This study shows that a recurring criticism of Francophone literatures often borrows from the essentialist theses of colonial anthropology, and that tendency is even stronger when it comes to the novels by Francophone women writers. The overwhelming majority of critical studies devoted to the subject continue to consider their works as the simple feminist discourses or even the naive testimonies. However, this criticism forgets that since the 1990s, Francophone women’s writing has been part of a world literature that articulates deep postcolonial mutations, both generic and discursive, and reassesses the sexual etiology of fictional societies. In this article, I argue that in Boubacar Boris Diop’s work, the articulation between aesthetic experimence and writing from memory confers on his character-narrators the functions of “écrivain-écrivain” and “écrivain porte-parole”. This sheds light on both aspects of the Senegalese’s author commitment through his main characters, as most of them are writers who themselves show the mechanism of creation of the novel. The metaphor of the mangrove captures an aesthetic issue common to works of Glissant and Condé: how to write the geography of a radical loss and an unexpected digenesis. As Drabinski (2019) remarks, the Glissantian mangrove is the paradoxical place of an aesthetic of the abyss, which tries to capture the fragile birth instead of a loss without traces. These aspects highlight unusual or contradictory aspects, even serious situations. The aim of this caustic humor is to correct negative situations, especially to denounce the defects of hypocrisy and intolerance. The humorous strategy in Guelwaar is part of the Senegalese filmmaker-novelist’s perspective of a didactic project aimed at the whole of Africa.

Is it possible to translate nonsense? If yes, then how?

Lewis Carroll’s “Jabberwocky” is a nonsense poem in which many of the words are invented out of the author’s imagination. As a result, readers depend on Carroll to explain the meanings of such words. The first stanza of “Jabberwocky,” chosen since it contains the largest number of nonsense words in the poem, was analyzed and compared to the first stanza of two French translations (“Le Jaseroque” by Frank L. Warrin and “Bredoulocheux” by Henri Parisot). A word-by-word, and to an extent, syllable-by-syllable close reading of the three texts was performed …

Detected for the first time in 1976 in Northern Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo) and in Southern Sudan (now South Sudan), the Ebola virus has reemerged periodically mainly in Sub-Saharan Africa. The deadliest outbreak of Ebola occurred in Guinea, eventually spread to Liberia and Sierra Leone from 2014-2016. At the end, there were 28, 652 cases and 11, 325 deaths (cdc.gov). The outbreak generated international news coverage and sparked panic, especially once cases were reported in the U.S., in Spain and in the UK. Mohammed Dib, in his Algerian trilogy, demonstrates the effects of expropriation and mendicancy on the patterns of migration of agricultural laborers, illustrating the historical context of colonial Algeria through the act of storytelling. Mohammed Dib in 1949 devised the idea to write “un roman aux proportions assez vastes qui devait présenter une sorte de portrait divers de l’Algérie” (Déjeux 145) which would later become what constitutes the Algerian trilogy consisting of La Grande maison published in 1952, L’Incendie in 1954, and finally Le Métier à tisser in 1957. In novels that stage migratory pathways, the exploring characters can perform circulation through different channels and processes, without necessarily operating a physical movement. A geographical and a corporeal process exist, but even when the concrete, physical exploration stops, it is somehow also both lived, experienced, reconstructed and imagined differently through the body and through corporeal exploration. In this paper, I argue that embodied memory can circulate through points of entanglement without any process of movement physically occurring, and these points of entanglement can all be observed interacting in the body of the migrant. Roblès’ and Camus’ literary as well as epistolary testimonies disrupt the French-Arab/Berber dichotomous colonial narrative, thus expanding pied-noir legacies and unraveling little-known aspects of the mostly forgotten, yet indelible Spanish presence in colonial Algeria.

The theoretical framework follows a multidisciplinary approach drawing from literature, psychology and legal studies to investigate how assertive literary testimonies can switch perspectives on what will be remembered.

The contemporary French novel is striking in its diversity, its complexity, and its resistance to easy classification.
