Underlying student development at St. John's over its first century (1857- 1955), the University's mission was to help its students become educated, principled, and virtuous men whose experiences at St. John's would be an integral part of their adult lives. Within that century, however, there was a shift in St. John's approach to student development. From 1857 to 1920, the University concentrated more on the students' external discipline. Students were to pattern their livelihood on a series of rules and regulations. They also were under constant supervision, while at class, at church, in study hall, on their dorm floor, or …

Editor's Message

The prospect of bringing off a new journal is character building, I have come to believe—particularly when it is published only once a year and by a fledging organization. The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning (JAEPL) had to be good, very good, especially the inaugural issue. That this was the first issue also meant, I hoped, that readers would tolerate mistakes. Surely, mistakes could be corrected with the next issue. But on second thought, that was a long year away.

Promoting Attitude And Amount Of Leisure Reading By Selected Fourth Grade Students, Barbara Navin

In an effort to determine if media specialists can influence in a positive way the amount of leisure time reading elementary school students do, a study was designed which would test that hypothesis while involving students in two fourth grade classrooms, one of which was the control group and the other the experimental group. Specific activities such as booktalks, story and poetry breaks were performed only for the experimental group. This group also kept a list of books read in gaily decorated reading logs. Both groups kept a count of actual pages read, and actual books completed. Both groups were …

The Effect Of Booktalking On Fiction Circulation Statistics, Melinda J. Quinn

Five monthly booktalk programs were presented to the eighth grade reading classes at BGM School. Circulation statistics for first semester of 1992 when these students were in seventh grade were compared to the circulation statistics for the same semester of their eighth grade year in 1993 to determine if the booktalks made a significant difference in this group's reading habits.

An analysis of the data using the chi-square test indicated no significant difference at the .05 level in the circulation statistics for paperback books, hard bound books or total volumes. It seemed, though, that the students reacted positively to the …

Multicultural education is one of the most challenging issues for modern scholars. This thesis studies the issue of ethnicity in teaching, using the works of Leslie Marmon Silko and Louise Erdrich and the theory of R. Radhakrishnan which outlines "programmatic" and "radical" ethnicity. Louise Erdrich and Leslie Silko are women about the same age, of mixed-race heritage, but they represent very different agendas within the Native American community and the American community as a whole. They are not interchangeable; Erdrich focuses on individuals, Native and non-Native, inside a bizarre community. Her concept involves radical ethnicity. Silko's characters are more important …

Few people would deny that discrimination occurs in American society today. In spite of extensive national and local legislation intended to safeguard the rights of every individual, discrimination still exists although, of necessity, it is more insidious, often to the point of invisibility to all but those directly affected by it. Many groups of people experience discrimination in their everyday lives--Blacks, Hispanics, Vietnamese, physically handicapped persons, and the elderly--to name just a few. Another segment of our society, women, also experience discrimination.

A Content Validity Analysis Of The University Of Texas-Pan American English 1320 Grammar And Usage Exam, Cynthia Eilene Elder

This study examines the degree of content validity of the grammar and usage exam administered to The University of Texas-Pan American's developmental writing classes (English 1320). Final exam essays from the freshman composition course (English 1301) were divided into groups according to their scores and examined for the occurrence of adjective agreement, apostrophe, pronoun usage, punctuation of clause, sentence structure, subject-verb agreement, and tense usage errors, which are tested on the exam. An Analysis of Variance was then calculated for each error type; none of the error types proved statistically significant at the.05 level. The students within each group did …
