A Conquering Race: The Birth Of Social Darwinism In Pre-War Germany, Andrew T. Murphree Apr 2015

A Conquering Race: The Birth Of Social Darwinism In Pre-War Germany, Andrew T. Murphree

Andrew T Murphree

Popular opinion suggests that certain political and military leaders throughout history are the primary agents for change in civilization; however, such a conclusion represents a serious oversight regarding the powerful potential of emerging worldviews to dictate epochal moments throughout mankind. Certainly, dynamic figures rise to prominence to lead movements of conservatism, progression, and moderation, but the conduit of ideas serves as the essential catalytic force that ignites and sustains these patterns. The Great War of the twentieth century was a complex global conflict of immense proportions, unlike anything the world had ever known. Historians perhaps express the greatest perplexity in …

John Hatsell served as Assistant Clerk to the House of Commons (later Clerk) and his four-volume Precedents of Proceedings has achieved a well-deserved iconic status among students of parliamentary practice. Our Constitutional Logic has extracted 58,277 words from Vol. 2, 2nd ed., 1785 for comparison with four principal American texts consisting of procedural rules in legislative assemblies and the federal convention. All five texts now appear in Five Basic Texts in the Founding of Parliamentary Science Originating from the United Kingdom and United States (in MR Text Format), 2 OCL 136_5; in turn, OCL is producing the first concordance of …

Funding An Escape: The Purchase Of Karl Wolfskehls Library By Salman Schocken And His Help For Franzisca Baruch, Tomke Hinrichs

Tomke Hinrichs

Salman Schocken (1877–1959) was the owner of a multicorparate enterprise and a “businessman with art in his soul” as Felix Rosenblüth (1887–1978) said. His manner to handle money and his success in different fields of publishing and collecting rare books made it possible, that he could help other people in times of need. This article deals with two specific cases of funding an escape and helping to save people’s life during the growing power of the National Socialists in 1930s. Globalization's Shift In Accountability: Textile Suppliers And Merchants In 18th And 21st Century Bangladesh, Margaret Jennings

jenningsmargaret@icloud.com

The British East India Company in the 18th century and Wal-Mart in the 21st century share synonymous business practices: the exchange between a less developed nation's unlimited labor force and a developed country's insatiable appetite for cheap garments. By contrasting two events of corruption charges, the Warren Hastings' Trial of the Century and the Tazreen Factory Fire of 2012 illustrate how the accountability of the exchange between the merchant and the suppliers has shifted.

Ancestors Of Frank Cortez Flores - A Detailed Report, Frank Cortez Flores

Frank Cortez Flores

I’m in the process of completing the final draft on my biography book, “AN ACCOUNT OF MY LIFE’S BLESSINGS And MY SPANISH ANCESTORS - Among the First Families of New Mexico” that will go out for further editing and for additional information and commentaries to be inserted. I’m still trying to organize an area in the book for additional documents/photos that I still have to scan and upload onto the hard drive/CD for the final print. This has been more of an effort, or so it seems, than researching and writing my PhD dissertation, or at least I’ve put in …

The Effects Of Mass Consumption On American Society, Jon Foster May 2012

The Effects Of Mass Consumption On American Society, Jon Foster

Jon Foster

For a generation that doesn’t relate to the ‘eighties’, fondly remembers the ‘nineties’, and came of age in the two thousands, we often think of the sixties with a bit of nostalgia; reminiscing about Woodstock, and hippies, the nuclear family or maybe the Beatles. Unfortunately, much of this understanding is isolated within a bubble; wherein the sincere socioeconomic issues of the time, often become detached from their idealistic counterpart. To clarify, the causal relations that gave rise to what my generation remembers and typifies as the ‘sixties’, becomes distorted within the context of the rapidly changing times.

Europeana 1914-1918 Collection Days, Mikkel Christoffersen Jan 2012

Europeana 1914-1918 Collection Days, Mikkel Christoffersen

Janie Tremblay

To commemorate the centenary of World War I, Europeana has initiated a couple of projects under the header of Europeana 1914-1918. One of these is Collection Days. Modelled on the British antique road shows, at a Collection Day, people turn up with their 1914-1918 memorabilia and have them digitized and catalogued on the spot. They also get to tell their family story, which is the main thing. In this project, the object supports the story rather than vice-versa. In the spring of 2012, a Collection Day was held at Sonderborg Castle in Denmark. It is a democratisation of Denmark's cultural …

More than 400,000 items will be digitized and offered online as part of this initiative, while personal material submitted from the public will be digitized and added to another Europeana online archive called Europeana 1914-1918. In other news, the European Library …

Tripartism In Ireland, Jon Foster Dec 2011

Tripartism In Ireland, Jon Foster

Jon Foster

Over the past few years, the term “PIIGS” has become synonymous with economic concerns and fears of collapse. The acronym, which currently refers to the European countries of Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece, and Spain: was originally just ‘PIGS’ , used to group the similar economies of Southern Europe when considering them for acceptance into the European Monetary Union. Nevertheless, as a result of the global financial crisis, this term soon came to identify economically weak and overly indebted nations. However, unlike Italy, Greece, and Portugal, who had before the crisis demonstrated relatively slow growth, modest unemployment, and a propensity to …

Tactics, Politics, And Propaganda In The Irish War Of Independence, 1917-1921, Mike Rast

M. C. Rast

This thesis examines the influences on and evolution of the Irish Republican Army’s guerrilla war strategy between 1917 and 1921. Utilizing newspapers, government documents, and memoirs of participants, this study highlights the role of propaganda and political concerns in waging an insurgency. It argues that while tactical innovation took place in the field, IRA General Headquarters imposed policy and directed the conflict with a concern for the political results of military action. While implementing strategies necessary to effective conduct of the war, this Headquarters staff was unable to reconcile a disjointed and overburdened command structure, leading its disintegration after the …
