Cele Houre Memes: An Eccentric English Psalter-Hours In The Huntington Library, Alexa Sand Jun 2012

Cele Houre Memes: An Eccentric English Psalter-Hours In The Huntington Library, Alexa Sand

Art and Design Faculty Publications

The Ellesmere Psalter-Hours (EL 9 H17) consists of two distinct but related manuscripts, an earlier Psalter and a later partial Book of Hours written and illuminated in England between about 1310 and 1325. Alexa Sand shows what this unusual book reveals about lay devotion as an expression of class ambition and social networking among the gentry of northwestern England in this period of internecine strife and political turmoil. The manuscript’s material structure and its iconographic, textual, and heraldic contents reflect its emulation not only of similar prayer books created for laywomen belonging to the gentry class but also of specific …

Convergence, Megan R. Mitchell May 2012

Convergence, Megan R. Mitchell

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Fences, doors and windows indicate a point of intersection between inside and outside, public and private. These porous boundaries provide enclosure while also allowing access to an outside world. I am drawn to these divisions in space both as aesthetic and metaphorical objects. They are the point of departure for an exploration of the intersection between real and imagined worlds.

I am fascinated by the ways that my brain filters and interprets the outside world, which then takes root in dreams and the imagination. Certain structures and landscapes hold a specific symbolic power; while completely inanimate, they seem to mirror …

Places, Kellyn Bailey May 2012

Places, Kellyn Bailey

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

There is an certain discomfort that accompanies stepping outside the known into the unfamiliar. Yet in my life, the endeavors I have been the most uncertain about have often turned out to be the most rewarding to me. This is especially true in the case of traveling. My first major experience away from home came with an opportunity to participate in a month-long study abroad in Switzerland. My uneasiness about the prospect of spending an extended period of time thousands of miles away from home almost kept me from going. In my life, I can identify a small handful of …

Relative Existence, Andrew S. Klc May 2012

Relative Existence, Andrew S. Klc

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The imagination is the tool of creation. Before something can exist physically, it must first be envisioned mentally, as an idea. Fantasy morphs into a reality and I am transported to a realm where I can walk along canyon floors and grapple peaks. I am forging these worlds…my primordial creation.

Parallaxis, Carl Ray Wilson May 2012

Parallaxis, Carl Ray Wilson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Parallaxis first began with an observation in my hometown. At nighttime, like a moth attracted to a flame, I would notice empty buildings that were closed or never opened for various reasons and relate them to my own inner vacancy. Seeing the lights on in these empty places motivated my curiosity and kept me studiously coming back.

I continued my exploration of empty buildings in Utah. Taking note of how capturing reflections transformed my images from documentary photography to internal forms of expression. It was at this time that reflections became the driving force within my image making. I became …

Experience Design, Alexandra Lee Davis Apr 2012

Experience Design, Alexandra Lee Davis

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

This undergraduate research project aims to explore the question: “What is Experience Design(XD)?” and “How can Experience Design be executed in a magazine, both print and online versions?” My methods included extensive research on the history of XD, ethnography of typical magazine users, the study of magazine layout and design principles (both in print and online form) and finally, the execution of an XD-minded print and online digital-comp version of a fashion/lifestyle magazine. I used the Adobe Creative Suite to compile my research into tangible proof of the theory of XD in action. My results proved to be difficult to …

Effective Poster Design, Kaylee S. White Apr 2012

Effective Poster Design, Kaylee S. White

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

It is claimed that a poster has about three seconds to catch the attention of a passer-by. The success of that poster teeters on those few seconds. If it fails to attract attention, then it is ineffective. However, if it catches the interest of its viewer, then half of the battle is won. Having caught attention, the poster must next deliver a swift, effective, convincing message, which then leads the viewer to a desired thought or action. Quite an ambitious to-do list for one poster, right? Quickly arrest the attention of the viewer, deliver a swift clear message, effectively accomplish …

