Review Of The Mills On The Floss: George Eliot & Le Moulin Sur La Floss, Alain Jemeau
Review Of The Mills On The Floss: George Eliot & Le Moulin Sur La Floss, Alain Jemeau
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
Writing to her first French translator, Francois d' Albert-Durade, in 1865, George Eliot remarked on how little known his translations appeared to be in France, since she was always being approached by people who wanted to translate her works into French. After her death d' Albert-Durade's La Famille Tulliver: ou le Moulin sur la Floss did go on to be reprinted several times from the late nineteenth century onwards, but it has now been superseded by a new translation by Alain Jumeau which will have more appeal to modem readers and will certainly reach a far wider audience than d' …
Annual Report 2003, Kathleen Adams
Annual Report 2003, Kathleen Adams
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
The Fellowship year always begins with the Annual General Meeting and in 2003 we amended our Constitution to exclude our Vice Presidents from the management team. This was because the Charity Commission rule that all members of the Fellowship Council are automatically trustees of the charity, and are unable to receive any payment from the Fellowship. This meant that we could not pay any of them for lectures, readings etc - an unacceptable situation. All the Vice Presidents were happy with this decision and we still keep them closely in touch with our affairs through the Minutes of the Council's …
'That Vankyke Duchess': Portraiture And Epic In Daniel Deronda, Susannah Rutherglen
'That Vankyke Duchess': Portraiture And Epic In Daniel Deronda, Susannah Rutherglen
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
Portraits abound in Daniel Deronda - not only on the drawing-room walls of the Grandcourts and Mallingers, and in the 'grave Holbein faces' of the Meyrick family lithographs, but also in the actions and physiognomies of the novel's characters themselves. Daniel, in whom 'the family faces of various types, seen on the walls of the gallery, found no reflex' (166), nonetheless 'had that sort of resemblance to the preconceived type which a finely individual bust or portrait has to the more generalized copy left our minds after a long interval' (479).1 Gwendolen, 'that Vandyke duchess of a beauty' (558), sees …

'That Most Despicable Travesty Of A Women': Eliza Lynn Linton And Elma Stuart, Kathleen Adams
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
The George Eliot Collection in Nuneaton Library includes a previously unpublished letter written by Elma Stuart, one of George Eliot's greatest admirers. It was written in response to a critical and spiteful article about George Eliot in 1895 by Eliza Lynn Linton in the journal The Woman at Home. It was inevitable that the vicious article would antagonize Elma, who was so besotted with her idol that she had engraved upon the headstone on her grave in Highgate Cemetery in London - and next to George Eliot's own grave .... 'whom for 8'h blessed years George Eliot called by the …

Review Of Rereading George Eliot: Changing Responses To Her Experiments In Life, Bernard J. Paris
Review Of Rereading George Eliot: Changing Responses To Her Experiments In Life, Bernard J. Paris
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
While he was still writing his doctoral thesis, which became his influential Experiments in Life: George Eliot's Questfor Values (1965), Paris fully accepted the rhetoric in Eliot's fiction that is designed to shape our moral and intellectual responses to her characters. By rhetoric Paris means not just Eliot's 'authorial commentary but titles, chapter headings, epigraphs, characters' observations about one another, the use of foils and juxtapositions, and a wide variety of stylistic and tonal devices ... ' (p.15). All of these combine to persuade us to see her characters maturing, becoming wiser, more often than not through painful bouts of …
The Two Timothy Coopers, Barbara Hardy
The Two Timothy Coopers, Barbara Hardy
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
Once or twice when I read and re-read the scene of the railway survey in Middlemarch I felt a sense of niggling lost connection, then one day I belatedly found it. George Eliot had copied the name of Elizabeth Gaskell's Timothy Cooper, in Cousin Phillis, for her character in Middlemarch.
Eliot wrote to Gaskell1 that she felt an affinity with 'the feeling which inspired "Cranford" and the earlier chapters of "Mary Barton'" and had read Cranford when writing Scenes of Clerical Life and Mary Barton when writing Adam Bede. When The Moorland Cottage was proposed as source for The Mill …

