Tea Bowl: Imperfect Harmony, Gretchen Mehring
Tea Bowl: Imperfect Harmony, Gretchen Mehring
Exhibit Catalogues
Exhibition catalog for Tea Bowl: Imperfect Harmony, a traveling exhibition. "These tea bowls, with their intimate scale and individual personalities, simultaneously offer an appreciation of the past and the contemporary. The subtle beauty of traditional-style bowls contrasts with the more exuberant contemporary idiom, raising an awareness of the role that art has, and can play, in everyday life. As we approach the millennium in an age of mass production, consumption, and get-it-to-go attitudes, the words of Kakuzo Okakura are still relevant, "Do we not need the tea room more than ever?"

Just Use It: The Consumer Culture, Advertising, And Basketball, Brian W. Eisenhauer
Just Use It: The Consumer Culture, Advertising, And Basketball, Brian W. Eisenhauer
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The modem sport spectacle is a phenomenon with complex and intricate ties to the consumer culture and systems of self expression based on the consumption and subsequent displays of commodities and their sign values, the images advertisers couple with commodities. Perceptions of sport subcultures, as well as of sport itself, are intricately connected to the images and significations utilized by the advertising media to market commodities. This inquiry explores this relationship by incorporating postmodern interpretations of the mass media and the systems of commodity circulation and self expression facilitated by the consumer culture as they influence and are influenced by …

How Far Have We Come?: Involvement In Feminism As A Function Of Age In The Lesbian Community, Melanie J. Coddington
How Far Have We Come?: Involvement In Feminism As A Function Of Age In The Lesbian Community, Melanie J. Coddington
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This thesis explores current and historical definitions for both feminism and lesbianism. Throughout the “Second Wave” of feminism, lesbianism was viewed as the ultimate form of female empowerment. Today, fewer women are choosing to label themselves feminists, while there may be more lesbians “out” than ever before. Since the connection between lesbianism and feminism seems weaker today, I compared a wide age range of lesbians in terms of their feminist identification in a rural college town in Northern California (granted exempt status from Humboldt State University’s Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects in Research). According to my research on …

Introduction
Abstract art is stripped bare of other things in order to intensify its rhythms, spatial intervals, and color structure, a process of emphasis. - Robert Motherwell
The renowned Abstract Expressionist artist Robert Motherwell (1915-1991), best known as a painter, produced a remarkable body of works on paper. His drawings, prints, and collages show an intimate side of his visual sensibility and reveal the very personal "handwriting" of the artist as he responded to the subtleties of paper, both as a medium and …

Songs And Stories That Only You Know: Multiplicity, Meaning, & The Metaphorical Bridge, Matthew Haggett
Songs And Stories That Only You Know: Multiplicity, Meaning, & The Metaphorical Bridge, Matthew Haggett
Dissertations and Theses
The thesis report will serve as a companion for the body of work that is the bulk of the thesis project. The theme of the thesis project is "the bridge". "The bridge" is a metaphor for meaning occurring through context. It is present on many levels. It will implicit in much of the discussion. I will include themes such as the play of differing scales, the ambiguous line between part and whole, and the reasons for the book format . Specific imagery that occurs repeatedly in the work, like architecture and knots, will be explained in terms of its sources, …

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
As my major is Art with an emphasis in Graphic Design, and my minor is English, with Departmental Honors and a focus on poetry, my Honors Senior thesis, ARTiculation, exists as a link between these two arts. This collection of essays explores the similarities and relationships between painting and poetry, and the influences each has on the other. The format in which I have chosen to present my writing in is editorial layout of periodical publication, a medium of communication where the visual and written arts overlap in technique and style.
