Exploring The Interplay Between Emotions And Interaction, Sus Lundgren Aug 2009

Exploring The Interplay Between Emotions And Interaction, Sus Lundgren

Nordes Conference Series

There seems to be a Catch-22 involved in designing interaction; it’s very hard to do it without designing an artifact too. How can we keep our main focus away from purpose, function, form and material in order to put interaction first? This article presents two design exercises that in combination highlight how emotions and expressions affect each other in design, an how interaction in turn, can be used to strengthen or express an emotion.

Gender Bending Through Design: An Account Of A Student Project On Gender, Lena Hansson, Marcus Jahnke Aug 2009

Gender Bending Through Design: An Account Of A Student Project On Gender, Lena Hansson, Marcus Jahnke

Nordes Conference Series

This article deals with an explorative student project which was conducted as part of a consumer research project on gender in design. In the project master students in design explored and reflected on gender issues through practice, and the resulting objects were assembled into a public exhibition. Departing from gender theory we describe and reflect on the experiences of the students and the reactions to the objects and the exhibition.

Symbiots: Conceptual Interventions Into Urban Energy Systems, Jenny Bergström, Ramia Mazé, Johan Redström, Anna Vallgårda Aug 2009

Symbiots: Conceptual Interventions Into Urban Energy Systems, Jenny Bergström, Ramia Mazé, Johan Redström, Anna Vallgårda

Nordes Conference Series

Symbiots set out to examine values such as ease-of-use, comfort, and rationality assumed within conventions of ‘good design’, in order to expose issues related to energy consumption and current human- (versus eco-) centered design paradigms. Exploring re-interpretations of graphical patterns, architectural configura- tions and electrical infrastructure typical in Swedish cities, Symbiots takes the form of a photo series in the genre of contemporary hy- per-real art photography. Painting a vivid pic- ture of alternatives to current local priorities around energy consumption, the three design concepts depicted are strangely familiar, al- ternatively humorous and sinister.

Peeling Apples: Prototyping Design Experiments As Research, Tuuli Mattelmäki, Ben Matthews Aug 2009

Peeling Apples: Prototyping Design Experiments As Research, Tuuli Mattelmäki, Ben Matthews

Nordes Conference Series

Design research often includes design experiments. But the discourse generated by the idea of ‘research through design’ has not always been a helpful starting point for novice design researchers who intend to incorporate design as a component of their research inquiries. In this article we make two contributions. Firstly, we present a short analysis of six design research exemplars that involve design as a constituent part of the research. We do this in an effort to demonstrate that there is a multitude of ways that design can, and has, formed the basis for research contributions. Following from that observation, we …

Understanding Affective Engagement As A Resource In Interaction Design, Jonas Fritsch Aug 2009

Understanding Affective Engagement As A Resource In Interaction Design, Jonas Fritsch

Nordes Conference Series

This article proposes affective engagement as a possible resource when designing interactive environments. The notion of affect and affective experience as developed by Brian Massumi in cultural theory is presented as a theoretical foundation for conceptualizing experience in interaction design. In particular, it is shown how Massumi provides a non-informational understanding of affect as distinct from emotions. Instead, Massumi offers a processual and relational account of affective experience as a part of dynamic events of becoming. Through an analysis of the interactive installation Touched Echoes, the concept of affective engagement is introduced to inform the practical work when designing experiential …

Design Experiments And Design Games In A Reflective Practicum, Thomas Binder, Eva Brandt, Pelle Ehn, Tuuli Mattelmaki, Ben Matthews

Nordes Conference Series

The idea of the workshop is to share examples and experiences of using design experiments and design games in an educational setting. A second aim is to discuss foundation, methodology and the theoretical framing of such activities in design education. Last, but not least the workshop invites participants to contribute to a resource book on design experiments and design games for design educators and their students.

