This review by Dr. Stephanie Medden, Assistant Professor of English and Media Studies at Bentley University, evaluates two open textbooks: “Exploring Public Speaking: The OER College Public Speaking Textbook” and “Stand Up, Speak Out: The Practice and Ethics of Public Speaking.” Medden concludes that while both resources are good introductions for teaching public speaking, supplementation is recommended due to both textbooks being limited in covering multimodal communication.

This review by Dr. Kristin Roberts Raymond, lecturer in the English and Media Studies Department and the Director of ESOL at Bentley University, evaluates three OER textbooks for public speaking: "Exploring Public Speaking," "Speak Out, Call In: Public Speaking as Advocacy," and "Stand Up, Speak Out: The Practice and Ethics of Public Speaking." Each text is assessed for its strengths and weaknesses. The reviewer concludes that a combination of these texts would be ideal for teaching, highlighting the benefit of OER resources in allowing instructors to draw from multiple sources without additional cost to students.

Canadian Filipino Joanna Cacao serves as the illustrator for The Tryout and does superb drawing expressions and emotions aligning with text in bubbles and boxes implying thinking or speaking. The story centers on Christina, who is a 7th grader living in a small town in Texas trying out for the middle school’s cheerleading squad. She tries to fit in, deals with racism, maintains friendships, develops new hobbies, and learns more about herself as a multiracial Asian American. …

The thesis examines and explains literary techniques of historical fiction. Observations and studies of historical photographs and handwritten letters, along with qualitative research through studies, journals, historical fiction pieces, and Chicago info-maps, provided accuracy for the historical fiction and a clear reflection of humanity, which is significant in understanding the argument.

Ultimately, the historical fiction shows not just 1930 American society, but where it is today. The thesis argues and proves that whimsical tones are appropriate and effective despite the uneasy time and setting and the foreboding conflicts during 1930.

The effective development of undergraduate chemistry students for success in professional and academic careers involves emphases on content knowledge and on writing and authorial voice. Unfortunately, most undergraduate chemistry instruction wholly neglects writing and authorial voice instruction in favor of content knowledge instruction. This results in the development of chemistry students who know the content of their field but not how to communicate that knowledge or how to enter the chemistry discourse with their own research.
