The Sexual Morphology Of The Ice Cream Cone: Its Structural Development And Transformation, Eddie Fook Hong Wong

Art & Art History ETDs

This exposition will be concerned with three major aspects of the thesis paintings: (1) the establishment of the historical context, (2) an analysis of the work of the painters that have influenced the conception of the work, (3) an explanation of the thematic imagery. Toward this end I will cover: first, what I hold to be the historical process underlying the development of modern painting; second, the work of those specific artists whose development reflects the above historical process; and third, the particular works of the aforementioned artists who have had a direct bearing on the paintings of the thesis; …

New Meaning In Old Forms, John Lawrence Ward Jun 1966

New Meaning In Old Forms, John Lawrence Ward

Art & Art History ETDs

This paper has three objectives; first, it is a research project in which pictures which appear significant to me are analyzed to account for their power; second, it is designed to assist the reader in understanding the problems and concerns which I face as a painter and the reasons for my admiration of those pictures discussed in this paper; and third, in keeping with Eliot’s view that new works of art change the value and meaning of previous art, I hope to provide some insight into these past works as seen through my paintings and the recent art which has …

Developing Visual Creative Traits Through A Three Week Course Of Instruction And The Relationship Of Spontaneous And Deliberate Art Expression To Creative Achievement, Walter E. Rutkowski Sep 1965

Developing Visual Creative Traits Through A Three Week Course Of Instruction And The Relationship Of Spontaneous And Deliberate Art Expression To Creative Achievement, Walter E. Rutkowski

Art & Art History ETDs

The development of creativity is of major interest to art education as well as education in general. It is assumed by art educators, that creativity can and should be derived through art. However, in art the development of creativity is at a very elementary stage of understanding that incorporates unproven feelings and assumptions into philosophies and aims.

A Study For A Text In Spanish On Art Education For Elementary Classroom Teachers In Latin America, Amber Y. Wolcott May 1965

A Study For A Text In Spanish On Art Education For Elementary Classroom Teachers In Latin America, Amber Y. Wolcott

Art & Art History ETDs

Education is at a rather high level of sophistication and advancement in most areas of North America, Europe, and parts of Asia. Unless information has been gained through travel, research and study, or personal contact with foreign students and visitors, it is difficult to realize there are places, such as most of Latin America, where children are deprived of good educational resources, schools sufficiently equipped with texts, materials, and well-trained teachers. Because of this, they are afforded little chance to fully develop an awareness of their surroundings. Usually, such an education is achieved under all possible conditions of study, exploration, …

"The Craftsman Has A High And Extraordinary Mission: To Imbue The Useful Object With The Spirit Of Art.", Donald Knight Spaulding

Art & Art History ETDs

It is a truism in industrial design that the simplest machine which performs the function is the best. This is functionalism in the strictest sense and, within limitations, it can be applied to crafts design. Design contains a logic, however personal, and a sense of order. These aspects are achieved in execution partly through repetition and variation (or extensions of repetition and variation such as contrast, symmetry, balance, etc.) and partly through the materials used; together they work for unity. Elements which are distracting or irrational tend to confuse and detract from the feeling of unity. The obvious analogy is …

John Philoponus' Commentary On Aristotle's Theory Of The World, Christos Kaplanides Jan 1965

John Philoponus' Commentary On Aristotle's Theory Of The World, Christos Kaplanides

Art & Art History ETDs

The contributions of the Greeks to the development and evolution science are enormous. Not only were the Greeks the originators of the basic philosophical and scientific: modes of reflection in the western world, but they were also the continuators as well as the best commentators and critics of their ancestors and their contemporaries. To restrict the contributions of the Greeks to science to the pre-Roman period would be wrong. It would be equally as -wrong to restrict the presense of original thinkers to that period also.

Early Shipbuilding In Colonial New Spain, 1519-1565, William Collins Jun 1964

Early Shipbuilding In Colonial New Spain, 1519-1565, William Collins

Art & Art History ETDs

This thesis presents a general study of early shipbuilding in New Spain, with special emphasis on the period, 1519 to 1565. It is intended to be preliminary to a dissertation on a phase of the same general subject. This paper is presented for the historian, and is not intended to be a technical study of shipbuilding. The story of shipbuilding in New Spain is closely related to the story of exploration of the New World and the conquest of New Spain. I have tried to cover the narrative of exploration and conquest only insofar as it relates to shipbuilding and …

The Road To Destruction: Solitude And Decadence In CrôNica Da Casa Assassinada By Lúcio Cardoso, Sharon Wyatt Jun 1964

The Road To Destruction: Solitude And Decadence In CrôNica Da Casa Assassinada By Lúcio Cardoso, Sharon Wyatt

Art & Art History ETDs

Lúcio Cardoso's work may be considered as personifying the problem of human solitude in all its physical, moral, and spiritual aspects. Mankind is a wretched lot forever condemned to an oppressive solitude by a merciless God. He developed this theme first through the omniscient third person as in A Luz no Sub-solo and Dias Perdidos, then turned to the stream of consciousness technique as recorded in the mind as in O anfiteatro, or in a confession as in Inácio, and finally perfected it in his masterpiece, Crônica da Casa Assasainada. I have chosen to analyze this last book since it …

The opportunity for self-expression gained through art experience contribute to the total development of the individual. As indicated by Rees:

...it is evident that creative self-expression in some form of art activity is the key to the greatest possible degree of self-realization, self-discovery, and self-identification, for it is the unique and special means by which a person may express his whole self--his whole personality.