Technological Evolution And Its Effects On Graphic Design And Textbook Design, Danielle Renae Allen Apr 2012

Technological Evolution And Its Effects On Graphic Design And Textbook Design, Danielle Renae Allen

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Technological Evolution and its Effects on Graphic Design and Textbook Design Although fundamental principles of art and design have been around for thousands of years, the development of new technology has greatly altered how designers must use these foundations. This paper investigates how this complex history has changed graphic design practices and specifically the design of textbooks. It also discusses technology’s huge role in changing the way design fundamentals are taught and practiced and how this affects where the profession is headed. Through researching the history of graphic design and then examining three editions of the textbook, Design Basics by …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

This evidence-based research explains and provides interior design strategies for redesign and future design to meet the needs of MS patients. The project entails an analysis of MS patient needs, an assessment of interior design implementations in similar medical fields (with patients who have similar symptoms to those with MS), and the creation of information materials containing recommended design practices for distribution. The materials will include details on lay-outs, upholstery, space planning, suggested equipment, color schemes, and recommended practices to be applied to current or future facilities that treat MS patients. These materials provide previously unexplored and much needed research …

From Form To Form, Pia Bergholtz May 2011

From Form To Form, Pia Bergholtz

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

My MFA thesis project is an exploration of the evolving nature of patterns, and how set shapes and lines can take on new form through position, scale, repetition and color. I have designed four Scandinavian style patterns with imagery and colors drawn from my roots and childhood in Sweden. With the inspiration and direction of a variety of different cultural imagery and form, I then explored how to make new patterns from each of these, ending up with over 100 different patterns and variations from the original four. The exhibit represents the wide range of transformation that can be achieved, …

Starting with "Impersonations: Scott Greiger" in 2007, then "Bobby Ross: Drawings" in 2010, the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art began a tradition of presenting ideas and objects that stimulate discussion, challenge the audience, encourage open-mindedness and expand perspectives.

Vindictive Virgins: Animate Images And Theories Of Art In Some Thirteenth-Century Miracle Stories, Alexa Sand Mar 2010

Vindictive Virgins: Animate Images And Theories Of Art In Some Thirteenth-Century Miracle Stories, Alexa Sand

Art and Design Faculty Publications

It has been persuasively argued that before the fifteenth century the category of art as a theorized entity did not exist; this was a period for which we can write a history of the image, but not a history of art. Notably, Hans Belting, Likeness and Presence: A History of the Image before the Era of Art, trans. Edmund Jephcott (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1996).View all notesCareful scrutiny of both intellectual and popular discourse on images, east and west, has resulted in the more cautious view that medieval people, while experiencing what we now call …

Los Angeles portrait painter John Sonsini's gorgeous bakgrounds are lyrical, atmospheric abstrations that add a surprising tenderness to the portraits of Hispanic men whose half-formed shadows correspond to their near invisibility to most LA passersby.

Sustainable Materials In High-End Residential Interior Design, Sarah Platt May 2007

Sustainable Materials In High-End Residential Interior Design, Sarah Platt

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Our most contemporary architecture is the biggest culprit contributing to global warming. We see the results globally, from one corner to the other affecting everything in between: Phillipine forests are clear-cut for plywood used to construct Japanese offices; homes in Southern California are framed with old-growth lumber from Washington and powered by burning coal strip-mined from Navajo sacred lands in Arizona. Point being, the destructive power of poor design isn't limited to the end-user, if affects everyone. Additionally, not only are these buildings forever altering the landscape they are placed upon and everywhere their resources were pulled from, but everything …

Design Response To Humanitarian Crisis: An Analysis Of Low-Income Labor Camps In Doha, Qatar In The Context Of A Student Charrette, Holly Murdock May 2007

Design Response To Humanitarian Crisis: An Analysis Of Low-Income Labor Camps In Doha, Qatar In The Context Of A Student Charrette, Holly Murdock

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

"Imagine a future where design can alter the quality of life." So began the instructions for "Charrette: A 48 hour Design Challenge" hosted by Virginia Commonwealth University's School of the Arts in Qatar. ("Charrette," 2007.) Combining sustainable design solutions with issues of human rights, an experiment in design education was created to challenge students to improve the quality of life for some of the world's most disadvantaged workers.

