Ofall the Irish writers ofthe nineteenth and twentieth centuries, George Moore (I 8S 2.-1933) is the one who was most embedded in French literature, painting and culture. Taking the strongly autobiographical Confessions ofa YoungMan as its main focal point, this chapter will examine Moore's love affair with France and the influence this exerted on his literary and artistic evolution. In Confessions, we read the extent ofMoore's attraction to Paris: '[ ... ] my thoughts reverted to France, which always haunted me; and which now possessed me with the sweet and magnetic influence ofhome.'l Moore clearly had a deep appreciation ofFrance …

The collection of short stories presented in this thesis seeks to form a counter-narrative to the stigmas associated with mental illness and trauma through the portrayal of protagonists suffering from or affected by such issues. Individuals influenced by mental illness and/or trauma are not "others" deserving ostracization but fellow human beings searching for hope in a world too often touched by sorrow. The first three stories within this thesis address protagonists directly impacted by mental illness. "Twin Magnolias" follows Maggie Briggins, an elderly woman battling both paranoia and Alzheimer's simultaneously in a search for reality. "Fabergé" explores Candy Friedman's depression …

This Must Be the Place is a collection of short stories that take place in Massachusetts, America. Each story exists as a subtle celebration of the ordinary moments of our lives that softly, and gradually, shape us over time. This testament to the every-day is characterized by detailed, tender depictions of brief conversations, picnics in parks, afternoon car rides, and trips to the grocery store with past lovers. Although the narrators and other orbiting characters in the stories are all different, they are bound together by an insatiable curiosity and fascination with the world and the human condition.

Absent the elements of effective writing, there has been a strong debate on whether or not other aspects of creative writing can be taught. The Grand Gallery is the story of a woman coming to terms with her identity and purpose in a small town in Kansas during the post-WWII boom. Astrid Grand is the heiress apparent to the family business, a gallery that has been at the center of the town’s operations from the time of its founding. The gallery displays a person’s “collection” at the time of their death. The townspeople collect everything from Victorian mourning jewelry to gum wrappers to objects found in trees. “In many ways,” as the novel’s opening chapter states, “the collections displayed at the gallery served as …
