Rabindranath Tagore was born in 1861 and died in 1941. Both his life and thought span the epoch of renascent India, and his novels realistically reflect the problems and struggles of the Indian people during the past century. In this thesis Tagore 's development, not so much as a great novelist but as a social commentator and reformer, is discussed. His role as a liberal mediator between the violent reactionary and the vehement traditionalist is a predominant factor in all of his prose writings, and it is from this point of view that each of his novels is examined.

The hypothesis that students who do not take freshman composition courses in college are equal in writing performance to students who do take freshman composition after being in college for an equal length of time was tested in the pilot phase of a recent study, The Effectiveness of College-Level Instruction in Freshman Composition. The English language has undergone many changes since its evolution from the Teutonic dialects. It has become simplified in many ways; one area of simplification is in the second person pronoun. Originally nine different forms of the Old English pronoun of address appeared, while today only three {you, your, yours) remain. Although ambiguity can and does result from only one form in the nominative and objective case (i.e., whether you is singular or plural in reference), the English-speaking people have reduced the pronoun to the same nominative and objective form as a means of linguistic economy. John Steinbeck demonstrates a shift from the group hero, in some of his earlier novels, to the individual hero in his later novels. It is evident that in East of Eden and The Winter of Our Discontent Steinbeck is more concerned with the individual human being than he was in such earlier novels as Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath. A contrast with two novels which fall in an earlier period, 1940 and before, will clarify the development of the individual man as hero in Steinbeck's later novels. When one reads many of the long narrative poems of Robinson Jeffers, one wonders at the characters who act out their lives against a backdrop of the contemporary California coastal region. The characters live isolated lives as ranchers, farmers, and farm women; they go about the business of eking out an existence, of cultivating their land, of caring for their livestock.
