Gothic fiction is a genre of literature that tells a story of terror or suspense, and does this by employing dark scenery, eerie narrative devices, and atmospheres of gloom and mystery. It is a genre that has been ever-evolving since its first true emergence in the eighteenth century, and a prime example of this evolution is the modern Harry Potter book series by J. K. Rowling which employs gothic elements into its otherwise predominantly fantasy-fiction genre. Colony Collapse is a novel about longing, loss, and the trauma we carry through the world, focusing on three characters: Daniel Amana, Logan Cassidy, and Malory Bennet as they navigate a hostile environment and attempt to find somewhere to belong, or a way to move on. It is a novel that seeks to answer the difficult question of what we do with a life unfulfilled. Daniel finds the answer in a movement to achieve immortality, Logan in the memories of his sister, and Malory in a challenging case to solve, but what happens when their paths come into conflict?

"CAPABLE” is a full-length manuscript of poetry. The speaker of the manuscript interrogates her family’s past, specifically the past of her father. The speaker details how her grandmother abandoned her father as a young boy. This story of abandonment, and its aftermath, is expressed through portraits of the speaker’s family members. The most prevalent theme—freedom to choose one’s own path despite familial obligations—is seen through the grandmother’s leaving and the speaker’s own sexual experiences. Both the grandmother and speaker make decisions that alienate them from their families. Their experiences are juxtaposed in a way that presents the grandmother as a …

To illuminate our personal experiences during this time of sheltering-in, we will continue our investigation of sonnets as performance texts by writing and acting in our own creations. Held by the structure of the verse, we will create and perform sonnets that communicate our thoughts and feelings about life, loss, survival, resilience, and love during these unprecedented times. We will continue to lend our voices to the verse with specific concentration on embodiment, clarity, personal connection, and the merging of the emotional and intellectual through-line. This collaborative assignment has two parts: a creative writing component, and a skilled performance component.

Overgrown is a collection of short stories stemming from nontangible anxieties, such as death, violence against women, and the queer search for acceptance. Each of the three pieces, including Thoughts of a Downed Oak Tree, Wrong, and For the Living, touches upon how individuals experience these anxieties and how they face them.
