The Empathic Relation Of Observer To Image In Fifteenth Century Northern Art, Lloyd William Benjamin Iii

Department of Art and Design

ABSTRACT LLOYD WILLIAM BENJAMIN III. The Empathic Relation of Observer to Image in Fifteenth Century Northern Art (Under the direction of' JOHN M. SCHNORRENBERG.) The observer's relation to religious art in the fifteenth century has received only minor attention in recent studies of Northern painting. Scholars have overlooked the function of naturalistic images and have concentrated upon problems of attribution, chronology. and iconogrophy. These studies, made without reference to the origin~ l purpose and setting of Flemish art, show the persistence of the I'art pour I'art attitude. The object of this study is to reintegrate the works into their original …

The Art Institute Of Boston Course Catalog (1973), The Art Institute Of Boston

Art Institute of Boston (AIB) Course Catalogs

The Art Institute of Boston maintains, and always has maintained throughout the course of its long history, that the artist holds a unique position of responsibility in his society. Because the weight of his contribution is so widely felt in this age of the expanded media, the artist is expected to be not only innovator, but also arbitrator. The decisions which affect his life and his work influence a wide body of people who look to him for illumination.

Art cannot be taught as a development of certain visual talents separate from a larger awareness of life. The Art Institute …

An Exploration In The Use Of Plastics And Ceramics For The Creation Of Combined Media Sculptures: An Abstract Of A Thesis, Peter J. Deneen Jan 1973

An Exploration In The Use Of Plastics And Ceramics For The Creation Of Combined Media Sculptures: An Abstract Of A Thesis, Peter J. Deneen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis is a result of the creation of sculptures combining the media of clay and polyester resin. The malleable and earthly qualities of clay, juxtaposed with the controlled and polished forms of the cast plastic was my major interest. Light reflecting and refracting through the plastic is complemented by the light-absorbing qualities of fired, unglazed clay.

A Study In Visual Emotional Response To Color Changes On Simplified Flat Forms, Frances Farmer Jan 1973

A Study In Visual Emotional Response To Color Changes On Simplified Flat Forms, Frances Farmer

All Master's Theses

Research has proven that the impact of two-dimensional painting and drawing occurs in the first tenth of a second on viewing. All viewing thereafter is investigative. Therefore it is of utmost important that the major response be in this period. This interest in the firm, momentary presence of visual impact has precedence in Milton Avery's work as related by Hilton Kramer in his text on Milton Avery. To make the use of color as the basic mainspring of my work seemed to be the most effective way of gaining this time response. With this in mind I intended to produce …

The Face As An Inspiration In Drawing, Linda Lee Stevens Jan 1973

The Face As An Inspiration In Drawing, Linda Lee Stevens

All Master's Theses

My primary concern in drawing is the human element. The face has been the inspiration which enabled me to convey this element. These faces (contrived from photographic media) became individuals with the ability to transmit emotions (which are triggered by their human forces). This power of the face has inspired the utilization of spatial relationships and imagery which becomes the total drawing. The magical quality in drawing is similar to the mystical quality of the face - they both provide a spiritual challenge.