Why Design:Labs?, Thomas Binder May 2007

Why Design:Labs?, Thomas Binder

Nordes Conference Series

For some years I have together with my colleagues used the design lab as a shorthand description of open collaborations between many stakeholders sharing a mutual interest in design research in a particular field. We see the design:lab as a suitable and coherent format for design research organized as a participatory inquiry. Initially we did not put too much thought into calling this format a laboratory, and many colleagues have reacted to the label as foreign and awkward to design. In this article I will develop what I see as useful in this label, namely the emphasis on a transparent, …

The Social Dimension In Construction Of Designerly Knowing, Petra Falin May 2007

The Social Dimension In Construction Of Designerly Knowing, Petra Falin

Nordes Conference Series

The reflection based on literature presented in this exploratory article aims at understanding the special characteristics of knowing involved in design practice and particularly the yet somewhat undefined social dimension in its construction. Interpretation of the nature of design practice suggests that although designerly knowing is often the kind of knowing inseparable from the knower, it is not developed in individual isolation but as a result from social actions and active processes expanding and transcending personal and organizational limits. The understanding gained through varied social practices is seen as the basis for growth of designerly knowing.

Team Directed, Project Based Education: A Case Study Of An Entrepreneurial, Trans-Disciplinary, Design Studio Abroad, Helen Sanematsu May 2007

Team Directed, Project Based Education: A Case Study Of An Entrepreneurial, Trans-Disciplinary, Design Studio Abroad, Helen Sanematsu

Nordes Conference Series

This is a report from the trenches. This article offers a critique of a pilot project undertaken by Art Center College of Design, in Pasadena, California. In the summer of 2005, I (along with 1 other Art Center instructor) accompanied 14 Art Center students to participate in a unique, trans-disciplinary, design and project based “start-up” studio in Copenhagen, Denmark. The 14 design students came from various fields (the trans-disciplinary part), who were challenged to produce a professional project (the design and project based part), with no pre-existing working structure (the start-up studio part). How did this project work? What was …

Mapping The Meaning Of Knowledge In Design Research, Kristina Niedderer May 2007

Mapping The Meaning Of Knowledge In Design Research, Kristina Niedderer

Nordes Conference Series

Knowledge plays a vital role in our life in that it reflects how we understand the world around us and thus determines how we act upon it. In this sense, knowledge is of particular importance for designers because they act to shape our world. Conventionally, knowledge creation has been assumed by (design) research. However developments of using practice within research have pointed to knowledge creation within and through practice. This has raised the question about the meaning, role and format of knowledge in both research and practice, and about the compatibility between both. In due course, the research presented in …

Inquiry Into Libraries: Design Approach To Children’S Interactive Library, Eva Eriksson, Peter Gall Krogh, Andreas Lykke-Olesen May 2007

Inquiry Into Libraries: Design Approach To Children’S Interactive Library, Eva Eriksson, Peter Gall Krogh, Andreas Lykke-Olesen

Nordes Conference Series

This article reports on a design process of pervasive computing installations for a children’s interactive library. The design process involved a wide range of decisive parties of the domain and the process was designed so that the collectively developed design concepts could suit the needs and interests of the many parties. Narratives and sketches were used for inquiries and communication, and the concepts and their iterations illustrate the process ofdesign and how the physical qualities of the environment and the artefacts played a central role in the development of the concepts.

In resent years the two main design schools in Denmark (Danmarks Designskole1 and Designskolen Kolding2) undergo many changes. The overall goal for both is to obtain status as a university, and they will be evaluated in this regard in 2010. Transforming a vocational school with long handicraft traditions into a research based institution for higher education is demanding. Danmarks Designskole is in the middle of this process, many activities are initiated, both employees and students are involved, and from outside representatives from various design professions. The design process has many stakeholders with various interests and opinions. The aim it is …

Super Studio: Clarity And Ambiguity In Probes, Lisa Nugent, Sean Donahue, Ilpo Koskinen May 2007

Super Studio: Clarity And Ambiguity In Probes, Lisa Nugent, Sean Donahue, Ilpo Koskinen

