Allusion As Form: The Waste Land And Moulin Rouge!, Stacy Magedanz
Allusion As Form: The Waste Land And Moulin Rouge!, Stacy Magedanz
Library Faculty Publications & Presentations
Allusion is usually considered a literary technique, but relatively little attention has been paid to the notion of allusion as a literary form. In this essay, I attempt to describe the allusive form based on two prominent examples, T. S. Eliot’s Waste Land and Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge! Though radically different, the two works embody distinguishing characteristics of the allusive form. These are intertextuality, or a dependence upon outside sources for sense and significance; heightened and self-conscious artificiality; a confrontational attitude toward the audience; elitism, based on the exclusivity of allusions; appropriation of multiple cultures; and pervasive anachronism. Though prone …
Critical Literacy In A Global Context: Reading Harry Potter, Jill Reading
Critical Literacy In A Global Context: Reading Harry Potter, Jill Reading
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Millions of adolescents across the globe eagerly await and read each new Harry Potter fictional novel. As a series, the novels can be assumed to participate influentially in the production of adolescent literacies and subjectivities. Situated in politically conservative times, however, the texts may support readings in simple accord with culturally pervasive conservative views which favour conventionally masculinist, martial views of the individual and of society. Such readings potentially confirm ancient prejudices built out of differences which themselves may be associated with the socio-cultural reproduction of violent conflicts. Nevertheless, contemporary conditions such as planetary climate change and globalised political fear …
Aesop's Fables And George Eliot's Brother And Sisters Sonnets, Margaret Wolfit
Aesop's Fables And George Eliot's Brother And Sisters Sonnets, Margaret Wolfit
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
It is always exciting to discover something new and to come upon it unexpectedly. That was my happy experience a few years ago. I had decided to try my hand at devising a biographical programme on George Eliot and to attempt to portray her at the end of her life, reminiscing on past events. I wanted to absorb as much as I could about her, starting with her early days. What were the influences that shaped her life and writing? What books had she read as a child?
She tells us: 'I could not be satisfied with the things around …

"Mark In This": Strategies Of Persuasion And Argument In John Donne's Poetry, Nazreen Laffir
"Mark In This": Strategies Of Persuasion And Argument In John Donne's Poetry, Nazreen Laffir
Honors College Theses
Whether he is writing an erotic lyric, a mutual love poem or a holy sonnet, John Donne's poems employ a similar argumentative structure. Although "The Flea", an erotic lyric, "The Canonization", a mutual love poem, and "Batter My Heart", a holy sonnet portray different types of love, Donne's argumentative structure in these poems is similar to each other. In "The Flea", "The Canonization" and "Batter My Heart", Donne's speakers present a claim or command which they defend throughout the rest of the poem. The speakers use persuasive strategies to defend and validate their assertion. As the poems conclude, the speakers …

Inside The Fairy Ring: Jane Eyre And The Victorian Fairy Tale, Kimberly Alford
Inside The Fairy Ring: Jane Eyre And The Victorian Fairy Tale, Kimberly Alford
English Theses & Dissertations
Focusing on nineteenth century literature in England, this paper explores the relationship of fairy tales to the realist novel. Even though the novels of the time are best known for being grounded firmly in realism, the world of fairies, existing most prominently in nineteenth-century children's literature, crept into novels and stories written for adults. The novel Jane Eyre, frequently discussed regarding its treatment of nineteenth century social issues, contains gothic and romantic elements alongside the realist mode. These elements contribute to a "transformation" of the text into a fairy tale. The novel becomes a fairy tale not in structure alone, …
The Soul Of Oscar Wilde Under Victorianism: A Psychological Biography, Carol Schnitzer
The Soul Of Oscar Wilde Under Victorianism: A Psychological Biography, Carol Schnitzer
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Oscar Wilde has fascinated generations of scholars and biographers for reasons having as much to do with the man as well as his work. In particular, his conflict with Victorian society, which engendered the drama that destroyed his career and eventually his life, has captured their imaginations and led to all kinds of speculations about why when the crunch came Wilde acted in a way so contrary to his own self-interest. His decision to sue the Marquess of Queenberry for libel and later to stand trial when the ensuing revelations about his private life resulted in his arrest on charges …

Strange Embedded Fellows: The Socio-Narrative Radicalism Of Ann Radcliffe's Gothic Romance, E. Jordan Sellers Jr.
Strange Embedded Fellows: The Socio-Narrative Radicalism Of Ann Radcliffe's Gothic Romance, E. Jordan Sellers Jr.
English Theses & Dissertations
Through a close narratological analysis of Ann Radcliffe's romances, this thesis will demonstrate that the form of Radcliffe's novels is fundamentally linked to her contemporary cultural contexts. Although traditional criticism of Radcliffe rather dubiously labels her a conservative writer and regularly cites her heroines and servants as idealized and submissive stock devices, this project will demonstrate that her characters have significant subversive agency based in narrative structure, which subtly points to the radicalism of Radcliffe's politics. These conventional readings of Radcliffe's novels have too long separated the concerns of servants, women, and Radcliffe's own politics. It is only when we …

(The Princess and the Goblin at the Gordon Schools, Huntly, December 15 through 17, 2004)
The Gordon Schools' production of The Princess and the Goblin was a treat. In Stuart Paterson's adaptation for the stage, George MacDonald's fable retains its particular charm; but, being a tale of good versus evil, it also provides the elements of pantomime.

