Dreyfus: How He Was Framed, Donald E. Wilkes Jr.
Dreyfus: How He Was Framed, Donald E. Wilkes Jr.
Popular Media
When, 12 tumultuous years after it began, the Dreyfus case officially came to an end, one journalist was inspired with awe: "Historical records, criminal annals, romance and the drama, furnish no stranger tale of human life and destiny, than that which has reached its culmination in the final and complete exoneration of Dreyfus."

Book Review: The Correspondence Of Heinrich Melchior Muhlenberg, Volume I, 1740-1747., Don Heinrich Tolzmann
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Representing· the first volume of the English translation of the correspondence of the Patriarch of American Lutheranism, this work contains 69 items to and from HMM in the time period of 17 40-4 7. Although accessible in a recent German edition (Die Korrespondenz. Heinrich Melchior Mühlenbergs: Aus der Anfangszeit des deutschen Luthertums in Nordamerika. Berlin: Walter de Gruyter, 1986- ), this work is nonetheless a significant contribution to our understanding of the German-speaking element of the 18th century, which will be extraordinarily useful to the general reader as well as to scholars.

Book Review: A Very Civil War: The Swiss Sonderbund War Of 1842., Sabine Jessner
Swiss American Historical Society Review
The Sonderbund war of 1847 was, as the author convincingly demonstrates, "a very civil war." Unlike the later North American sectional conflict, Switzerland's regional strife lasted but twenty-five days and cost fewer than a hundred lives. Yet these statistics belie the rancor that divided the opposing parties, the more than 150,000 men under arms on both sides, and the very imminent danger of international involvement.

Benjamin Franklin And Heinrich Zschokke, Donald H. Crosby
Benjamin Franklin And Heinrich Zschokke, Donald H. Crosby
Swiss American Historical Society Review
History has not seen fit to couple the names of Benjamin Franklin and Heinrich Zschokke. To attempt to do so at this 1ate date, then, may well suggest dilettantism or even charlatanry. What can be said in defense of what might seem to be a whimsical coupling, one which flies in the face of time-tested historical judgment? To proceed logically: one begins, as an American, with a study of colonial history before, during, and after the Revolution, where one very quickly encounters the towering figure of Benjamin Franklin. Then, as a student of Swiss history and culture, one turns to …
A Swiss Phenomenon: Bauernmalerei (Peasant Painting), Walter Angst
A Swiss Phenomenon: Bauernmalerei (Peasant Painting), Walter Angst
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Ever since, some 50,000 years ago, the paleolithic Cro-Magnon aborigine of Altamira (a large cave near Santander in Northern Spain) painted magnificent pictures of wild animals on their cave walls, people of all kinds from many lands have used colorants to embellish the interiors of dwellings. The use of pigments mixed with various binders for decorating peoples' surroundings as an expression of the human desire for beauty has fluctuated throughout the centuries, but has never totally abated.

Swiss-American Relations: A Challenge, Lukas F. Burckhardt
Swiss-American Relations: A Challenge, Lukas F. Burckhardt
Swiss American Historical Society Review
With her lively reminiscences of our years in the service of the Swiss Embassy in Washington, D.C., my wife Agathe has evoked a fine period in our life in which we were both equally engaged, greatly encouraged by our chiefs, in fostering Swiss-American relations on a very personal level. This endeavor was made easy by a favorable intellectual climate. Things· American still had an unique charm for our curious Swiss visitors who found there an astonishing openmindedness. We met in the United States many highly motivated Americans in responsible positions who were keen to keep in close touch with our …
Swiss-Americans In The 1990 Census, Terry Johnson
Swiss-Americans In The 1990 Census, Terry Johnson
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Over one million Americans claim Swiss ancestry according to the 1990 ethnic data recently released by the U.S. Census. While this is up 6.5% over the 1980 figure, the Swiss remain a very small ethnic group, accounting for less than half a percent of total U.S. population. Nevertheless, the new data makes the 1990 census the first in which the Swiss pass the million population mark.

