My thesis is based primarily on an examination of the pertinent literature available regarding the issue of hope in psychotherapy. My survey of the literature is grounded in the interpretive and speculative style of phenomenological research. It has not been my goal to prove or disprove anything. It has not been my desire to bring orderliness to the phenomenon under study nor to bring classification or prediction upon those who participate in therapy. The central concept of my work is to bring opposing visual elements into harmony with one another. I feel that every aspect of life is composed of contradictory components or forces: order vs. chaos, the beautiful vs. the offensive, work vs. leisure, excitement vs. stability, method vs. chance. The examples are endless. These opposing elements are components in life which need to be balanced against each other to achieve harmony and order, as opposed to strife and conflict. This thesis attempts to provide a sociological understanding of the drug use problem in the United States. The research attempts to tie the social problem of drug abuse to traditional social movement models. Herbert Blumer (1971:298) in his article, "Social Problems as Collective Behavior," stated the following: Sociologists have erred in locating social problems in objective conditions. Instead, social problems have their being in a process of collective definition. This thesis is based on conceptual research or what Campbell, et al, calls critical analysis. This type of research involves "critically evaluating theories advanced by other writers” (1982: 32). The information used in this research was gathered from the written work of a variety of thinkers who can be grouped into four categories. Brain science researchers are the people working experimentally on the questions of lateralized brain function. This group includes neurosurgeons and psychologists. Their writings consist of experimental processes and results as well as conclusions and speculations about brain function.

The first chapter of the project consists of an examination of the existing schools of literary criticism. For ease in analysis, the various schools are analyzed according to the amount of outside research engaged in by the critic, that is, research which deals with elements extrinsic to the actual text itself. At one extreme is new criticism, which argues that one need not indulge in any outside research, but simply should focus on the literature itself. In this project , the artwork of a client diagnosed as having "anorexia nervosa" is explored in terms of how her art expresses her personal conflicts and family dynamics. Since the early 1950s there has been an ever-expanding emphasis on the use of community mental health services by psychiatrists and other mental health professionals. The advent of psychotropic medications—anti-hallucinogenic drugs— made possible the maintenance of individuals in their home communities, freeing these persons from state mental hospitals. In 1950, 405 out of every 100,000 persons in the United States were confined to mental institutions; by 1970, only 214 persons per 100,000 population were in mental hospitals (Kramer, 1977:3).

This paper identifies the developmental stages in children' s art and demonstrates the necessity of having a developmental art program in the kindergarten through sixth grades. The art program should be one that provides for the students ' needs to express themselves creatively and appropriately at each age . The act of creative involvement will allow children to refine their motor and perceptual skills, help them to express their emotions freely, and enable them to cope with their individual growth patterns.

The Danish American Heritage Society has as one of its objectives to "encourage Danish American expression in the arts, humanities, and social sciences." It is to be hoped that the Danish American Heritage Society will have more luck in its endeavors to promote the arts than did another organization with somewhat similar aims. I refer here to Dansk Folkesamfund (Danish People's Society) and the abortive attempt to launch an art committee under its auspices in 1897.
