This project is a study in designing a unit for elementary students that combines art with mathematics to prove art can be used to assist teaching as well as be a subject on its own and to teach math processes. The purpose of this project is to engage with the gay community from another country and to channel my understandings into an original art piece, a collage. A primary focus of this project is to understand the gay community in Buenos Aires, Argentina to gain insight into the culture that gay men are living in this country. The Efficacy Of Disease-Model Treatment For Substance Abusers, Steve J. Conway

Participatory observation and staff interviews were utilized to identify the goals and treatment modalities used by the Family Recovery Services (FRS) program. FRS employs the disease model to define certain behaviors as addictions. A questionnaire was developed and administered to former patients of the program. A large group of patients were not currently following the prescribed treatment of participation in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), which was the paramount element of the remedy imposed by the FRS program. These individuals reported cessation of substance abuse and improvement in major life areas; however, this would not be interpreted as a successful outcome by …

This thesis undertakes a comparative, historical examination of the structural preconditions under which two instances of anti-systemic mobilization occurred (the US Woman Suffrage Movement and the Twentieth Century US Environmental Movement). After a comprehensive examination of the relevant literature covering social movements and related aspects of the social scientific literature, a systematic methodology for this kind of study is developed. The methodology is then applied to the examination of the two historical situations. The comparative examination concludes that key aspects of the literature provide accurate expectations with regard to the interactions of macro-social factors with movement genesis. The works of art in my graduate exhibition reflect historical and personal influences on my life. The show includes 40 oil paintings (predominately oil pastels) and five watercolors. The works presented are divided into several categories: Genre paintings, Impressionistic paintings, the Boston Series, Figure paintings , Series in White, Still Lifes, the Luminist group, and Watercolors.

The inspirations for the paintings are my personal life experiences and, in some cases, the pieces represent my heritage. Renditions are derived from many styles and artists . However, Luminists, Romanticists and Impressionists are the greatest influences. The show will hang in the Hendren …

To accomplish an analysis of the meaning of the snake in two distinctly different cultures, I have chosen to illustrate and compare snake myths and symbolism in Western folklore, literature, religion (The Bible and Christianity) and psychology with those myths and symbols of snakes in what we might call non-Western cultures. In these non-Western cultures (specifically the Yurok culture of Northwestern California), data will be derived from the analysis of mythology, literature, religion and specific anthropological ethnographies. Aesthetics is a branch of philosophy, which attempts to define art using a set of purported characteristics that, when applied to particular pieces, will aid in making discriminations between art and non-art. Aesthetics also traditionally examines the creation, appreciation, and criticism of art. Theories of aesthetics are constructed to assist one in making judgments as to whether or not a piece is art or is beautiful. Ideally, theories serve two primary tasks. The first is to provide an explanation, which will aid in separating out those items not covered in the scope of the theory. Also, theories are used as …
