We’Ve Never Learned To Talk About It’: Considerations For Design Researchers To Address Intimacy And Sexuality., Yoni Lefévre, Niels Hendriks, Andrea Wilkinson

IASDR Conference Series

This paper aims to learn from existing design research literature on taboo topics to inform the development of a research project about sexual health in later life. Participatory design approaches can play a role to better understand the complexities of researching taboos and navigate in sensitive situations. A rapid literature review focused on taboos related to people’s individual sexual experiences of the body, resulted in identifying five actionable design considerations: 1) make taboos visible and interactive for people to respond to, 2) use humor to overcome the awkwardness of taboos, 3) design together on taboo subjects for more inclusive futures, …

Is Gift A Token Of Gratitude Or An Imposition Of Identity? Facilitating Positive Consequences Of Gift-Giving With Receiver-Centred Design, Houjiang Liu, Miso Kim Oct 2023

Is Gift A Token Of Gratitude Or An Imposition Of Identity? Facilitating Positive Consequences Of Gift-Giving With Receiver-Centred Design, Houjiang Liu, Miso Kim

IASDR Conference Series

Gifts are more than things; they represent and tie together human relationships. While people often treat it as a token of social interactions, the presentation of a gift could impose an identity that reflects gift-givers’ images of gift-receivers. Because gift-giving is a social behaviour situated in the cultural and economic context, the perceived value of gifts is greatly affected by the social norms and the consumer market, in which design plays an important role. In this paper, we first discuss how commodities can be transformed into gifts and what kinds of design activities influence such transformations. We found that most …

Exploring Diverse Dimensions Of Design Research And Innovation In The Changing World, Erminia D'Itria, Silvia Maria Gramegna, Xue Pei Oct 2023

Exploring Diverse Dimensions Of Design Research And Innovation In The Changing World, Erminia D'Itria, Silvia Maria Gramegna, Xue Pei

IASDR Conference Series

In today's fast-changing world, the design field has expanded to encompass many dimensions and applications. Starting with an analysis of the short papers proposed in the context of the IASDR 2023 conference, this essay delves into the fascinating range of topics, approaches, and formats covered and presented. This analysis has shed light on the different aspects of design research and innovation that drive progress in various design-related sectors. These papers collectively underscore the multidisciplinary and transformative nature of contemporary design research, demonstrating how innovation in technology and design, coupled with attention to social concerns and education, can shape a brighter …

The Agency Of Graphic Design Towards Promoting Collective Awareness Of Heritage Inscriptions: A Study On The Erosion Of Palestinian Traditional Iconography, Belal Herbawi, Abhishek Chatterjee, Heitor Alvelos Oct 2023

The Agency Of Graphic Design Towards Promoting Collective Awareness Of Heritage Inscriptions: A Study On The Erosion Of Palestinian Traditional Iconography, Belal Herbawi, Abhishek Chatterjee, Heitor Alvelos

IASDR Conference Series

This article discusses research to establish the extent of contemporary Palestinian graphic design's knowledge of traditional iconography and inclination towards its application in modern-day workflows. What new perspectives can graphic design contribute to heritage design? This paper discusses answers to these questions by examining the meanings and contents of the traditional Palestinian inscriptions by confirming those meanings and realizing the value of employing these inscriptions in the context of vibrant and developed creative industries in Palestine. Heritage has become an important research topic in recent decades and is now emerging as a priority area with research councils. Increasingly framed as …

From E-Waste To Jewellery: Creating Emotionally Durable Jewellery With The Metal Recovered From Electronic Waste, Kunning Ding Oct 2023

From E-Waste To Jewellery: Creating Emotionally Durable Jewellery With The Metal Recovered From Electronic Waste, Kunning Ding

IASDR Conference Series

It is estimated that the electrical equipment discarded in 2021 weighs more than 57 million tonnes. Less than one-fifth of this electronic waste (e-waste) is recycled. Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) are an integral component of any electronic equipment, and this is a useful type of waste due to its high metal content of nearly 30%. This practice-based research aims to explore how to transform metals recovered from e-waste using a hydrometallurgy technique (that works with metals in solution) into wearable jewellery. There are two parts unfolded in this research, one is from a technical perspective, applying electroforming that works with …

Features Of Chinese Design Research: An “Object-Paradigm” Interactive Relationship Perspective, Yuhao Jiang, Fangzhou Gu, Danhua Zhao Oct 2023

Features Of Chinese Design Research: An “Object-Paradigm” Interactive Relationship Perspective, Yuhao Jiang, Fangzhou Gu, Danhua Zhao

IASDR Conference Series

How we conceive of design research has changed significantly. Scholars have explored this topic from the perspectives of the boundaries of the influence of the design profession and the shift of design paradigms. However, research on the evolution and features of design research in China has yet to make its mark on the international design research stage. Based on the National Social Science Foundation Art Project's promotion of Chinese design research, an "Object-Paradigm" analysis framework is constructed, revealing an interactive relationship between objects and paradigms of Chinese design research: a well-defined research paradigm focuses on a particular object, and specific …

Proceedings Of Nordes 2023: This Space Intentionally Left [Blank], Vanessa Rodrigues, Carl Westin, Stefan Holmlid Jun 2023

Proceedings Of Nordes 2023: This Space Intentionally Left [Blank], Vanessa Rodrigues, Carl Westin, Stefan Holmlid

DRS Conference Volumes

This volume is the proceedings of the 10th biennial Nordes conference, hosted by Linköping University, 12 – 14 June 2023. All contributions relate in different ways to the overall theme, ‘This Space Intentionally Left [Blank]’.

A blank space—a silence, pause, interstice, gap, in-between, opening, punctuation, negative space—can be deliberately or incidentally devoid of content. A space left blank is as much an invitation to notice the void and the structure that surrounds it, as it is a question as to why and how they are per- ceived. Such absence can remind us to seek out conscious or unconscious intentions hidden …

Proceedings Of Nordes 2021: Matters Of Scale, Eva Brandt, Thomas Markussen, Eeva Berglund, Guy Julier, Per Linde Aug 2021

Proceedings Of Nordes 2021: Matters Of Scale, Eva Brandt, Thomas Markussen, Eeva Berglund, Guy Julier, Per Linde

DRS Conference Volumes

This volume is the proceedings of the 9th biennial Nordes conference, hosted by Design School Kolding and the University of Southern Denmark, 15 – 18 August 2021. All contributions relate in different ways to the overall theme, ‘Matters of Scale’.

Designers are often invited to upscale their efforts to help solve the big challenges facing our societies and the planet. But just as often, the idea of upscaling is met with a critical requirement to evaluate, document and account for design-initiated change. Otherwise, the idea easily ends up representing “the overblown claims”, as Geoff Mulgan once called them, that unfortunately …

Proceedings Of The 3rd Conference Of Doctoral Education In Design (2003), David Durling, Kazuo Sugiyama Oct 2003

Proceedings Of The 3rd Conference Of Doctoral Education In Design (2003), David Durling, Kazuo Sugiyama

DRS Conference Volumes

The 3rd conference on 'Doctoral Education in Design' was hosted by several Asian design societies in partnership with the Design Research Society, and was held in parallel with the 6th Asian Design Conference, in Tsukuba, Japan, in October 2003. The call for papers stressed an overriding theme of the 'Practice of Research'. We were particularly interested in identifying best practice, and the practical application of best practice, with a focus on organising and teaching the doctorate in design.
