This novel concerns a young Mormon who has fallen away from his religion and his family and juxtaposes his struggles with his faith, belief and heritage with those of a drifter deliberately distancing himself from a much darker past. The novel is also acutely interested in place and landscape as powerful originations of any contemporary sense of paradise and perdition we may hang onto.

The episodic setting of the novel, in conjunction with the narrator’s story, concurrently traces the National Basketball Association’s Utah Jazz’s 1996 play-off appearance. The novel uses this setting to examine the ways in which the basketball …

Our culture today faces a crisis with our young women. Between the ages of ten and fifteen, young women attempt to define their identities under societal pressure, and in the midst of sometimes overwhelmingly dysfunctional families. F̲r̲o̲n̲t̲i̲e̲r̲s̲ is a play that deals with these issues.

As Eve struggles to define herself as a free human being, separate from June, her emotionally needy mother, she also feels the inevitable entanglement of her identity with that of her family. The Long Road Home, a short prose epic, concerns the adventure and political coming-of-age of two sixteen-year-old boys, Dean and Blake. The boys hitchhike from their hometown of Pittsburgh to Greensboro, North Carolina in order to attend a march against the Ku Klux Klan. Dean and Blake are politically idealistic and naïve boys who learn a lot about the complexities of race relations in America on their adventure. The boys encounter a variety of people on their trip and in Greensboro, some of whom are hostile, friendly, indifferent, deceptive, generous, and downright strange.

This novel explores loyalty and responsibility to family versus the desire to choose a life of one's own. The story is told &om the first-person viewpoint of Annie Revels, who is born in 1900 on a barrier island off the coast of Virginia's Eastern Shore.

The story also explores the positive and negative aspects of a life spent in intimate isolation. Annie must battle the vagaries of nature, the prejudices of a male-dominated culture, and the tensions of a crippled family unit.