Women As School Principals: What Is The Challenge?, Valerie R. Helterbran, Sue A. Rieg
Women As School Principals: What Is The Challenge?, Valerie R. Helterbran, Sue A. Rieg
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
From 1988 to 1998 the percentage of female school principals increased from 20% to 48% and continues to grow. The number of women entering school administration has grown as has the number of principal turnovers. Women who seek positions in educational leadership face many issues. Ten barriers that continue to surface in the research are: little encouragement to assume leadership roles; lack of female role models; perceived need to be "better qualified"; women cannot discipline older, male students; resentment of males working for females; some educators prefer male principals; reluctance to relocate; long hours; women lack the desire for power; …
Black Women Administrators In Historically Black Institutions: Social Justice Project Rooted In Community, Gaetan Jean-Marie
Black Women Administrators In Historically Black Institutions: Social Justice Project Rooted In Community, Gaetan Jean-Marie
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
Black women are subjected to both racism and sexism; those who achieve privileged status are also the targets of classism. Frazier (1957), in addressing issues of the Black bourgeoisie, said "the frustration of the majority of the women ... is probably due to the idle or ineffectual lives which they lead" (p. 222). These negative judgments are based on the gaze, in other words, who these women "look like" from the outside. We hear a different story when listening to the voices of Black women educators working for social change.

Review Of The Southwest Airlines Way: Using The Power Of Relationships To Achieve High Performance By J. H. Gittell., John M. Palladino
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
In The Southwest Airlines Way: Using the Power of Relations to Achieve High Performance, Gittell, an assistant professor of management at Brandeis University and a member of Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Global Airline Industry Program, provides a template of female leadership. Gittell described Southwest Airlines as a gemstone in the industry. After the tragedy of September 11, 2001, Southwest did not layoff employees; yet, the airline showed profit each year. Southwest's 2002 $9 billion total market value was greater than all other major airlines combined (Gittell, 2003, p. 3). Fortune magazine called Southwest "the most successful airline in history," praise …
Racial And Ethnic Preferences In College Admissions: How Much Is Too Much?, Donald F. Uerling
Racial And Ethnic Preferences In College Admissions: How Much Is Too Much?, Donald F. Uerling
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
Two 2003 Supreme Court decisions - Grutter v. Bollinger and Gratz v. Bollinger-considered challenges to the use of racial preferences in the admissions policies of two different colleges at the University of Michigan. Taken together, these two Equal Protection Clause decisions stand for the propositions that the educational benefits resulting from a diverse student body can be a compelling government interest and that race and ethnicity can be used as a "plus" to promote that interest, but not to the extent that such a preference insulates minority applicants from competition with other applicants and ensures the admission of nearly every …
Women In The Superintendency: Opting In Or Opting Out?, Mimi Wolverton, R. Timothy Macdonald
Women In The Superintendency: Opting In Or Opting Out?, Mimi Wolverton, R. Timothy Macdonald
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
The purpose of this article was to report the most common career path to the superintendency in the Northwest. We compared career paths across four subgroups of study participants-male and female superintendents and male and female certificate holders who were not superintendents. First, we sought commonalities in the routes chosen by current male and female superintendents in the study. Second, we examined the career choices of potential superintendency applicants to determine whether they were actually gaining the types of administrative experience required by school boards and search consultants. We concluded with implications for practice based on study findings.

Race, Culture, And Strategies For Success Of Female Public School Administrators, Marie Byrd-Blake
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
The purpose for conducting this study was to examine the differences among African American, Hispanic, and white female public school administrators with respect to their perceptions of successful strategies that led to career advancement. Female public school administrators continue to experience barriers to career advancement. The data revealed that Hispanic females perceived themselves as more successful in utilizing more strategies than African American and white females. Few females reported utilizing the informal mentoring technique of forming "new girl networks."

