The Thinnest Veil, Charles Butler
The Thinnest Veil, Charles Butler
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
The Thinnest Veil is a work of fiction set in a historical colonial world that traces the horrors of the transatlantic slave trade. The main character, Anuli, is abducted from her home in Nigeria and is sold into deeper levels of the American slave system. I wanted to write from a woman’s perspective in this project and think about what power this character would have in this world. I also wanted to explore West African culture and origin, and the influence they have left in other places they have been. In August 2025, I traveled to Barbados to research the …

The Keepers' Shadow, Julietta Thron
The Keepers' Shadow, Julietta Thron
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
"The Keepers' Shadow" is a 350-page fantasy novel. The project's base concept/idea is one I've always had, however, the in-depth world-building that brings that story to life is what I researched and expanded on during my independent study and thesis. The agriculture, economics, architecture and government systems are heavily influenced by Renaissance Italy, Spain, and Ireland. Moreover, I heavily researched and implemented themes/issues such as colonization, tyrannical governments, religious restriction/conflict, erasure of history, slave labor, and the successful use of fear mongering. These concepts are not ones unlike what we see in our own political and social climate today, hence …
Dark Wave - Comics And Transgender Studies In Practice, Mieke Vanderveen
Dark Wave - Comics And Transgender Studies In Practice, Mieke Vanderveen
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
This is a thesis in two parts. Its goal is to provoke the intersection of superhero comics and transgender studies in order to interrogate the parallels between those two identities and explore ways in which pairing them together can strengthen each other narratively and academically. Rather than seeking an answer to a question, the project as a whole serves as a way of communicating trans internalities from a transfeminine perspective in a format that brings the issues to the forefront of the narrative in an in-depth and entertaining way. The result is hopefully a coherent artistic work that achieves those …
Toil And Quietus, Dylan Mitchell
Toil And Quietus, Dylan Mitchell
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
The United States of America is haunted by its past. Be it the institution of slavery, the lack of gender equality, or the violent annexation of Native land, its ghosts are plentiful and undeniable. Still, though, questions of whether to venerate our nation’s history or condemn it pervade society. Now, then, is the time for the gothic.
For all of its existence, the gothic has served to shed light on the past, often casting on its dusty visage an ambivalence that weighs its good with its bad. Nowhere is this land more fertile than with American history, which is simultaneously …

110% Asset Disruption, Bradley W. Fish
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
110% Asset Disruption is a satire of the modern workplace set in a lightly dystopian near- future United States. Written as a feature length film, it follows Ethan Martens, a citizen and employee of Calcudyne. Ethan has a contentious relationship with his manager Douglas Farview, who performs a series of hostile actions towards Ethan in order to attempt to force him out of the company. The conflict between the two men escalates until Ethan is put in the position of having to prevent Calcudyne's President & CEO from starting a global thermonuclear war. 110% Asset Disruption is influenced and inspired …
You're Such A Princess, Andree Sole
You're Such A Princess, Andree Sole
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
You’re Such a Princess is a five-play anthology that reimagines well-known folk tales. By re-imagining four Brothers Grimm tales and one by Hans Christian Andersen, I follow a centuries-old tradition. As scholar Donald Haase explains, folk tales evolve with each retelling, allowing their ‘morals’ to shift over time. I have created encounters between real people (extending characters beyond Vladimir Propp’s Dramatis Personae) and revised the endings to challenge the audience. My Snow White character hews closer to the pejorative implications of calling someone a ‘princess’ in our society: entitled, arrogant, spoilt. Two of my storylines (Little Red Cap and The …
The Magdala Moms Of La Jolla, Rebecca Shepard
The Magdala Moms Of La Jolla, Rebecca Shepard
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
The Magdala Moms of La Jolla is a satirical novel set at The Magdala School, an elite Christian academy in La Jolla, California, where social status, curated faith, and community performance are indistinguishable. The story follows Mitzi Madigan, a brash, ambitious mother whose carefully constructed persona hides a troubling past. Her world begins to unravel when Caroline—a single mother working in construction—is granted a scholarship for her daughter, Emma, to attend Magdala.
As Emma enters the private school’s polished social ecosystem, she begins to uncover the secrets buried beneath the sun-drenched surface. The Mag Moms, a clique of hyper-polished, scripture-quoting …
All Things Pass Away, John Stuart Wilson
All Things Pass Away, John Stuart Wilson
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
“All Things Pass Away” is a work of crime fiction. Set amidst the downfall of local print journalism, laid off sportswriter Mark McGinnis travels from Rochester, New York to the oil boomtown of Fort McMurray, Alberta to pursue a freelancing project on troubled NHL draft prospect Noah Jeannot. Once there, McGinnis’s profile on the player is thrown into question when Jeannot disappears after an apparent violent altercation near his billet family’s home. Exploring themes of nostalgia, ambition, and obsession, the novella traces McGinnis’s attempts to understand not only the culture of the twin gods – oil and hockey – which …

