Throughout my childhood and secondary education growing up in rural Indiana, I found that, in a town of less than 2,000 people, mental illness and teenage suicide were all too common. Upon researching the sad state of mental healthcare in rural America, I felt obliged to bring light in my Honors thesis to the overlooked and under-treated thoughts that plague the minds of adolescents experiencing depression, anxiety, and suicidal contemplation. In this fiction novella, I follow the life of Lincoln Phillips, a 14-year-old boy who lives with anxiety in an unchanging, inescapable town that stigmatizes mental illness. He experiences the …

My honors project is a 9,600-word collection of two short stories. The first story, Loose Light, is a character-driven narrative about an astronomer who has spent his life chasing an outer space phenomenon he saw as a graduate student and what he does when he rediscovers the phenomenon. The second story, Lost Light, is another character-driven narrative about a young man who, after an automobile accident, begins losing his memories. Both stories examine the perspective of the lost, the obsessed, the isolated, and the angry. In the accompanying self-analysis, I explore how my time as a reporter for The University …

Poetry is often perceived as an unfamiliar form of expression. With misconceptions of poetry being as something driven by pure epiphany, poetry is lost amongst many individuals. This misconception is challenged throughout this collection and encourages readers to embrace vulnerability through the speaker’s passage to self acceptance. In my piece, “For the Big Horns,” vulnerability is encompassed when the speaker says that “The mountain told me that we are all animals without blueprints. That people are no longer people without fear, and that fear is a root.” These lines encapsulate the speaker’s persistence to show readers an experience of humanness, …

Communication can be hard enough when you’re speaking in your native tongue, but throw in a second language and something’s sure to get lost in translation. In this creative nonfiction piece, I trace my real-life journey from tongue-tied homebody to bilingual voyageuse over the stepping stones of four chapters, with each chapter linked by the themes of language and communication. In the first half of the project, a unique job offer brings love, friendship, and plenty of misunderstanding into my humdrum life, and inspires me to pick up a language that broadens my personal and academic horizons. En esta novela una serie de personajes van en busca de las huellas de ese viaje y de la utopÃa perdida de un paÃs condenado a una verdad a medias. Asimismo, los personajes van en busca de la identidad perdida en un viaje que mezcla naturaleza, memoria e historia. Hechos reales mezclados con hechos ficticios. Una novela en constante construcción cuyos autores son los mismos protagonistas.

The Soldier's Journal is a military thriller. Camila Mason is one of the first women to qualify as a green beret in the U.S. Army. Here first mission is to deploy to Afghanistan where she faces the memory of her father, a green beret killed thirteen years earlier by an IED. Soon, she begins to understand the environment surrounding her, filled with sexism, ineptitude, and enemies, both foreign and domestic.

In this thesis, I propose three parallel projects. The first is an introductory exploration of the narrative conventions that have become, over time, established tropes in Fantasy Fiction as a brief discussion of my conscious strategy to reject the normative structures set in modern fantasy literature in my own fiction project “Era of Black.” Second is an excerpt from my novel-in-progress, in which I deploy specific stylistic and narrative gestures that mark my effort to move beyond the received “rules” of the Fantasy mode. Counter Clockwise Culture Shock is a memoir focused the narrator's return to his hometown, a place he barely escaped: drug addiction, incarceration, bad relationships, alienation, an Oedipal mother, and suicidal threats. It is reflection on both culture and self, after I gained an outside perspective from Japan. The narrator is forced to relive nihilism and monotony, and face the troubles of his younger years. It describes the difficult journey of today's youth, in an evermore technologically dynamic world - with few role models able to plot a course through. Grammar Jam: Adding A Creative Editing Tactic, David Gillespie

The author argues reading, hearing, and then composing musical lyrics involving grammatical concerns can help college writing students to edit more effectively for a song's grammar topic. Explaining that the songs need to offer specific advice, such as how to both spot and correct the grammatical problem, the writer offers lyrical examples and provides scholarly evidence for this approach. The essay explains what Grammar Jam is, why music can work, and how to use the tactic in the classroom.
