The purpose of this thesis is to examine characters caught up in a transformation of identity: either a transfiguration or a transmogrification. Through the lens of fantasy, I sought to explore the trials of these characters in an exaggerated fashion that allowed me to take familiar questions and themes and attempt to make them new. All of my characters face a realization of identity: either they are startled into understanding that they are not who they thought they were, or they struggle to assert their version of self against pressure to be what others want. Mulk Raj Anand is an innovator in literature. He is one of the first Indian authors to write in English about the humanitarian dilemmas facing India during the mid-twentieth century. His compassionate objective is to produce an awareness of the cruelty and inhumane practices of untouchability and social class distinctions and to seek the enlightening prospects of progress and modernity. In his three novels Coolie, Two Leaves and a Bud, and Untouchable, Anand explores the lives of of the down-trodden. The Dust Grows Hard is a collection of short stories taking place in Kansas. The stories take place in mostly rural or isolated settings. Thematically, the stories are concerned with the character's inability to effectively communicate and what that does to their ability to function in the larger society. Children of the Sun is a novel presented as main character Clay Felts's Master's thesis in anthropology. The story migrates from the Columbia Basin of Eastern Washington to the Peruvian Andes, following Clay's quest to translate Inca quipu knots. The novel engages with several themes, the most pervasive of which is the inscrutability of the human experience. From this foundation, the story goes on to explore the importance of family versus material accomplishment, the effects of discovery and loss, and the colonial enterprise.

Welcome to the 2010-2011 edition of The Skunk River Review!

As the new editor of this publication, I was excited to see the number of submissions and the overwhelming enthusiasm of the students. This year's publication includes work from Composition I, Composition II, Literature, and College Resources courses.

Whereas The Skunk River Review is academic work that begins in the classroom, it also reflects student's interests. The essays are not edited for MLA format or general errors because the publication is used as a teaching tool in many classrooms.

This collection of fiction that is not only a compilation of short stories, but a "serial collection". That is, the stories are organized into series, and these series placed in a series as well, making up the book. The purpose of this organization is to figure out to what extent the arrangement of stories significantly contributes to the reader's understand of, and engagement with, the particular elements of each story as they are both replicated and modified within and throughout the series. Eits is a work of fiction, a non-traditional novel whose structure is largely determined by an Oulipian-style constraint. The constraint in Eits is culled from the album names and song titles of the band Explosions in the Sky. Each album corresponds to a chapter in the novel, and the language of each album title must be used in some way as an introduction to each chapter. Within each chapter (album), song titles correspond to numbered sections where each title must appear as is in the first sentence of that section. Hold the camera steady, supporting it underneath. Then, with the sun behind your back or over your shoulder, locate the subject in the finder. At the instant of exposure, hold your breath and press the shutter release with a gentle squeezing action (Brownie Hawkeye Instruction Manual).