A New Job- A New World Washington: 1958-1970, Agathe Burckhardt-Sandreuter
Swiss American Historical Society Review
When on June 28th, 1957, my husband was appointed to the post of Labor Attache in Washington he was informed that he would have to be there on August 1st in order to attend the National Day celebrations with the Swiss colony. We agreed that I would join him later since I had to wind up my teaching obligations at the "Mädchengymnasium Basel," find temporary homes for our three daughters and last, but not least, learn how to drive a car. At that time I also got acquainted with "Protocol" which summoned me to pay my first formal call on …

The Literature Of The Romandie: Switzerland's Wild West, Barbara Villiger
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Geneva's best-known writer lives in France. French Switzerland's best known woman writer lives in Neuchatel, but she is Hungarian. And to close the triangle - Switzerland's most successful writer in Paris last year is by no means a French Swiss but a German-speaking Parisian of choice. As regards the first author, the Genevan writer living in France, I'm talking about Robert Pinget; as regards the second author, the Hungarian living in Neuch~el, about Agota Kristof; and in the third instance, the Parisian by choice, about Paul Nizon. Before focusing on the two writers of today's talk--Pinget and Kristof--I'd like to …
A Swiss Family's Homecoming After Three Hundred Years, Frederick W. Vogler
A Swiss Family's Homecoming After Three Hundred Years, Frederick W. Vogler
Swiss American Historical Society Review
In an earlier publication on my own family's European roots, I had occasion to write-~rather wistfully, it now seems--of how our modem family's ancestors had apparently renounced all ties with those they left behind in Switzerland and Germany, never looking back once they had chosen to emigrate to North America in 1742 and had then succeeded in establishing themselves initially in New England and North Carolina, then across the continent as far as Ontario and California. The completeness of this break with the past was all the more remarkable in that no evidence whatever has ever been found of any …
From Italy To Boston's North End: Italian Immigration And Settlement, 1890-1910, Stephen Puleo
From Italy To Boston's North End: Italian Immigration And Settlement, 1890-1910, Stephen Puleo
Graduate Masters Theses
More than four million Italian immigrants entered the United States between 1880 and 1920, a number greater than any other ethnic group during America's peak immigration years. From 1900 to 1910 alone, more than two million Italians flowed through American ports. This thesis examines the great Italian migration to and settlement in the United States, focusing on one of America's strongest and most vibrant ethnic communities, Boston’s Italian North End.
The vast majority of Italian immigrants were peasants from agrarian Southern Italy, seeking refuge in America from nearly unbearable conditions in their homeland. They were mostly young, usually poor and …
Women Writers In Revolution: Feminism In Germaine De Staël And Ding Ling, Sara Powell
Women Writers In Revolution: Feminism In Germaine De Staël And Ding Ling, Sara Powell
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In this essay, the concern is feminism in the writings of the two revolutionary women, Germaine de Stael, who lived and wrote during the French revolutionary era, and Ding Ling, who lived and wrote during the Chinese Communist revolutionary era. The main theme of the essay is to determine whether the feminism in their work is of a similar nature despite the vast differences in the times and places in which they each lived. Concomitantly, the theme is also an attempt to discover through such similarities if feminism is of a universal nature. Through biographical sketches and analysis of selected …

The Atlantic Conference At Argentia (9-12 August 1941) The Anglo-American Agreement On The Defeat Of Nazi Germany, John Michael Sweeney
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
The meeting at Argentina, Newfoundland, between Prime Minister Winston Churchill and President Franklin D. Roosevelt in August 1941 was the first "summit" conference of the Second World War. It set the stage for the United States' entry into the war on the side of Great Britain and produced the Atlantic Charter, the noble statement of Western war aims. This study describes how the Nazi threat to England and the Atlantic brought the two democracies together into a de facto alliance before the United States formally entered the war. Its central theme is the "strategy of provocation" whereby President Roosevelt, certain …
