memoir dealing with early northern California. His Danishness was obvious, though no one bothers to explain why. Was his speech the telltale feature? The man was almost thirty years of age when he left Denmark, and he had had no opportunity to learn English while his tongue was ductile. He came to California in the spring of 1840, at the beginning of a decade of decision. At that moment Indians inhabited the land, Russians were still established on the California coast, Mexicans held title to …
Danish Farmers In The Middle West, Erik Helmer Pedersen
Danish Farmers In The Middle West, Erik Helmer Pedersen
The Bridge
A former Danish carpenter and farmer, Niels Madsen, his wife, Anna, and their six children, aged 15 to 3 years, were among the passengers on board the America wooden paddle-steamer "Northern Light" when the ship on May 1, 1869, left Copenhagen. It was bound for New York, but enroute it had to call at Gothenburg in Sweden and Christiana in Norway. The Madsen family had left their native village of Klippinge at Stevns, in the company of about 30 other emigrants, headed by a so-called "yankee," Mr. A. Clausen, who during the spring of 1869 had formed an emigration group. …

The Bridge
Since I have been working with the Danish Immigrant Archives, and especially with the Danish Immigrant Archival Listing project, it has become increasingly clear to me that those immigrants who become a part of the Danish Church represent but a small fraction of the Danes who came to this country. Sometime in the Danish Church we have, I fear, been so wrapped up in ourselves that we have lost sight of the great majority of Danes who emigrated to America and who, in one way or another have left their mark. Examples are numerous but I think of one little …
The Emigration Of Soren Kierkegaard, Howard V. Hong, Edna H. Hong
The Emigration Of Soren Kierkegaard, Howard V. Hong, Edna H. Hong
The Bridge
John and Jane Doe, USA, are pretty well aware that Denmark exports the best butter, bacon, and cheese in the world to the world. But perhaps not even Jens and Tina Jensen, second and third generation Danish-Americans, realize the extent to which the second-to-none thoughts of a nineteenth century Dane have emigrated and are emigrating to the whole wide world . Indeed, they are valued more by the world than by Danes in Denmark, who can hardly conceal their surprise that the world now pays more attention to Soren Aabye Kierkegaard (1813-1865) than to Hans Christian Andersen . The Danes …

The Bridge
"I am as water," Hans Christian Andersen wrote in a letter of 1855. "Everything moves me. Everything is reflected in me. I suppose it is part of my writer's nature, and often I have had pleasure and blessing from it, but it is often also a torment."
A Sampler, Carl Hansen
A Sampler, Carl Hansen
The Bridge
Note: Seventy years after his death the Danish-born writer Carl Hansen (1860-1916) remains, among those who read Danish, a highly valued interpreter of the immigrant experience in the United States. Hansen was the subject of two articles in earlier issue (Vol. 2:1, 1979) of The Bridge. His short stories and one novel are together a landmark in the American literature written in Danish , but the books have become inaccessible to many and, as to language, closed to a large audience who would appreciate his ability to sketch Danish-American personalities and lives. In Tyler, Minnesota, where he lived until 1910, …

Emancipation & Renewal: English Catholicism In The Nineteenth Century, Cheryl E. Yielding
Emancipation & Renewal: English Catholicism In The Nineteenth Century, Cheryl E. Yielding
History Theses & Dissertations
English Catholics faced great difficulties and divisions in the nineteenth century. The chief problems were obtaining civil rights and the right to provide their children with a religious education, prejudice, the restoration of the hierarchy for more efficient government, and the split between Ultramontanes and Liberals. The influx of Irish added to these problems.
This thesis is concerned only with the English Catholics and those Irish Catholics living in England. The "Irish Question" is not dealt with, as the Irish Catholics had different problems and needs than their English brethren. The major emphasis is the prejudice encountered by English Catholics …

Germany, Mexico, And The United States, 1911-1917, John Joseph Leffler
Dissertations and Theses
The thesis focuses on Germany's Mexican policies from 1911 to 1917, with particular attention given to the connection of these policies to political relations between the United States and Germany and between the United States and Mexico. The paper also attempts to place German activities in Mexico within the context of Germany's desire to promote its political and economic interests on a worldwide scale. Although some unpublished sources were consulted, the account relies mostly on published documents, memoirs, and secondary sources for its factual basis.
Anna Held: A Biography, Michael Owen Hoffman
Anna Held: A Biography, Michael Owen Hoffman
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis, a biography of the French actress, Anna Held (1873-1918), is an attempt to place her in proper perspective in American history. Essentially a record of Miss Held from birth to death, it highlights many events that made her famous. Included are examples of publicity generated by her manager-husband, Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr.
Much credit can be awarded Ziegfeld for his expertise in publicity stunts and promotion. Undue praise, however, has been attributed to him for the origin of the Ziegfeld Follies and the success of Anna Held.
Anna was a Continental success long before she met him. His promotion …

