Within my studio practice I have been examining the aesthetics of leisure spaces, the implications of good and bad taste, and what it means to live one’s best life. Considering the history of design motifs and the influence of color upon the human psyche, my thesis exhibition of abstract paintings contains references to patterns, design movements, and modes of artifice that have historically been seen as brazen and tacky. MOTIVATION In Richmond, there are 1.21 times as many African Americans as any other ethnic group. Yet 63.4% of African Americans live in poverty (Richmond, VA). African Americans face greater exposure to stress due to low socioeconomic status and poverty. In these communities, “discrimination and deprivation undermine individuals’ ability to accumulate the social and material resources to mitigate the effects of stress” (Brondolo, 2018). In this city’s African American community, where stress levels are high and consequential health concerns are prevalent, dance can be a remedy for managing stress and improving health (Hanna, 2006).

MOTIVATION: The value of family mealtime has been well documented by decades of academic research. Children from families, (regardless of race, class or income), that routinely sit down to a meal together, suffer less depression, obesity and substance abuse. They also stay healthier and do better in school (Benefits 2018). There are nutrition, health, social, and mental benefits to eating with others. Walter Gropius, Mies van der Rohe and Marcel Breuer: Designing for America examines interior and furniture projects by the three European modern designer after emigrating to the U.S. in 1938. Many of these projects are not very well known, or are commonly discussed solely in terms of architecture, yet the interiors in fact reveal interesting and significant developments in Gropius, Mies and Breuer's work. The exhibition highlights the evolution of their designs, as well as the extent to which they were affected by American tendencies and innovations and their lasting impact.

Venus Fly Trap Garden Light, Raven Lovette

Interior Design

The design will be a modern twist on the solar power garden light. The solar powered light will mimic that of a Venus Fly Trap. The light will remain closed during the daylight, while the solar panels are powered up, and as night falls the fly trap will open allowing light to shine through. The light fixture will be made of sheet metal that can sustain outdoor conditions. The flexible light stand will allow for adjusting the fixture to direct the light in any desired direction.

The concept for this lighting fixture came from the curved and almost ridged edge look of an incoming intense storm cloud. The organic lines create an interesting pattern in the sky, which when turned into a lighting piece, would make for a cool shadowed  effect and pattern in the room. This light would be used for a mood lighting effect to help with relaxation, but also be something of interesting and thought provoking to view both as the fixture itself and with the lights on.