Nordes Conference Series

This article describes how Super Studio, an annual design class given at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, has used cultural probes not only to bring clarity to the research object, but also to shape a pre-design research space through leveraging several types of ambiguity. The research model strengthens the analysis and interpretation of data from probes, while fostering design projects that reflect the daily realities (and the desires) of the population studied. Further, it provides a specific means for reconfiguring data as design interventions through the exhibition format. As the article's case study illustrates, the fluidity of …

Types Of Fashion Design And Pattern-Making Practice, Timo Rissanen May 2007

Types Of Fashion Design And Pattern-Making Practice, Timo Rissanen

Nordes Conference Series

This article originates from a PhD research project that investigates the elimination of fabric waste from the production of clothing. Most efforts to reduce the amount of fabric waste have centred on various types of marker-making software that place the garment pieces on a length of fabric as tightly as possible. Despite these efforts, in adult outerwear on average 15 percent of the total fabric used is wasted at the cutting out stage, according to Cooklin (1997: 9). Feyerabend’s estimate is 10 to 20 percent (2004: 4), while Abernathy, Dunlop et al. (1999: 136) put the figure at 10 percent …

Nordes Conference Series

In this article Seattle Public Library designed by OMA/LMN and Sendai Mediatheque designed by Toyo Ito are investigated as specific operational modes when it comes to the relation between institution, organisation and space. These modes suggests fundamentaly different attitudes towards change and the future unknown, and where the spatial design is a key factor. This article investigates spatial design as a integral part in the shaping of institutional and organisational practices.

Abstractness Of Mediating Artifacts As Probes, Young-Ae Hahn, Judith Gregory May 2007

Abstractness Of Mediating Artifacts As Probes, Young-Ae Hahn, Judith Gregory

Nordes Conference Series

This research investigates mediating artifacts as probes that have been used to explore current and future user needs in knowledge exchange between design researchers and the users of future products and services. Four types of mediating artifacts as probes are reviewed: Design Games, Cultural Probes, Generative Techniques, and Behavioral Prototyping. Design researchers variously found the following methodological advantages of mediating artifacts: (a) eliciting situated user needs, (b) eliciting divergent perspectives and needs, (c) supporting participants’ idea generation that leads to design solution ideas, (d) documenting elicited concrete and abstract types of knowledge, (e) revealing propositional, practical and sensuous knowledge, and …

From Crafts To Commercialism: The Media Surfaces And Spoken Realities Of Industrial Design, Anna Valtonen, Toni Ryynänen May 2007

From Crafts To Commercialism: The Media Surfaces And Spoken Realities Of Industrial Design, Anna Valtonen, Toni Ryynänen

Nordes Conference Series

Industrial design is conducted in the realm of the economic world, as well as in the context of local prevailing cultural environments. This article shows how the designers present themselves, how the economical press represents industrial designers, and how these two worlds - the mediasurfaces and the spoken realities - differ from each other.

Design, Rhetoric, Knowledge: Some Notes On Grasping, Influencing And Constructing The World, Fredrik Nilsson May 2007

Design, Rhetoric, Knowledge: Some Notes On Grasping, Influencing And Constructing The World, Fredrik Nilsson

Nordes Conference Series

In order to understand, grasp and gain knowledge about the often chaotic world around us the strategies that we today know as the disciplines science, art, philosophy etc. have been developed. In contemporary discussions on the relations between research, design, science and art one can be surprised of how deep the chasms has become between different fields of knowledge. The big and urgent question is how we more consciously can elucidate, raise the status for and systematically make use of all the knowledge that is produced outside of the borders of what is considered “scientific”. A territory in where architecture …

Investigation Into Company-Specific Design Structures To Raise Design Awareness, Manuela Lackus, Mario Kolar May 2007

Investigation Into Company-Specific Design Structures To Raise Design Awareness, Manuela Lackus, Mario Kolar

Nordes Conference Series

This article focuses on design processes and the constituting structures within medium-sized and large scale companies. Intensive literature review, several cooperation projects and expert interviews revealed that there is a strong need for organisations to better understand the role of design for the success of development and production processes. Mentality differences as well as a missing knowledge in the field of design management competency could be identified as key factors for sustainable improvement.