Fin-De-Siecle Vienna: Politics And Culture – Book Review, Harry Ritter
History Faculty and Staff Publications
For the past two decades, Carl Schorske has been one of the most interesting writers in the field of late nineteenth-century Austrian history. The appearance of this handsomely illustrated collection of his essays - most of which originally appeared in historical journals - provides an opportunity to reflect on the nature of his contribution. The book consists of seven studies on topics ranging from the Ringstrafienstil in urban planning to Kokoschka's expressionism and Schoenberg's musical explorations. The finest, entitled "Politics in a New Key," is an examination of the irrational "sharper key" in political rhetoric and deportment which arose in …

The term Holocaust comes from the Hebrew word olah, meaning burnt sacrifice. In the Greek translation of the Old Testament, this word became holokauston. Today, the word Holocaust is used to denote the Nazi persecution of the Jews, resulting in the extermination of some six million men, women, and children in concentration and extermination camps. The term should bring to mind horrible images of torture, death, and destruction. Yet, in most cases, this does not happen. Although many people are familiar with The Diary of Anne Frank, The Hiding Place, and The Holocaust, even in today's highly educated society, …

Games And Gaming Of The Stuart Aristocracy, Vicky Ann Sanderlin
History Theses & Dissertations
Games and gaming provide insight into the lives of the people of the past. This thesis analyzes the games and gaming patterns of the aristocracy of Stuart England. This examination of gaming concentrates on the place of leisure games in the world of the elite. The study focuses on games suitable for inclement weather and includes both children's and adult's games from the period.
This thesis addresses three basic questions: 1) who were the gamesters, 2) when and where did they game, and 3) what games did they play and how did they play them? Answers to these questions have …

The Bridge
By the time Sophus F. Neble, a journeyman printer from Stubbekobing, Denmark, emigrated in 1883 to seek his fortune in the farmlands of the American Midwest, there was already a rudimentary Danish press tradition in the United States. But at that point in his life, Neble little cared or even knew much about it. He had thrown over his years of apprenticeship in the printing trade for a dream of becoming a successful American dairy farmer in order to win the hand of the young woman he loved.
Rasmus Sorensen And Danish Emigration, 1847-1863, Frederick Hale
Rasmus Sorensen And Danish Emigration, 1847-1863, Frederick Hale
The Bridge
Probably no individual played a more seminal role in the limited Danish emigration to North America before and during the Civil War than Rasmus Sorensen. From the late 1840s until the early 1860s this author, educator, politician, and social reformer led three groups of his countrymen to Wisconsin and, through numerous booklets, speeches, and letters encouraged others to settle elsewhere in the United States and Canada. Yet Sorensen has generally been little more than a supernumerary in the historiography of this transatlantic migration. Its pioneering historian, Peter Sorensen Vig, devoted twelve pages to him in his mammoth compendium, a dozen …

Art? Among Danes In America?, Aase Bak
The Bridge
The Danish American Heritage Society has as one of its objectives to "encourage Danish American expression in the arts, humanities, and social sciences." It is to be hoped that the Danish American Heritage Society will have more luck in its endeavors to promote the arts than did another organization with somewhat similar aims. I refer here to Dansk Folkesamfund (Danish People's Society) and the abortive attempt to launch an art committee under its auspices in 1897.

The Partridge, Martin A. Hansen, Inga Wiehl, Translator
The Bridge
"Martin A. Hansen is considered one of the best and most influential Danish writers of the century. Despite his premature death in 1955 at the age of forty-six, he left a rich artistic legacy of novels, short stories, and travel descriptions as well as essays and books dealing with historical, cultural and philosophical themes.
'The Partridge' ('Agerhonen') is the title story of a collection of twelve short stories, all of which emphasize artistic expression as self-revelation. It is the means whereby the artist transforms the world and makes it new. The twelve stories are divided into three parts, childhood, adolescence …
