Theology In Milton's "Paradise Lost", Ernest Joseph Wilderson

This thesis, submitted to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Master of Arts degree in 1943, examines the theological content of John Milton's epic poem Paradise Lost through systematic comparison with the accepted doctrines of Christian and non-Christian religious traditions. The study analyzes six major theological themes in the poem: the Trinity, Creation, Free Will, Satan, the Fall of Man, and the Redemption. For each theme, the author compares Milton's poetic elaborations against the teachings of Catholic Church Fathers including Augustine, Aquinas, Hilary of Poitiers, and Chrysostom, as well …

An estimate of Noel Coward's contribution to the comedy of manners necessitates an understanding of: (1) the nature and the place of the comedy of manners in modern drama, (2) Noel Coward's background, and (3) an analysis of Noel Coward's formula for the comedy of manners. We find in the material relating to modern drama. little discussion of the comedy of manners. Occasionally plays may be mentioned as comedies of manners, but there is no discussion as to the specific nature of the comedy of manners in modern drama. Philosophic Trend Of American Negro Poetry, George Stevens

This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Master of Arts degree in 1939, traces the philosophic trend in American Negro poetry from 1761 to the contemporary period, examining the shift from an idealistic, religiously grounded poetic sensibility toward a naturalistic worldview. Drawing on primary poetry collections, anthologies, and critical studies of Black American literature, the thesis divides its analysis into three literary-historical periods: the Early Period (1761-1865), the Pre-Renaissance Period (1866-1899), and the Renaissance Period (1900 to the time of writing).

This thesis, submitted in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education, presents a survey of the life and dramatic works of William Shakespeare, situated within the broader history of English drama. The thesis traces English drama's origins in medieval Catholic Church miracle plays and moralities through the development of Bible drama, interludes, and early English comedy and tragedy, before turning to the Elizabethan stage on which Shakespeare wrote.

The departure of Spenser for Ireland in 1580 as secretary to Lord Grey of Wilton, newly appointed Lord Deputy of Ireland, marks a significant point in the poet's career. Save for occasional trips to England, the remaining years of his life Spenser spent in this "salvage land", among a hostile and turbulent people, far from the brilliance of English court life and "Elisa's blessed fields." The Catholic Spirit In Modern Poetry, Anna Marie Lacaze

This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education in 1932, traces the revival of Catholic spirit in modern English poetry following its suppression after the Protestant Reformation. Lacaze argues that this revival began with the Oxford Movement of the nineteenth century and its leader, John Henry Newman, whose conversion to Catholicism and subsequent writing exercised a lasting influence on English literary and religious culture.
