Mortality In The 21st Century: A Cycle Of Short Stories On Death And The Afterlife, Rose A. Rucoba Apr 2019

Mortality In The 21st Century: A Cycle Of Short Stories On Death And The Afterlife, Rose A. Rucoba

Honors Theses

Every culture and religion around the world has different beliefs and theories about why humans die and whether or not there is something more beyond death. Authors such as Elizabeth Evans, Flannery O’Connor, and Stephanie Vaughn are three modern-day, impactful writers who have explored the themes of death and the afterlife in their own works. In response to these writers, I have completed a collection of four short stories and one novella that focuses on the themes of death and the afterlife. The stories are separate from each other and are told from different points of view, following a variety …

Positionality Matters: School Choice Decisions Based On Ethnographic Accounts Of African American Parents, Dr. Stacy L. Thomas Apr 2019

Positionality Matters: School Choice Decisions Based On Ethnographic Accounts Of African American Parents, Dr. Stacy L. Thomas

Dissertations

This research delves into experiences with reasoning and selected criteria for choosing the right school for their children. Beginning with a series of vignettes that assist with recognition of parental empowerment, this research archives acknowledgement of their own positionality when it comes to making life changing decisions. As selected parents of African American children grapple with the strategic balance and possibilities of educational outlets, family and finances, they offer ethnographic accounts of their successes and failures with school choice. Individual accounts of parental school choice decisions posing as data ascertained from interviews provided research that explored the critical frequencies and …

Wolves Are Wild: A Collection Of Narratives About Rescued Wolves And Wolfdogs, Molly G. Vorhaus Apr 2019

Wolves Are Wild: A Collection Of Narratives About Rescued Wolves And Wolfdogs, Molly G. Vorhaus

Student Publications

Breeders across the country are creating wolfdogs by breeding dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) with wolves (Canis lupus) for a large profit. This project is a response to the growing exotic pet trade of wolves and wolfdogs. Through this project, I hope to bring awareness to the issues associated with these animals being raised in captivity. Recent research has shown that raising a wolf or wolfdog in captivity can lead to various negative psychological and physical effects on the animal, and can cause potential problems for humans as well. This practice is embedded in the concept of humans wanting to own …

Deliberate Practice, Writing Self-Efficacy, And Self-Regulation Among Internet Novelists In China: A Phenomenological Approach, Shuangshuang Cai Apr 2019

Deliberate Practice, Writing Self-Efficacy, And Self-Regulation Among Internet Novelists In China: A Phenomenological Approach, Shuangshuang Cai

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The focus of this study was the role of deliberate practice, writing self-efficacy and self-regulation in the lived experiences of Chinese internet literature novelists. This qualitative, phenomenological study presented the shared perceptions of this phenomenon drawn from interviews of Chinese internet novelists. The psychological aspects of these novelists were previously unexplored and this study helps to address the gap in the literature. The phenomenological method captured the experiences of the Chinese internet novelists and added this rich detail to the existing research literature.

Semi-structured interviews were conducted with fourteen Chinese internet novelists, and related documents from other Chinese internet novelists’ …

Proof Positive, Lalini Shanela Ranaraja Apr 2019

Proof Positive, Lalini Shanela Ranaraja

Vázquez-Valarezo Poetry Award

This poem is an exploration of the aftermath of sexual assault and the myriad factors which determine how women, especially women of colour and Asian women, cope with that aftermath. I am particularly concerned with how the testimony and literature of Asian women can prompt other Asian women to unravel their own stories by reflecting these stories back to them and giving them a medium through which to have this confrontation. With this piece I attempt to communicate that the act of confronting and sharing trauma is a continuous and absolutely vital process for survivors of sexual assault.