A Small Door: Recognizing Ruth In The Psalter-Hours ‘Of Yolande Of Soissons’, Alexa Sand Mar 2007

A Small Door: Recognizing Ruth In The Psalter-Hours ‘Of Yolande Of Soissons’, Alexa Sand

Art and Design Faculty Publications

Long the subject of iconographic speculation, the miniature that currently opens the luxurious late-thirteenth-century Psalter-Hours "of Yolande of Soissons" (New York, Pierpont Morgan Library, M.729) can now be securely identified as a depiction of the opening scene of the book of Ruth. The identification rests on an iconographic peculiarity shared with two roughly contemporary vernacular Bibles, a connection that in itself gives some sense of the textual and pictorial environment in which the "Yolande" manuscript was conceived. The choice of this extremely rare subject for a pictorial preface to a devotional book created for an aristocratic laywoman indicates the interpenetration …

Innovation & Inspiration Tunnel, Bridget Noel Bybee May 2006

Innovation & Inspiration Tunnel, Bridget Noel Bybee

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

I intend to create one large scale permanent work for Utah State University as fulfillment for the senior thesis of my Honors degree. The site that has been approved for this project is the tunnel under HWY 89 connecting the student B parking lot to the eastern most end of campus where the art and engineering departments are located. This high traffic area is ugly, uninviting, and currently in need of repair. The site is perfect in its nature as a tunnel that leads towards the new School of the Arts and, thus it is an exquisite site for a …

Heading Out, Bridget Noel Short May 2005

Heading Out, Bridget Noel Short

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

I consider myself a conceptual artist. My paintings and sculptures revolve around the contours of time - its movement, construction, and meaning. Awestruck by the fleeting feel of disaster and beauty my work maintains a sexy feel that never embodies rigidity, but rather emulates feminine elements. Intrigued by the same psychoanalysis that has grasped the attention of so many artists since the 20th century it is through symbolism and metaphors that my ideas are reached. Seeking the deeper meaning in things my paintings and sculptures try to express the aggregate of what I view as "time." The components and processes …

Design Sales And Marketing - An Investigational Study, Katrina Jeanne Kuddes Dec 2004

Design Sales And Marketing - An Investigational Study, Katrina Jeanne Kuddes

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Dating back to the ancient Mesopotamian era, design has been a fundamental instigator of creations and inventions, leading us to the world we have today. Everything we have is the result of design: communities, architecture, mechanics, plumbing, furniture, clothing, etc. Design starts, often quietly, in the mind of an individual as an idea; but the idea begins to breathe when committed to paper or tangibly created.

Art Theory & Design Process, Bryce W. Bushman May 2004

Art Theory & Design Process, Bryce W. Bushman

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Art is not an object; it is a process that has three components; the individual, the experience, and the expression. The individual is the person creating art and includes all of their unique complexities, recognizing that people are dynamic. The experience includes everything that goes on within and around the individual that results in, and links them to, the expression. The expression is the result of the individual's experience, a manifestation or product, which may be tactile and physical or abstract and psychological, usually both. Only one of the three components need be unique for art to occur. Design process …

Beauty, Truth, And Fact : Photography In 1930s America, Nora Eccles Harrison Museum Of Art

Exhibit Catalogues

Contemporary theory and criticism of photography has generally taken the form of a face-off between formalism and contextualism. The first postion contends that what is required to understand a photograph is prmarily a close examination of its formal structure, the ability to connect it to other art forms, and perhpas some knowledge of the artist's biography and intentions. The second position holds that photographs have no meaning outside of the scoial and political context of their making. For the most part, these positions have been hardened and adversarial.
