Book abstract:

The life and the range of topics and tones of Emily Dickinson suit her to be included in such courses as American literature, Romanticism, realism, nineteenth-century culture, and women’s literary traditions. Her poetry poses numerous challenges for readers because of its compressed style, indeterminacy, and constant surprises; her biography fascinates students and critics alike.

This volume emphasizes instruction of Dickinson’s poetry at the undergraduate level. Like other volumes in the MLA’s Approaches to Teaching World Literature series, it is divided into two parts. This collection consists of materials related to the Spencer Wallace Cone family spanning 1810-1976 with the majority of materials dated between 1810 and 1892.. Materials include nineteenth and early twentieth century correspondence between members of the Cone family, including Spencer Houghton Cone and Spencer Wallace Cone. Also included are military documents related to the 61st New York Infantry regiment, legal documents, biographical information, sermons and notes by Spencer Houghton Cone, records of the Oliver Street Church (1825-1840), a household account book, photographs, and records relating to the settlement of Spencer Houghton Cone II’s estate. The high apostle of the adventure tale in the Strenuous Age, Jack London has never really relinquished the popularity which made him before his death one of the best known and, most widely read writers in the world. It is true that more than one pontiff of literary taste has consigned him to the same, "obsolete" file that contains the remains of Richard Harding Davis, David Graham Phillips, William Sidney Porter, but such reports of London's demise have undoubtedly been premature. Richard Brautigan is an epiphenomenon in American literature. He seems to represent some sort of insubstantial alternative. While the academy of letters reads Beckett, Borges, and Nabokov, the kids read Brautigan...His appeal consists primarily in an irrepressible optimism (probably the brand of a woodsy Pacific Northwest background), a style flashing with artifice, and a total disregard for effete university culture. Mr. Brautigan is not himself the product of American higher education or of much formal training of any kind. Theodore Dreiser is usually hailed as a pioneer of American realism who freed American literature from Victorian restraints, from nineteenth century idealism and optimism, and from the ever-present moralizing of domestic sentimentalism. It is interesting to note, however, that this shockingly modern trailblazer not only stands at the dawn of a new era in literature, but also at the twilight of the old, for in Dreiser is a mixture of both the new realism and naturalism and the old sentimentalism that had dominated American literature from its inception.
