The primary objective of this report is to gain an increased knowledge of the various musical styles and practices of the periods which this recital report covers. Further it seems reasonable to expect that the student will develop a greater understanding of and appreciation for the composers and compositions contained herein.

Secondary objectives include the effective implementation of the tools of music research and the logical, coherent presentation of information in a formal paper.

It is with these objectives in mind that the writer undertakes the preparation of this report.

The performer's presentation of the recital was concerned with finding the most logical order in which to play the instruments, demonstrating technique on the trombone, and improving playing technique on the french horn, baritone and tuba in an attempt to improve the performer's quality of teaching. The performer sincerely believes that any effort put forth to improve the technique on more than a major instrument will improve teaching procedures on all instruments. While preparing the master's recital the writer had three major objectives: a desire to perform music from the most important periods of clarinet literature; to demonstrate characteristics interpretations of music of each period including styles of phrasing and various types of articulation; to demonstrate the ability to control various technical, dynamic, and tone production problems on the clarinet.

The song cycle, Frauenliebe und Leben, composed by Robert Schumann to a text by Adelbert von Chamisso, is particularly effective when the complete cycle is performed. This author, performing and studying the cyrcle, found that the piano accompaniment frequently moves independently of the vocal line, though it is an integral part of the cycle. The rhythmic patterns are designed to bring out the expressive quality of the text. Harmonic devices include extensive use of chromatic alterations, irresolution of chords, and free modulation. Finally, the vocal interpretation requires a singer with considerable poetic sensitivity.

This paper examines the text, the harmonic, tonal, melodic and stylistic characteristics of the cycle Vier ernst Gesange, op. 121 by Johanne Brahms as they relate to preparation for authoritative interpretation in formal concert performance. The study includes reference to particular events in the composer's life which directly influenced his decision to compose this final vocal work. In addition specific problems to be met in vocal technique, interpretative insight and German diction are discussed.

Handel, recognized as a great Baroque composer, has had his vocal compositions performed by most serious singers. Many of these would agree that his compositions are, in general, very considerate of the singer and seldom vocally awkward. Since Handel wrote for all types of voices, most singers may find appropriate literature in his oratories. All singers should have some acquaintance with Handel's vocal compositions. Unfortunately, much of the present repertoire represents little of the bel canto techniques of the golden age of singing of which Handel was a part. One particular focus of this paper will be Praetorius' theology of music, woven of the thread of coneio et cantio, sermon and song, that runs through the prefaces and dedicatory letters to many of his works.

The overall purpose of this paper is to make available in English an introduction to the music and thought of Praetorius, since most of the primary sources and much of the secondary literature are not translated. This paper presents a survey of the scheduling, staffing and housing procedures for elementary instrumental music in selected large suburban school districts surrounding the City of Seattle, Washington. Upon comparison with other available studies and a similar survey of the Highline Public Schools, basic recommendations were made for the implementation of three alternate plans for a comprehensive elementary instrumental music program in the Highline Public Schools. The preferred recommended plan involves simultaneously team teaching with instrumental and vocal music specialists.

Ethnomusicologist Bau Graves has written about Maurice Gagnon (1927-1973): “Maurice Gagnon is remembered as a dynamic performer by those who him play. At the age of ten, he was already an ace harmonica player and could attract an audience and earn money playing in clubs. He played a repertoire of jigs and reels and also composed a number of tunes some of which he recorded as 45’s and one LP album. These recordings, released between 1964 and 1970, are a historical scarcity: only a relative handful of disks of traditional Maine Franco-American music have ever been available to the public.”

Chuck Frechette, Bill Beauchesne, and Marcel Larrivee [L to R] have performed together since 1965. They began playing for Le Club Musicale Literaire, and after adding more members, became The Mountain Dews. Their repertoire includes western and bluegrass music. Bill first heard a bass washtub on the Ted Mack Amateur Radio Hour. He figured out how to make one and how to play it. Bill was 12 when he got together with a group of neighborhood friends playing guitar, harmonica, and washboard. Their gigs included bean suppers in church basements.