Too Cool, Lillian Margaret Cary Apr 2019

Too Cool, Lillian Margaret Cary

Stonecoast MFA Theses and Capstones

Too Cool is a collection of short stories and essays concerning a young woman’s experiences with relationships, and how they help shape the world around her. The body, foregrounded as metaphor, is threaded throughout each story and essay in the collection in the hopes that all readers will relate to the sometimes un-relatable. Both in fiction and non-fiction, these pieces explore heartbreak, friendship and the human need for connection. The stories and essays are written in a minimalist style to emphasize that what is written is just as important as the information that has been left out, and their themes …

The Eternal Waters, Heather Meeks Apr 2019

The Eternal Waters, Heather Meeks

Stonecoast MFA Theses and Capstones

This creative thesis is from the first book of a planned trilogy. It is the beginning third of a young adult, dark fantasy novel about a secondary, drowning world. Merfolk and humans have been at conflict for centuries over territory and resources. When an angry ocean goddess wakes after a thousand years of slumber, both societies are threatened. The races are forced to work together to solve their environmental and fantastical perils.

We see the island and water worlds though an alternating point of view. The two male point of view characters, one human and the other merfolk, become attracted …

Time Away, Loren Hart Francis Apr 2019

Time Away, Loren Hart Francis

Stonecoast MFA Theses and Capstones

Loren Francis planted himself squarely into his life in 2008, and looked around from there, trying to remember what the view was like from then: a time of building, music, creativity and expansiveness followed by an accident, panic attacks, and the deep rout of alcohol and drug addiction. He picks up the threads, tugging on them and letting them take him where they would back through his family tree to his Irish farmer grandparents on his mother’s side, and his British and Lebanese grandparents on his father’s. Music, addiction, family and entrepreneurism all play a salient part in his life …

Motus Animi Continuus, Mark Anthony Cayanan Apr 2019

Motus Animi Continuus, Mark Anthony Cayanan

English Faculty Publications

The poem part of a manuscript I'm currently working on, which is my attempt to project a mode of disclosure, even as the method of composition, involving the liberal extraction and combination of passages from several urtexts, works against this seeming tonality. The poem loosely channels the consciousness of Gustav von Aschenbach. Among the intertexts I've used are Death in Venice by Thomas Mann, translated by Stanley Appelbaum.

When A Stone Is Not A Stone: Memories Of Clerical Abuse, Charles V. Sords Apr 2019

When A Stone Is Not A Stone: Memories Of Clerical Abuse, Charles V. Sords

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

From the fourth to the sixth grades, Charles V. Sords suffered traumatic sexual abuse by Catholic clergy. He suppressed these memories, yet the pain of what happened impacted every aspect of his life. As an adult, several strong, sensory experiences brought the truth of his childhood into focus. He confronted the Church—and the system that protected clerical criminals. This memoir is an account of childhood sexual abuse, the particularly shameful nature of being raped by priests, and how the Catholic Church’s method of handling this and similarly horrifying revelations has re-traumatized survivors.

Beyond The Limits Of Sight, Catherine Ntube

Theses and Dissertations

Beyond the Limits of Sight is a collection of poems exploring black diasporic identity through and beyond the silences that come to surround violence. In this experimental collection, black bars representing selective silence appear throughout the work, in protest of the compulsory release of licensing rights to the university and its corporate partners as a degree requirement, and in insistence that the poet be able to decide on what terms and via which platforms their voice enters the public sphere.

Pangaea, Nishat Manzoor Ahmed Apr 2019

Pangaea, Nishat Manzoor Ahmed

English Theses & Dissertations

Pangaea is a collection of poems that revolve around themes of race, culture, identity, religion, faith, mental illness, death, and love. The themes in Pangaea aim to pinpoint the where all these ideas intersect in the body and the heart, each theme a continent on its own right coming together to make the overall landmass of human existence. In Pangaea, I am asking to find the root of urgency that drives one to love, to hate, to feel. This thesis is an attempt at unearthing that root.

This is a collection of linked short stories that take place in or in relation to the town of Henning, Michigan.
