The Superintendent's Point Of View Concerning Music In The High Schools Of Washington State, Morris Ray Pedersen

A common philosophy of administrators and music educators should be prerequisite for a successful music program. This philosophy should permit enough flexibility to allow for individual differences and yet be rigid enough to encompass general education needs and goals. It can only be shared through communication. The place of music within the curriculum will be understood through this communication between the music educator and the chief administrator. It shall be the purpose of this study to encourage the shared philosophy and communication relationship between school music educators and their administrators.

This being the case, an investigation of instructional materials for the violin comprises the major portion of this writing. The period covered is form 1523 to around 1800.

Even though the cadenza occupies a small place in the total music literature, it is a sort of microcosm of music. It would be impossible to make a study of the cadenza without completely understanding the concerto and related forms of music. An historical study such as this can lead to deeper understanding of the music to be performed.

Beethoven has often been accused of writing vocal music which exceeds some normal limitations of the voice. Such unfortunate accusations result in many singers avoiding his vocal music. Through means of historical evidence presented in this paper, through an examination of An die ferne Geliebte and its performance, the writer hopes to dispel some of this misunderstanding of Beethoven's vocal music.

In the composition of this Mass the composer was faced with several alternatives in the selection of a suitable musical style. These choices were narrowed to include (1) "traditional" or "romantic"; (2) "pop"; or "jazz"; (3) "folk-mass"; or (4) avant garde. The ultimate choice was a synthesis, consisting of devices from fourteenth century music, and elements of contemporary style.

The purpose of the study was to develop a theory of the aural perception of simultaneous musical bitones, called vertical or harmonic intervals. The study was specifically concerned with: (1) formulating a theory of vertical interval perception, (2) documenting the psychological premises of the theory, ( 3) implementing the theory by developing a model, (4) testing the theory by utilizing the model to analyze empirical data of interval recognition errors, and (5) delineating implications of the new theory for pedagogy and research.
