La Science, La Science-Fiction Et La Mémoire Dans L'Œuvre De Primo Levi, Ilona Klein Jan 1997

La Science, La Science-Fiction Et La Mémoire Dans L'Œuvre De Primo Levi, Ilona Klein

Faculty Publications

Memories And Dreams : A Freudian Look At Proust, Barbara Alexander Baroody Aug 1974

Memories And Dreams : A Freudian Look At Proust, Barbara Alexander Baroody

Master's Theses

Proust, born some fifteen years after Freud; was equally fascinated with the potential for the unconscious mind. He was obsessed by the desire to overcome the destructive force of Time and assure tor himself a place in eternity. He wanted to project himself into the future by creating a work of art, for he believed that Art, alone surpassed Time. His work of art would be a novel, but rather than simply recounting past experiences, he sought to actually bring them to life again by evoking in the reader the same sensations he experienced. Dreams and those memories which rise …

Section XII: The Post-Enlightenment Period

Criticism of the methods and conclusions of the Enlightenment was initiated almost as soon as the movement itself had begun. It is for this reason that this chapter follows immediately after the one on the Enlightenment, rather than after the later chapters on nationalism, liberalism, industrialism, evolutionary biology, and the social sciences. These movements made their appearance during the latter part of the eighteenth century, but often served only to broaden and strengthen the earlier criticisms of the Enlightenment and the demands for a more adequate way of thinking than it offered. The movements of thought with which we are …

An Analysis Of Romain Rolland, Mildred Lagomarsino Jan 1950

An Analysis Of Romain Rolland, Mildred Lagomarsino

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The first fifty years of Romain Rolland’s life were spent in inconspicuous and almost solitary labors. From then on this name became a storm center of European discussion

The significance of his life’s work becomes plain only when it is contemplated as a whole. It was slowly produced, for it had to encounter great dangers; it was a gradual revelation, tardily consummated. The foundations of this splendid structure were deeply dug in the firm ground of knowledge, and were laid upon the hidden masonry of years spent in isolation. Owing to the strength of its foundations, to the solidity of …

A Basic French Vocabulary, Charlotte F. Kupper Mar 1937

A Basic French Vocabulary, Charlotte F. Kupper

Bachelors’ Theses

In 1931 a committee was appointed by the French section of the Association of Modern Language Teachers of the Central West and South to undertake the task of securing a basic French vocabulary list which was to be designed to meet the teaching needs of American schools and which, it was hoped, would become basic for the construction of elementary textbooks and of tests and for the editing of graded reading texts. The list, containing 2753 items, was finally submitted as "A Basic French Vocabulary" - suggested as basic for the two-year course in high schools and for the first …

The Cynical Philosophy Of The Poet Francois Villon With Special Reference To His Obscure Existence, Robert E. La Due May 1930

The Cynical Philosophy Of The Poet Francois Villon With Special Reference To His Obscure Existence, Robert E. La Due

Bachelors’ Theses

When so much has been written about Maistre Francois Villon, the Poet of the fifteenth century, the question arises: why another essay on this subject? Why attempt to repeat Longnon, Payne, and Lewis? Most of what has been written, however, has centralized about Villon as a rogue and a genius at the many taverns of medieval Paris. It is true that at times remarks have been made in passing, of Villon’s Cynical Philosophy, or his Cynical Humor, but no one has taken it up to make it a unit of consideration. In this brief essay the sources were not consulted …