An English Heritage blue plaque was unveiled by the wellknown biographer and novelist A.N. Wilson at Tudor Lodge, 20 Albert Street, Camden Town in north London on Tuesday 28th June. George MacDonald and his family lived at Tudor Lodge from 1860 to 1863 in the early days of his career as a writer. The plaque describes MacDonald most appropriately as a 'Story Teller'. Mr. Wilson made a speech quoting from his favourite MacDonald book, At the Back of the North Wind. Then the Society's Chairman, Richard Lines, made a short speech giving an overview of MacDonald's significance, followed by John …

Malory’S Maladies: Determining Intention And Influence Through Editorial Theory In Sir Thomas Malory’S Le Morte Darthur, Lisa Ann Stuchell
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
By examining both William Caxton’s edition and the Winchester manuscript of Malory’s King Arthur tales, readers can begin to understand the editorial theory issues associated with these dissimilar texts. Questions concerning authorial intention, final intention, versions, and scholarly editing arise as scholars and readers try to negotiate which is the better version. However, each version offers advantages and disadvantages of Malory’s work, culminating in the need for both versions to exist and to be studied.
Complexity Of Character In Jonson’S Sejanus, Jennifer Dawn Jones
Complexity Of Character In Jonson’S Sejanus, Jennifer Dawn Jones
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Critics claim Jonson’s Sejanus, the first of his only two surviving tragedies, lacks the emotional elements of more popular tragedies because Jonson relies on historical sources and simplifies his characters. This study first establishes Jonson’s own unique requirements in tragedy that affect his character development, then it provides textual evidence of complex characters and offers a reading of the play with Rome, or the body politic, as the tragic hero.
From Darwin To Dracula: A Study Of Literary Evolution, Erin Alice Lamborn
From Darwin To Dracula: A Study Of Literary Evolution, Erin Alice Lamborn
Theses Digitization Project
Argues that, without the publication of Charles Darwin's "Origin of Species," Bram Stoker's novel "Dracula" and Oscar Wilde's novel "The Picture of Dorian Gray" would not have been written with their distinct style and themes, as evolution clashes with degeneration and female power (and the sexuality derived from that power) clashes with the new science. Stoker and Wilde combine the science of the late 19th century with the characters of their imaginations. Natural and sexual selection plays a part in these characters' core development. The mixture of sexuality, science and power in these two novels all combine to formulate what …

Hogging The Limelight: The Queen's Wake And The Rise Of Celebrity Authorship, Jason N. Goldsmith
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
In the following essay, Goldsmith argues that The Queen's Wake is commentary on the literary name branding inaugurated by the periodical culture of Hogg's day. For Goldsmith, the "crisis of reception" staged in the poem--sixteenth-century provincial bards in a first encounter with royal spectacle--is not unlike the uneasy celebrity Hogg experienced as the Ettrick Shepherd of Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine.

Review Of George Eliot's Dialogue With John Milton, Anna K. Nardo
Review Of George Eliot's Dialogue With John Milton, Anna K. Nardo
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
This, despite some blemishes and limitations indicated in passing below, is an examination of selected writings by Milton, the stories about him, and the engagement with his life and works which is reflected in the life and works of George Eliot. Nardo's primary aim is to show how Eliot's 'strenuous dialogue with Milton's life and art ... animated the epic novels she wrote for an age of unbelief' (1). Immediately we are struck by the large claims implied by 'animated' and 'epic' and the convenient but dubious definition of 'an age of unbelief'. The statement does scant service to the …
Romantic Love As A Spiritual Companionship? A Buddhist Re-Reading Of George Eliot, Richard Winter
Romantic Love As A Spiritual Companionship? A Buddhist Re-Reading Of George Eliot, Richard Winter
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
Introduction
Like most of George Eliot's fiction, Daniel Deronda can be read as a story about the possibility of redemption. Gwendolen Harleth' s vanity and ambition make her vulnerable to Grandcourt' s desire for dominance, and their marriage is a disaster. Belatedly, Gwendolen comes to recognise that a marriage to Daniel Deronda instead of Grandcourt might have rescued her from her egotism and led to her moral and emotional salvation. But for Deronda finding a wife is part of exploring a wider social and spiritual significance for his existence - i.e. his Jewish cultural origin and the Zionist religious, historical, …
