La propuesta de este trabajo es abordar al universo iconográfico de las sociedades Aguada (Noroeste argentino) enfocando particularmente el análisis de las figuras compuestas y ambiguas. La idea es identificarlas, interpretarlas perceptualmente y caracterizarlas, para luego acceder a otros planos de significación que trascienden el diseño, los que parecen vincularse fuertemente al fenómeno de transformación humano-felínica.

En 1934 George Vaillant adquirió en Ahuizotla una inédita escultura de barro cuyo cuerpo contenía pequeñas figurillas hechas a molde. No sería hasta 1976 cuando por primera vez Warren Barbour, designó como host figurines o figurillas tipo huésped, a un conjunto de figurillas huecas de cerámica, en posición sedente, que contenían en su interior a otras figurillas hechas a molde que procedían de Teotihuacán. Aunque generalmente habían aparecido en entierros y depósitos de ofrendas en la antigua urbe, también existen ejemplares que proceden de lugares más distantes de Mesoamérica. La representación del ave en la iconografía Tiwanaku es parte de un conjunto de símbolos sagrados, emblemas de poder, que condensan unos conocimientos acerca de la cosmovisión y estarían vinculados a prácticas chamánicas. La imagen del ave, representada por elementos simplificados como las alas, el vuelo o los ojos, simbolizaría la capacidad de atravesar las fronteras entre los mundos, de ver lo sagrado, y expresaría la intermediación entre hombres y divinidades. Durante miles de años, los grupos humanos que habitaron esta región dejaron constancia de su presencia por medio de las pinturas y grabados que realizaron en cuevas, abrigos y rocas. El estudio interdisciplinar de este lenguaje visual puede proporcionar una valiosa información para el conocimiento de esas poblaciones. Entre otros aspectos, permite una aproximación a su pensamiento simbólico, la percepción que tenían del mundo físico y espiritual, y cómo percibieron y utilizaron el territorio en su cotidianidad.

En este trabajo se analizan piezas producidas entre los siglos VII-XI, en el valle de Hualfín (Catamarca, Argentina) con fines cúlticos y ceremoniales, que presentan una iconografía de notable complejidad. Al respecto se propone indagar: el posible significado de las imágenes metafóricas y metonímicas que articulan humanos, felinos, saurios y reptiles, en relación al poder sagrado (lo waka) y, el rol que juega cada “tradición plástica” (escultores, grabadores, pintores) en la materialización, a través de los objetos e imágenes, del orden ontológico y cosmológico vigente en las comunidades del noroeste argentino en época prehispánica.

Las figurillas del periodo Formativo (2300 a.C.-100 d.C.), de la Cuenca de México, modeladas en barro, antropomorfas y sólidas, se distinguen por ser representaciones realistas, y al parecer, algunas de ellas son versiones a escala que muestran personajes, es decir, son pequeñas esculturas inspiradas en algunos miembros de la comunidad que se destacan por sus atributos o parafernalia. Estos atributos son indicadores de un claro reconocimiento de diferenciación social, asociados con personajes que desempeñaban roles específicos dentro de la sociedad y que, al parecer, son recreaciones de jugadores de pelota.

Lena Bjerregaard, editor and compiler of this volume, was the conservator for these materials from 2000 to 2014, and she worked with many international researchers to analyze and publicize the collection. This book includes seven of their essays about the museum’s holdings – by Bea Hoffmann, Ann Peters, Susan Bergh, Lena Bjerregaard, Jane Feltham, Katalin Nagy, and Gary Urton. This thesis explores images of sea serpents in nineteenth-century print culture that reflect an ongoing effort throughout the century to locate, capture, catalogue, and eventually poeticize the sea serpent. My research centers primarily on the sea serpent craze that occurred within the New England and Mid-Atlantic states between 1845 and 1880 and examines the following three prints: Albert Koch’s Hydrarchos, a fossil skeleton hoax, printed in an 1845 advertisement by Benjamin Owen, a book and job printer; an 1868 Harper’s Weekly illustration titled The Wonderful Fish; and Stephen Alonzo Schoff’s etching, The Sea Serpent from 1880, based on …

Landscapes such as the Great Plains have been described as lacking human scale. This study developed a quantitative model of human scale and compared it with viewers' perceptions of visual structure. Visual structure was selected from the physical features of Otoe County, NE, forming boundaries, found as ground textures, vegetative screens, and topographic breaks and was depicted in photographs of landscape scenes. The model used and tested nine classes of scale based on grain and extent of the photos rated by viewers against those from the model. Much of the early work was ethnological in character, a consequence, perhaps, of the late preservation of tribal life in the area.