A Study Of Faculty In-Service Education Programs In The Public Schools Of New Mexico, Helen P. Anderson May 1956

A Study Of Faculty In-Service Education Programs In The Public Schools Of New Mexico, Helen P. Anderson

Art & Art History ETDs

Teacher education should be a continuous process if the teacher is to achieve full realization of his capabilities. Pre-service education is exceedingly important for achieving this, but it cannot provide complete and adequate preparation. It alone cannot produce full realization of the potentialities of the prospective teacher. Upon entrance into the profession, the beginning teacher, regardless of his adequacy of preparation, is faced with a new environment in which he must use new and relatively unfamiliar materials and tools. Rapid changes in educational procedures soon make the pre-service education of both the beginning teacher and the experienced teacher outmoded. The …

The Evolution Of Portraiture In The Italian Renaissance, Edward Martin Gnall Apr 1954

The Evolution Of Portraiture In The Italian Renaissance, Edward Martin Gnall

Art & Art History ETDs

The method of procedure employed in this study was to gather scattered material relating to the subject from art histories, artist, biographies, personal notes recorded while pursuing standard university courses on the history of art, art periodicals, and art bulletins, and attempt to condense the acquired material into a lucid organization of facts, places, personalities, and works. Photographic reproductions in black and white were made of portrait works by various major artists in the Italian Renaissance and compared sequentially to establish a possible relationship of developing styles. Those which seemed to epitomize the most significant advances were chosen for the …

A Survey Of Southwestern Indian Stone, Shell, And Bone Sculpture, Diane Lee Aller Jan 1954

A Survey Of Southwestern Indian Stone, Shell, And Bone Sculpture, Diane Lee Aller

Art & Art History ETDs

The interest of the modern artist and craftsman in primitive art has increased yearly since the official discovery of this variety of art in the early years of the twentieth century. To meet the demand for information that this interest has aroused, large numbers of books and articles, many illustrating handsome examples of primitive work, have been compiled. These works, though often valuable and exciting, usually fail to give anything approaching a complete examination of one subject. An art student of a particular subject must turn to the works of the anthropologist, rather than to the works of the art …

The Role Of Art In The Complete Development Of A Christian Personality, Sister Loretta Ann Mccarthy Jun 1952

The Role Of Art In The Complete Development Of A Christian Personality, Sister Loretta Ann Mccarthy

Art & Art History ETDs

A survey of ancient literature reveals that art as an area in school life is becoming increasingly recognized as tremendously significant to a complete participation in the creative activities of life. A critical point has been reached in so far as art has begun to be recognized as an integral part of the school program rather than an educational frill offered for those students who have difficulty with the academic program or as a concession to the few talented students.

It is the purpose of this study (1) to outline briefly the theory of art education as applied to the …

A Historical Study Of The Armory Show Of 1913 As A Factor In The Development Of American Art, Jurdan G. Myers

Art & Art History ETDs

For many years lecturers and art historians have been aware of the importance of the Armory Show (The international Exhibition of Modern Art) held in New York in 1913. This awareness has not been sufficient to stimulate the presentation of the entire history of the Armory show. Although most lecturers and art historians dismiss the exhibit by saying that it was important, there are a few who have given as much as ten pages to a discussion of the show.

Nationalism: A Search For Unity, The Role Of The Mexican Government In Sponsoring Contemporary Fine Arts, Katharine Ferris Nutt May 1951

Nationalism: A Search For Unity, The Role Of The Mexican Government In Sponsoring Contemporary Fine Arts, Katharine Ferris Nutt

History ETDs

The following discussion is in part the history of nationalism in the fine arts of Mexico, as a spontaneous expression and as one artificially stimulated. Of equal concern, however, are the State's endeavors to channel nationalism by controlling the bellas artes through subsidy, decree, and law, and finally by the creation of a national institute or theater. The writer has endeavored to reveal both the advantageous and disadvantageous aspects of the government's control and to render some idea as to the extent to which cultural nationalism may forge permanent unity among the Mexicans.

Because of this, the thesis has attained a far greater aspect of reality than it would have received had the author confined himself solely to a theoretical study of mural painting.
