THEME
This June, the MDOCS' Storytellers' Institute explores the theme of "fact and fiction." Documentary works are evidence-based stories, working with facts to render, reveal, and represent truth(s) to inform and, at times, inspire action. Despite relying on real people, depicting real places, and presenting real events, documentaries engage by interpreting and representing reality (Lamarre 2009).
In the words of John Grierson (1926) (considered the father of the term "documentary"), a documentary film is a "creative treatment of actuality." Tools in a documentarian's kit are many -- and many that shape reaction and response are not that different than those …

A personal coming-of-age story made with real film reel about a crew of wildly diverse kids from the suburbs of New York City in the 1970's who had nothing in common but skateboarding yet forged lifelong friendships.

Oriented (2015) follows the lives of three gay Palestinian friends confronting their national and sexual identity in Tel Aviv, including Khader Abu Seif. Determined to "change their reality," the three best friends form a group called "Qambuta," a non-violent, cultural resistance movement fighting for gender and national equality. Through their activism, they address what it means to grow up with the burden of a multi-faceted identity.
This event is free and open to the public.

Synopsis: For the last 40 yrs, the photographer Sebastião Salgado has been traveling through the continents in the footsteps of an ever-changing humanity. He's witnessed some of the major events of our recent history; international conflicts, starvation and exodus. He's now embarking on the discovery of pristine territories, wild fauna and flora, and grandiose landscapes as part of a huge photographic project, which is a tribute to the planet's beauty.

Zurvan and his family had a good life in Afghanistan. He worked as a clerk in a spice shop. After doing business with a foreign company, the Taliban threatened him with death. To escape this threat, he and his family escaped to Iran and hired a smuggler to get them to Turkey. From there, they traveled to Greece in an overloaded boat. They have been living in a camp in Greece, stuck in limbo, ever since. Zurvan feels hopeless, like everyone in the camp is being treated in an inhumane manner.
