Mrs. Walter Stewart By Charles Willson Peale, Tessa Schroll Jan 2019

Mrs. Walter Stewart By Charles Willson Peale, Tessa Schroll

Writing Across the Curriculum

As I walked through the Yale Art Gallery in New Haven, I was struck by this painting by Charles Willson Peale. Among all the portraits in the grand room of American paintings, this one in particular has so much going on; from the background and setting to just the few small things in Deborah McClenachan’s hands there was clearly a lot that the artist wanted to portray about this eighteen-year old girl.

Inspirations evolve into pattern concepts that inform message and intention. The intended message then informs motif, color, density, composition, line, repetition, hierarchy, and texture. Drawing from history, designers assess the role of pattern within the built environment and its connection to architecture and building occupants. Traditional handcrafts have evolved and are now used in contemporary processes while new digital crafts have emerged as pattern-making tools. The patterns developed through the Pattern Project were produced to scale on paper …

Honors Journal 2019, University Of Maine At Farmington

Honors Journal

The work presented here from our five contributors addresses the theme of the unknown, which mirrors the process of starting a journal from scratch. In this edition, reader, you will see that there is uncertainty in what lies in a relationship once financial struggles cause strain, and there is the struggle to keep knowledge alive when other forms of it have been forced onto populations. There are questions in how we cope and how we heal; there are questions regarding if we survive, or if we burn. We are very fortunate to have had the opportunity to feature the work …

Permissive Certificates: Collectors Of Art As Collectors Of Permissions, Peter J. Karol Jan 2019

Permissive Certificates: Collectors Of Art As Collectors Of Permissions, Peter J. Karol

Law Faculty Scholarship

Artists have been dramatically reshaping the fine art certificate of authenticity since the 1960s. Where traditional certificates merely certified extant objects as authentic works of a named artist, newer instruments purported both to authorize the creation of unbuilt artworks and instruct buyers how to manifest and install them. Such “Permissive Certificates” have fascinated contemporary art historians ever since. Prior scholarship has shown how such documents, essentially blueprints for art creation, force us to confront fundamental ontological questions on the nature of art, the relationship between artist, collector and viewer, and the influence of money and acquisitiveness on art generation. But …
