Shared Shame And Affect In Nella Larsen's Passing, Claudia Ludwick

This project focuses on the negative affect of shame in Nella Larsen’s 1920s American novel, Passing. While shame is a universal feeling everyone feels, the project argues that Larsen’s two main characters, Irene Redfield and Clare Kendry, feel a specific type of invisible shame that pulls on them differently. For Irene, this shame is reactive and aggressive, but for Clare, this shame is passive and often ignored. The project details where and how the shame manifests for each character, particularly focusing on how shame can be seen visibly and invisibly in and on the body. In this thesis, I suggest that ostranenie is the artistic equivalent of chaos and it can be used by artists to grab and maintain the perception of an audience through the disruption of norms or pre-established conditions. Ostranenie, the device of art introduced by Russian Formalist Victor Shklovsky in his essay, “Art as Device,” is a device that gives absolute freedom to the creative person who isn’t afraid to use it to create original and engaging work. According to Darko Suvin in his influential critical treatise, Metamorphoses of Science Fiction, estrangement in Science Fiction (SF) gives authors the ability to build worlds related to but distant from our own using specific metaphors. This dissertation takes up this term and applies it to the fulcrum of time in SF as a method of creating possible futures and imaginative pasts in order to illuminate the realities of the present. This dissertation explores contemporary literary manifestations in the Canary Islands and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean, with a stronger focus on the islands of Tenerife and Puerto Rico. Through an archipelagic approach, this study delves into the analysis of Los lenguas cortadas (2020) by Cirilo Leal, Boat People (2005) by Mayra Santos-Febres, Panza de burro (2020) by Andrea Abreu and PR3 Aguirre (2018) by Marta Aponte Alsina. The analysis states that these literary works build alternative forms of affective archives of archipelagic memory. In this collection of poetry and prose, Nadine Koochou explores her Assyrian-American identity, retracing family history and merging it with her own reflections. Through creative essays, she communicates the things she knows, to some degree of certainty. Through poetry, she communicates things she thinks she knows, or feelings she understands intrinsically, or things she does not know at all but wishes to know. Combining Assyrian history with intimate stories, she explores themes of generational trauma, language, love, war, and home.

This thesis is a novel written in the first-person point of view with two characters, Jamila and Bella. The two protagonists are identical twins who got separated at birth. The novel addresses cultural effects and explores the role of upbringing in shaping the twins' identities. Jamila is raised by her father in Saudi Arabia while Bella is raised by her mother in the United States. For the last 95 years, Nella Larsen's Passing has been a topic of discussion within the literary and scholarly communities. First considered Larsen's folly, her second novella Passing had struggled to received a compliment from critics and was quickly lost to readers until her work was rediscovered in the early 1970s. My project, “Medieval and Modern: Celtic Mythology Through the Lens of Urban Fantasy” is the result of my interest and investment in Celtic mythology, and more specifically Irish mythology, most of our knowledge of which comes from records in the medieval period, made by Christian monks.