A Long History Of Scholarship, Marilyn L. Grady, Barbara Lacost
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
The Journal of Women in Educational Leadership is an early mark in the 21 st century timeline and lengthens the chronological chart of women in history. In this issue, Mertz' longitudinal study of scholarship about women is extended, and Byrd-Blake offers perceptions of African American, Hispanic and white females concerning the strategies that enhance career advancement. Rhodes provides profiles of two women community college presidents and the lessons these women offer others considering the role. White, Martin & Johnson examine gender, professional orientation, and student achievement in their study of 100 school principals.

Gender, Professional Orientation, And Student Achievement: Elements Of School Culture, Teresa White, Barbara N. Martin, Judy A. Johnson
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
This study explored the relationships between professional orientation (defined as how the principal sees his or her role in the organization) and school culture, the influence of gender on professional orientation, and the relationship between school culture and the academic achievement of students. One hundred principals were surveyed. Two instruments, the Professional Orientation and the School Culture Survey were completed. The results were analyzed using linear regression statistics to determine (a) gender and professional orientation effect on the factors of school culture, and (b) if factors of school culture had an effect on student success in the elementary school. Findings …

She chooses her occupation in such a way as corresponds with her wishes, inclinations and natural abilities, and she works under conditions identical with man's. Even if engaged as a practical working woman on some field or other, at other times of the day she may be educator, teacher, or nurse, as yet others she may exercise herself in art, or cultivate some branch of science, and yet others may be filling some demonstrative function. Review Of Women In Higher Education An Encyclopedia. Ana M. Martinez Aleman And Kristen A. Renn, Editors., Jean M. Haar
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
Women have constituted a majority of students in American colleges and universities since 1979. Women earned more than half of all associates, bachelors and masters degrees and more than one-third of all doctorates (Touchton & Davis, 1991). Even with these numbers, the study of women in higher education has often been overlooked (Glazer, Bensimon, & Townsend, 1993). Women in Higher Education: An Encyclopedia atones for overlooking "almost entirely women's role as shapers and interpreters of the academy" (Glazer et al., p. ix). The editors have created a comprehensive source of information and resources related to women in higher education in …

Emerging From The Academic Pipeline: Senior Women Faculty Members, Florence A. Hamrick
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
Twenty-six women with professor rank at a large, public, research extensive university were interviewed for this study in which respondents discussed the meanings and significance associated with full professorship. Major themes included: the promotion event and the accompanying title of professor, anticipated and actual changes in their status and working conditions, and their identities, goals, and contributions as professors. Conclusions address issues such as dilemmas of senior professorship, effective participation in institutional governance, and progress of women through the faculty ranks.

Two Profiles Of Women Community College Presidents, Melinda Rhodes
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
This study focuses on the narratives of two women leaders, one of whom continues to work as a community college president and another who made the transition from a community college presidency to the directorship of a continuing education division of a large, state research university. The women were first interviewed in 2000 when they discussed their own career characteristics and views of women presidency leadership issues. At that time, one was considering accepting a post leading a northwest community college undergoing drastic changes in mission, goals and target student population. She served as that college's president in 2002.

Title Ix: Boom Or Bust?, Marilyn J. Mather
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
Athletics has been significantly impacted by Title IX through an increase the number of female athletes, the number of teams available, and indirectly, the development of women's professional leagues. However, women in leadership positions in athletics have declined significantly since Title IX was signed into law. A concern about the discontinuation of some men's non-revenue producing sports influenced the Department of Education to form the Commission on Opportunities in Athletics to review Title IX. The process and findings of the Commission are discussed, as well as the possible impact of the Commission's recommendations.

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
This study focused on increasing the awareness of educational leaders about the relationship between students with communication disorders and violence. A review of selected research on adolescent females with language problems residing in a correctional facility served to support a survey study and extend discussions about the need for educational leadership within this population. Ninety-six speech-language pathologists, special educators, and teachers were surveyed about their training and knowledge on the role of communication in violence. Findings suggested the majority of participants agreed on the importance of planning prevention programs. However, they did not receive training and were uncertain about providing …
