Clouds of heat were sitting on the highway. There was no breeze to stir them perceptibly. The boy was hot. He wanted to keep his feet high, away from the burning sun fused in the pavement, but the motion of the bicycle pedals kept drawing them down monotonously. His hands on the rubber grips of the handlebars were sweaty and uncomfortable. Streaks down both legs of his salt and pepper wash trousers showed where he had tried to wipe away the stickiness.

Thomas Bailey Aldrich -- poet, novelist, traveler and editor -- was born in New Hampshire in 1836. His father's death in 1849 caused him to abandon his idea to attend college and move to New York to work with his uncle at age 16. Soon he became a constant contributor to newspapers and magazines and the intimate friend of many Bohemian poets, artists and writers. He was editor of various major newspapers and magazines in New York and Boston from the 1860s to the 1890s. During this time he was also a prolific, published writer of prose and verse. He …

This collection contains correspondence, manuscripts, photographs, and other materials relating to the life and work of Booth Tarkington. Booth Tarkington (1869-1946) was a writer from Indiana, well known for his novels of life in the midwest. Pulitzer Prizes were awarded to him for The Magnificent Ambersons and for Alice Adams. He attended Purdue University and Princeton, where he was a well-known literary and social figure. In later life he divided his time between Indiana and his estate, Seawood, in Kennebunkport, Maine, where he became friends with neighbor Kenneth Roberts.

The bulk of the collection consists of letters written by Jewett to various correspondents between 1879 and 1908. The collection also contains manuscript items of varying length, an Anecdote Book, clippings, published writings, and a few photographic prints. Sarah Orne Jewett (1849-1909) of South Berwick, Maine achieved note as an author and poet. The daughter of Dr. Theodore Jewett, she was educated at Berwick Academy, though her studies were frequently interrupted by illness. She never married and lived most of her life in her home …

Olive Higgins was born in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1882. She received a Bachelor in Literature degree from Smith College in 1904 and married Lewis Prouty in 1907. Her professional writing career began with encouragement from Albert Boyden, editor of American Magazine. He published When Elsie Came Home in 1909. Her two most famous novels, Stella Dallas and Now, Voyager, were published in 1922 and 1941. Both novels were adapted into movies. Prouty died in 1974.

The Papers consist of correspondence between Prouty and her husband and to various family members. Also included are manuscripts of her …

The thesis’ main question is: Has the reality of Condorcet’s Outlines of an Historical View of the Progress of the Human Mind been realized with humanity becoming perfect, as Condorcet indicates? In answering that question, my thesis contention will present the fictional encounter between Condorcet and me in which we debate Condorcet’s essay. The two of us will embark upon our world views of humanism and theism in a dramatic debate, presenting our perspectives and try to get to a resolution.
