It is the purpose of this study (1) to discover any factors in William Caxton's early life which might have led him to become a printer; (2) to learn how Caxton established. his printing press in England; (3) to examine Caxton's printing business in relation to his competitors; (4) to determine the quality of literature translated by Caxton and printed by his press; (5) to determine if Caxton did contribute to the standardization of the English language.

The investigation into the life and work of Beatrix Potter was prompted by interest in and enjoyment of the work of this author. The Tale of Peter Rabbit was the real extent of the acquaintance with Beatrix Potter. Perhaps the appreciation of the art in this book was even more fundamental. A serious desire for children to be familiar with the original story rather than the reproductions was a factor in wanting to know more about this woman and more about what she had produced.

Dylan Thomas wrote numerous short stories which reveal a completely different aspect of his writing and thinking from that of the highly symbolic, often existential nature of his poetry. He was able, in his short stories, to recall and tell the many-faceted feelings of a boy as he grows from early childhood into young adulthood. Shakespeare's Cymbeline reveals throughout, in its characters, plot and imagery, the reintegrating and regenerating influences of Nature. The entire play is dominated by Nature--birds, trees, flowers, mountains, streams and other natural elements. The characters are either naturally good or naturally bad; and while the good characters survive and repent of their erring, the bad characters die, as a result of their own evil, absolutely unregenerate. Nature in the play is thus seen as an active force which works both on and through the characters, who at times seem quite passive. In order to illustrate the manifestations of Nature, the poet …

To the majority of Americans, women's liberation is a common term among most circles. Just recently another group is capturing the headlines and will be gaining more support with this publicity. This group has coined the name "Feminists on children's Media." Their attacks are becoming greater as more parents, librarians, and concerned citizens become actively involved in the way women and men are stereotyped in both juvenile literature and school textbooks. Previously, critics had concentrated on the intermediate level of reading, while now, more are becoming interested in picture books and beginning readers.

The major problem confronting a student of Paradise Regained is to relate theology, philosophy, and drama. Critics, in the main, have either oversimplified the issues, or have given lopsided interpretations of the poem, emphasizing one aspect to the detriment of others of significance. Consequently, as noted in the Introduction, our study examines Paradise Regained's central theological and philosophical equation of Being and Freedom. The consistency with which John Steinbeck evaluated his characters by revealing the nature of their commitments indicates the importance of love as a motivational and thematic force in his work. In every novel that he wrote from 1933 to 1961, the characters were defined by the extent to which they loved and were loved. They were enlarged by belonging to and being responsible for the thing they loved. They were diminished by rejection or failure in love. Love, in the Steinbeck novels, included a wide variety of commitments that shared, in addition to a common function in the lives of …

William Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi includes characters and situations that are often described as unexpected, abnormal, and even grotesque. Isaac Snopes of The Hamlet, Benjy Compson of The Sound and the Fury, and Jim Bond of Absalom, Absalom! represent three of the most extreme character portrayals found within the works of William Faulkner. They are described as idiots. This paper views these idiots as a continued development of a character type. The thesis for which this serves as an abstract consists of a critical investigation of the concept of salvation as seen in the fiction of Flannery O'Connor. To the casual reader, O'Connor's stories provide entertainment, but on more careful perusal, the reader perceives a certain pattern in each story which points to the attainment of salvation. O'Connor is a Catholic writer who enjoys a universal appeal because of the concepts with which she deals .
