Since the early eighteenth century the Don Juan legend was a popular subject in Austrian theatres on All Souls' Day (November 2); a peculiar custom, given that the main character is a libertine who indulges in excesses without any fear of divine retribution. One such work was Anton Cremeri's Der steinerne Gast (The Stone Guest) published in 1787; coincidentally Mozart's Don Giovanni premiered in the same year.

Un punto de entrada al mismo nos remite a los conceptos de acción/inacción, desde donde la intriga toma cuerpo y comienza a formarse. This poster looks at the circulation rate for literary primary texts, which constitute a unique area of collecting in academic libraries: while they do not in most cases meet immediate research needs, it is assumed that libraries ought to acquire them, for reasons including future research needs, preservation of the cultural record, and the ability of members of the intellectual community to stay current, those these remain primarily tacit. My work explores the capacity of cultural producers to perform “insurgent citizenship,” a term theorized by James Holsten (2008) to describe how the peripheries of social organization can propel alternative modes of civic participation, through music. I utilize Engin Isin’s performative dimension of citizenship (2017) to investigate such forms of insurgent citizenship as they evolve in social and cultural peripheries of the contemporary arts and culture industry in the city of Dresden, Germany to identify the pathways they open to socio-political participation and autonomy for refugees.

As parallels have been drawn between Voldemort’s Death Eaters and Nazis, it is time to examine the relationship between Gellert Grindelwald and real-life fascists. Through such a comparison, we can see common rhetoric in both real and fictional fascism.

In Lost Memory of Skin (2011), his twelfth novel, Russell Banks continues his exploration of the dark underbelly of American society—in this instance, the moral wilderness of a group of convicted sex offenders exiled to living beneath a concrete causeway in the south Florida city of Calusa, a fictionalized Miami. Banks, who has long been “our premier chronicler of the doomed and forgotten American male” (Schulman 8), focuses in Lost on a twenty-two-year-old parolee referred to throughout only as “The Kid.” While guilty and duly convicted of propositioning an underage girl online for sex, The Kid is still presented in …

The rise of the graphic novel as a new genre of the arts has prompted many questions surrounding it – about its nature, relationship to other genres, effect on audiences, etc. In our research, we specifically examined graphic novel adaptations of classic German works that are part of the “canon” of German literature. We first read the original work and then the graphic novel adaptation. Our aim was to determine how faithful the adaptation was to the original using four criteria: style (character perspective/representation), use of original text, plot additions or subtractions, and use of color. in each of the …

In 1962, as Cold War tensions approached their peak, Friedrich Dürrenmatt, a Swiss playwright, published his play The Physicists. Two of the most important topics in The Physicists are mental illness and ethical responsibility of scientists. Dürrenmatt’s three main characters: Möbius (a genius), Einstein (a Russian spy), and Newton (an American spy) are all physicists who appropriate the status of mentally ill in order to hide from society inside the Les Cerisiers Sanatorium. Their status as mentally ill acts as a cover up that reveals their different reasons for adapting that status–from Möbius attempt to escape the politics of …

In this study we sought to analyze the inclusion of themes from Martin Luther's 95 Theses (1517) in his later writings and the possible development of such themes. We sought to analyze selected works by Luther in order to answer the following question: Of the themes of the 95 Theses, which remain unchanged, which change, and which disappear in his later writings? After translating and analyzing the 95 Theses as a group, we discussed and agreed upon six themes: purgatory, the pope and the clergy, canonical law, indulgences, the gospel and salvation, and repentance. This poster will detail the experience of migrating the Sophie Digital Collection of Literary Works by German-Speaking Women from a website into an interactive site on Digital Commons by the Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University. The Sophie Project is named for Sophie von LaRoche and includes poetry, fiction, drama and film, song and music composition, essays, nonfiction writings and biographies all in native German language. It will highlight the structure built within Digital Commons to exhibit the richness of the content in the Sophie Collection and the interactive linking within the metadata fields.

This project describes an investigation into the efficacy of employing a modified project-based learning model to enhance the presentation and conversation skills of students in German 235: Intermediate German Conversation. Unlike usual language conversation courses that rely on expensive textbooks and focus on reading selections followed by discussion questions, GER 235 sought to engage students in a journey of discovery as they explored topics typically more at home in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics courses (STEM) and that were supplemented by the arts: STEAM. Kinder- und Jugendliteratur, children’s literature written for the purpose of teaching or entertaining young people, has been present in German literature since the Middle Ages. This genre has changed as German literature progressed, reflecting the developments of each era, including such periods as the Romantic, the Biedermeier, Realism, Modernism and Postmodernism. As such, we examined individual works of German Kinder- und Jugendliteratur for the purpose of identifying distinctive features which situate them within children’s literature as well as in the respective historical genre. Heute, werde ich mich mit zwei Filmen der Nachkriegszeit befassen, Die Blechtrommel (Völker Schlöndorff, 1979) und der Italienische Film Amarcord (Federico Fellini, 1973).

In beiden Filme erlebt man Deutschland und Italien in den 1930er Jahren. Zu dieser Zeit waren beide Länder von Faschismus geprägt, was auch der Grund ist, warum ich beide Filme und Länder vergleiche. Zusätzlich ähneln sich die Filme bei der filmischen Darstellung des Faschismus. (Ferner, Die Filme sind bemerkenswert für die Nationalkinematographie Italiens und Deutschlands.)

Welcher Musiker als kulturell-wertvoll aufgefasst wird, wird von der Mainstreamgesellschaft, auf der Basis kolonialer ‘Rassenhierarchien' festgelegt. Hauptsächlich ‘reinweiße’ Musiker sind als Musiker Teil einer ‘höheren Rassenhierarchie’. Diese ‘Rassenhierarchie’ wird sowohl von der Mainstreamgesellschaft als auch von Rechtsextremisten geschätzt. Allerdings geschieht dies in einem deutlicheren und auch offenerem Maße bei Rechtsextremisten.

Background: The composer Richard Wagner often expressed his distaste for “number” operas and other contrived forms used in the Italianate works of his forerunners and contemporaries. In place of these operatic conventions, Wagner drew upon the Tragedy of Ancient Greece to propose a “total artwork” (Gesamtkunstwerk)) with no contrived breaks for conventional form. Despite, or perhaps because of, his aversion toward operatic formal conventions, Wagner turned to one such form for his music for King Mark in Tristan und Isolde.

The Roma and Sinti represent presence and absence in German culture. Although there has been a population of Roma and Sinti in Germany for centuries, they are often perceived by the German majority population as distinctly "eastern" and, as such, non-German. The perceptions of Roma by the German majority population mimic Orientalist assumptions, where the Roma are romanticized, criminalized, and generally devalued in comparison to Eurocentric narratives. Through an analysis of the Roma presence in German history, literature, and current events, one can see that the experience of the Roma in Germany is largely structured by the perceptions and assumptions …