Medieval And Modern: Celtic Mythology Through The Lens Of Urban Fantasy, L. E. Martchenke
Medieval And Modern: Celtic Mythology Through The Lens Of Urban Fantasy, L. E. Martchenke
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
My project, “Medieval and Modern: Celtic Mythology Through the Lens of Urban Fantasy” is the result of my interest and investment in Celtic mythology, and more specifically Irish mythology, most of our knowledge of which comes from records in the medieval period, made by Christian monks. I pursued research into Medieval Celtic myth and folklore to gain a deeper understanding of those stories of mythological figures and heroes. With that knowledge and genuine love for the source material, in this thesis, I have crafted three individual and distinct stories that capture mythological elements, such as a prominent Folk Hero or …

Samozvanets (The Pretender), Matthew Garrell, Alikzandr Malakov
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
he Russian word Samozvanets most directly translates to Imposter in English. However, for this thesis, I have selected the alternative interpretation of Pretender. Imposter implies the taking or assuming of another’s position. Pretender, more personally, carries the meaning of presenting self as something one is not. It is through the lens of the Pretender that I examine the idea of what it means to be a member of a particular ethnicity, and to engage with one’s cultural heritage. I do this through a collection of fictional stories, investigating various lives within the Russian diaspora following the dissolution of the Soviet …
The Razor And The Reel, Lee Mayes
The Razor And The Reel, Lee Mayes
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
“The Razor and The Reel” is a crime fiction novel focusing on the darker side of mass media, the corruption of ideals, and the nature of truth in an uncertain world. It is a nightmarish descent into an alternate history of the American 1920s, where the parallels to today's culture of prevailing despair, social collapse, and ruthless capitalism become increasingly obvious as the novel progresses. The plot follows a trio of gangsters as they attempt to rescue a runaway girl from a small but twisted southern town rampant with religious extremism and racism. This town (modeled after Orlando Florida before …
Harvest: A Story Of Afropessimism, Briana Williams, Briana Williams
Harvest: A Story Of Afropessimism, Briana Williams, Briana Williams
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Afropessimism is the idea that Black people will never be able to truly overcome the centuries of racism and oppression they have faced. A bleak notion, the idea heavily contrasts with Afrofuturism, the ways in which Black people use technology to regain their autonomy and rise from the societal binds they’re placed in. This story focuses on how even in the supposedly more evolved and progressive political landscape of the modern world, Black people still cannot escape the shackles of racism, particularly in the United States. Taking the common themes of and ideologies of Afropessimism, Harvest follows the story of …
The Prince Of New York, Eric Fantauzzi
The Prince Of New York, Eric Fantauzzi
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Inspired by both Kendrick Lamar’s 2017 album DAMN and Logic’s 2017 album Everybody, my project, “The Prince of New York,” is a story that speaks to the experiences of my character, Scott McKenzie. Using the thematic through line of athletics, the project is a coming-of-age story that shows Scott’s growth as both a high school athlete and a biracial teenager living in New York City. Throughout the story we see Scott navigate the pressures of living up to the expectations set by his parents, as well as those of being a star athlete. Initially, Scott wants to win a championship …

This Effeminate Stranger: Dionysus' Gender In Translation And Performance, August Guszkowski
Independent Student Projects and Publications
This Effeminate Stranger: Dionysus’ Gender in Translation and Performance explores the possible interpretation of the character of Dionysus in Euripides’ Bacchae as genderqueer, specifically nonbinary. The project consists of a translation of the Bacchae from Ancient Greek into English which pays special attention to instances where Dionysus’ character is treated as somewhere between or outside of the traditional male-female gender binary, including placing emphasis on the god’s “effeminate” appearance and ability to influence other people to act across gendered lines. The groundbreaking translation refers to Dionysus with they/them pronouns rather than the traditional he/him and embraces this surprisingly well-evidenced reading …
