“Lightness.” The word remains inescapable when attending to the mysterious work of Italo Calvino. It appears elusively in the texts of his novels and acts as a catalyst to many of his critical endeavors. Calvino addresses most explicitly this concept of lightness in his collection of lectures entitled Six Memos for the Next Millennium. Although these lectures were never delivered, they exist as a testament to the idea that “the boundless universe of literature” contains “new avenues to be explored, both very recent and very ancient, styles and forms that can change our image of the world” (Six Memos 7-8). …

The Time It Snowed in Puerto Rico is a coming-of-age novel chronicling two years in the life of Verdita, an eleven-year-old girl living in the Puerto Rico. The book begins in 1961, a time rich in Puerto Rican history as American influences become more prevalent in the lives of islanders. Everything is changing for Verdita, her body, her life, her community, and country. She struggles with who she is as a woman, a daughter, a Puerto Rican, and an adult. Verdita's search for identity mirrors the country's efforts to determine what it represents as a conquered nation and blended culture.

The five stories in this thesis explore how people comprehend identity, especially in the context of geographical region, religion, relationships, and genetics. Each story's suburban setting plays largely into the characters' crises of identity, even though the protagonists range in age from teen to middle-aged father of four. Through the action of each story, the five protagonists awaken to new facets of their own characters.

In "Love Your Neighbor," college student Julianne debates whether she can take revenge after a neighbor invades her privacy. Jacob Ritter, in "1-90," contemplates whether he understands his children now that they are grown and …
