Uprooting Medievalism: Ya And The Future Of Fantasy, Zoe Phillips

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

This thesis looks at the development of the young adult neo-medieval fantasy genre, measuring famous works from the Medieval period against works such as Tolkien's, to examine the impact of female protagonists and female authors on the genre and readers alike as neo-medieval fantasy continues to gain in popularity. Works examined include: Beowulf, Lanval, Le Roman de Silence, The Hobbit, Uprooted, and The Hero and the Crown.

The novel Lost Children Archive by Valeria Luiselli is an extremely referential novel, so much so that she creates an archival text of her own to support her story and the ideas she is trying to convey to readers about the border crisis. She crafts this archival text, Elegies for Lost Children by Ella Composanto, as a guide for both the narrators and readers so that they may understand the titular lost children and train themselves to see the book from a political narrative. The tradition of global disasters in literature is long-standing and David Mitchell contributes to that discussion. For him, the possibility of political, social, and environmental collapse is imminent based on patterns he traced throughout human history. One common thread Mitchell weaves throughout his works is the presence and the relevance of the apocalyptic. In his best known work, Cloud Atlas, Mitchell explores the cyclical trends of humanity across time and space, including the recurrence of predacity, cruelty, and systematic oppression. Gothic fiction is a genre of literature that tells a story of terror or suspense, and does this by employing dark scenery, eerie narrative devices, and atmospheres of gloom and mystery. It is a genre that has been ever-evolving since its first true emergence in the eighteenth century, and a prime example of this evolution is the modern Harry Potter book series by J. K. Colony Collapse is a novel about longing, loss, and the trauma we carry through the world, focusing on three characters: Daniel Amana, Logan Cassidy, and Malory Bennet as they navigate a hostile environment and attempt to find somewhere to belong, or a way to move on. It is a novel that seeks to answer the difficult question of what we do with a life unfulfilled. Daniel finds the answer in a movement to achieve immortality, Logan in the memories of his sister, and Malory in a challenging case to solve, but what happens when their paths come into conflict?
