This essay delves into the themes of and motivations for Thomas Cole’s series of paintings, The Course of Empire. Through an analysis of the different rhetorical appeals and fallacies employed by Cole in the series of paintings, the deeper meaning behind the works comes to light. This analysis serves as a bridge between the environment the paintings were created in almost two hundred years ago, and the contemporary global landscape, which is still in need of its lessons, even so many years later.

In the era of Climate Change, many are concerned that the end of the Anthropocene, or the end of the era of human life on Earth, is upon us. Western European colonialism and its subsequent systems (settler-colonialism, colonial-capitalism, and globalization - sometimes termed “neocolonialism”) have all been implicated in contributing to unsustainable behaviors linked to accelerating climate change. In searching for possible solutions, some have called for listening to Indigenous Peoples, citing ethics of sustainability found among many Indigenous cultures. Multiple studies have been published worldwide, showing the slow or no adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies. Factors such as high costs, unproven technologies, integration, and others impacting the adoption are areas of concern. Readiness is an important factor that impacts adoption. This paper explores three Archeology Museums (Historic St. Mary’s City, James Madison’s Montpelier, and the American Museum of Natural History), their attempts at addressing the colonial narratives that museums are built on, and how the Covid-19 pandemic and protests over George Floyd’s death affected these projects. I place a special effort on the online presence of these museums, as this is the main way visitors interacted with the museums during the pandemic. While drawing on mythology and a literary history that associated women with death as well as creativity, Edgar Allan Poe and Sylvia Plath experimented with binary oppositions such as masculine/feminine, composition/decomposition, and death/(re)birth. They gained inspiration from the same source, the dead muse, but how do they transform traditions that derive from classical and medieval literary precedent, perhaps in ways that are inherently critical of patriarchal modes of gender dynamics? Why is Poe fixated on a feminine dead muse while Plath is inspired by what she calls her “father-sea-god muse”? How do both authors represent the female body, and how …

What happens to a library in the desert? How does it transform as a material object under these pressures, and what might these transformations tell us about its capacity for bearing and registering history? This article considers these questions in relation to the artist Noah Purifoy’s found-object installation Library of Congress, one of approximately thirty works that make up the ten-acre space of the Noah Purifoy Desert Art Museum of Assemblage Art in Joshua Tree, California. Various mediums explore culture, class, collective memory, identity, and erasure. While resisting institutional and systemic boundaries between disciplines my practice actively seeks fluidity between media. El tlacuache es un animal importante en la mitología mesoamericana y se le menciona principalmente al hablar de periodos tardíos. Sin embargo, en el Preclásico, periodo más antiguo de la época prehispánica, y en particular en las colecciones de Tlatilco, el tlacuache está ampliamente representado en la cerámica, por lo que pudo haber tenido un papel relevante dentro del sistema de creencias de estas comunidades tempranas. Se reflexiona sobre el papel social de la mujer durante el postclásico en la península de Yucatán; se utiliza como testimonio el Códice Madrid a partir de la información que ofrecen las figuras femeninas que aparecen representadas en 27 almanaques y en el cosmograma de las páginas 75-76. El porcentaje de figuras femeninas (10,15%), así como las funciones que desempeñan en las distintas escenas, indican que la mujer tiene un papel secundario, incluso pueden ser sustituidas por varones. Se muestran evidencias de un patriarcado de baja intensidad.

En el artículo «Contextualizando una colección maya olvidada proveniente de Chich’en, Cobán, Alta Verapaz, Guatemala», publicado en las Actas del Congreso Internacional sobre Iconografía Precolombina, Barcelona 2019, se presenta una colección de objetos arqueológicos mayas adquirida por la Universidad de Gante en 1895. Se describen brevemente los antecedentes de la colección, el sitio arqueológico de proveniencia y su contexto geográfico, histórico y religioso. Incluye además una selección de objetos y un breve análisis de los elementos iconográficos de la cerámica. This dissertation examines philosophical posthumanism as a means for critical analysis of the interaction between humans and nonhuman androids in select science fiction cinematic universes. The interaction is analyzed through several facets, notably the interactions between humans and nonhuman androids, particularly as interactions between the human and nonhuman are often sites of violence. Chapter one is an introduction. Chapter two describes the development of philosophical posthumanism from humanism, also including an analysis of philosophical posthumanism, and how it can be used as a critical lens. Sin embargo, fueron las mujeres pertenecientes al pueblo llano las que generaron un mayor número de documentos durante el Perú colonial. En los archivos potosinos nos encontramos con numerosos documentos notariales que registran sus transacciones económicas, inversiones en inmuebles, contratos de trabajo, testamentos y conflictos comerciales variados. Un pequeño número de vasos de la cultura Moche (costa norte de Perú, 0-600 d.C.) representan figuras danzantes con pintura de líneas finas. En este breve ensayo se presenta una pieza inédita con este tipo de decoración, la botella Balzarotti. Revisando el repertorio iconográfico de esta pieza, avanzo algunas hipótesis sobre la ocasión de las danzas representadas y los contextos de producción y utilización de este tipo de botellas.

Estos pueblos se desarrollaron en la región comprendida hoy por parte de México y América Central, caracterizados por algunos elementos culturales comunes, como el uso del calendario, el cultivo del maíz, los sacrificios humanos y un estilo artístico con rasgos únicos. Ychsma is one of the lesser-known textile styles of the central coast of Peru that date to the late periods. In this article, fragments of brocaded mantles from an Ychsma grave context, which is dated to the Late Horizon (1476-1532 A.D.) by the presence of an Inca plate, are described and illustrated. The mantles, which are characterized by certain technical features, images, colors and patterns of repetition, are used to identify further examples in museum collections. Este capítulo estudia el pigmento conocido como azul maya a partir de las fuentes históricas sobre la cultura náhuatl prehispánica, específicamente la Historia universal de las cosas de Nueva España de Bernardino de Sahagún. La obra sahaguntina posibilita la identificación del nombre del azul maya en náhuatl, al mismo tiempo que contribuye a reconstruir su simbolismo en Mesoamérica, en particular, entre los nahuas. Asimismo, el capítulo explica por qué los datos contenidos en la Historia de Sahagún sugieren que el pigmento no era producido en el Valle de México, sino que llegaba ya manufacturado a manos de los artistas nahuas. …
