Pot Calling The Kettle Black, Kevin Mccoy, Special Collections, Fleet Library

Artists' Books

1 volume, 28 unnumbered pages. Black people in America have been taxonomized as "savages" or "lazy" and dehumanized by mainstream media which are derivatives of early scientific racism. The titling of this publication, Pot Calling the Kettle Black, is an idiom used in the Black household to underscore blatant hypocrisy. This publication offers critical observation of the use of blackface and its variations found deeply embedded in cartoons, pop culture, the fashion industry, and beyond.-- Work / Play.

Artists' Books

106, 478, 430, xxxii pages : illustrations (some color) ; 25 cm. 'The A to Z of Conflict' is a tri-lingual artists' book by ten contemporary artists. It imagines what a commonplace children's ABC book would look like if all the entries were chosen in relation to words about conflict, and words born out of conflict. The project uses English, Sinhala, and Tamil, the three languages spoken in Sri Lanka, a country torn apart by a brutal civil war. From afar the compendium of entries testifies to the way language defines us linguistically, socially, and politically. Up close it reveals …

The In-Betweens Of Life, Laura Alison Chatham Jan 2019

The In-Betweens Of Life, Laura Alison Chatham

Honors Theses

Have you ever walked through someplace too many times to count, and then one day it feels entirely new? The feeling of paying attention to an insignificant place for the first time interests me. We are constantly surrounded by buildings and trees and sidewalks and light poles, and don’t often take the time to look at them. In this series of paintings, I am taking the time to look at the overlooked. With The In-Betweens of Life, I am very particular about leaving my hand in each mark. Because the paintings are so small, the viewer is invited close to …

Ceramic Architectural Models From The Madaba Plains Region: A Selected Art Historical Analysis, Stefanie P. Elkins Jan 2019

Ceramic Architectural Models From The Madaba Plains Region: A Selected Art Historical Analysis, Stefanie P. Elkins

Dissertations

Problem

Architectural models can be described as small, ceramic, house-shaped structures that come in an often bewildering array of shapes and sizes. They appear all over the ancient Near East, and although evidence shows that they were created as early as the Neolithic period, they seem to have peaked in popularity and proliferation during the Iron Age. A few studies and several typologies have been offered over the years, but none have addressed iconography or artistic motifs as well as shape. Furthermore, no in-depth typology of architectural models within the country of Jordan has been offered. This dissertation explores the …

Topics include publishing, virtual reality, children's books, diversity and representation, high tuition, and the lesser respect and pay that many illustrators experience. The article also relates the history of American illustration 1959-2019 in the form of a tongue-in-cheek boardgame The Illustration Game, in which players advance through the years, encountering typical events in the industry. The game-board is scattered with historical funny-in-hindsight quotes of well-known illustrators, designers and other professionals, which illuminate …
