The primary purpose of this study was to test the general hypothesis that there is a difference in attitudes and perceptions between women entering nursing recently and women who entered nursing fifteen or more years ago. In the past the only professions women generally entered without recrimination were teaching, secretarial and nursing. Today ample opportunities throughout the employment market are emerging. In addition, the available jobs now offer more satisfaction, autonomy and higher salaries than ever before. This raises the question of why women still enter the nursing field. Clinical observations and empirical evidence have traditionally suggested that Adjustment and Post Traumatic Stress Disorders for military veterans are directly linked to specific stress-creating moments. Using a more sociological based perspective, this study sought a connection between exposure to the military total institution and its’ influence on veteran readjustment upon discharge. This study utilized literature with a focus on PTSD, marginality and total institutions. Coupled with the interviewing of 30 military veterans within an interpretive interactionist framework, this study was able to show a link between entry, interaction, and exit of the military total institution, and a sense of marginality …

This thesis is a review of literature relating to the concept of sustainability. Political and philosophical underpinnings of the current use of the terms ‘sustainability’ and ‘sustainable development’ are discussed. The Malthusian debate over ‘natural limits’ is identified as the starting point for the development of the modern concepts. The debate is traced from Malthus’ Essay on Population to the present day. The contemporary debate is then explored in greater depth, focusing on economics, environmental ethics and technology, leading to the conclusion that what underlies current problems identified as ‘environmental’ is a culture based on domination. Acquaintance Rape: A Baseline Assessment At Humboldt State University, Kristi Segerstrom Krueger

One-hundred-eighty-seven Humboldt State University campus community members (115 females, 72 males) participated in a baseline assessment of acquaintance rape. Using a survey questionnaire composed of closed- and open-ended questions, this study polled the campus community’s perception of acquaintance rape at Humboldt State University, including the efficacy of information dissemination and campus services. Sixty-eight percent of the respondents perceived acquaintance rape as a problem on campus. Fifty-nine percent had not heard or seen information on acquaintance rape. Only seventeen percent of the sample indicated that the campus administration was effective in executing policies and procedures on acquaintance rape. This study clearly …

The purpose of this thesis is to compare the motivations of rescuers during the 1992 Los Angeles civil unrest with the heroic rescuers of Jews in Nazi-occupied Europe—who were interviewed by the Altruistic Personality and Prosocial Behavior Institute. The in-depth interviews obtained from the Holocaust rescuers and the 1992 Los Angeles rescuers focused primarily on the motivating factors, that is, why did these ordinary people risk their lives to save diverse others. We asked in the open-ended questionnaire such questions as: "Tell me in your own words why did you get involved in this activity (in this rescue)?" In addition …

Much of the current literature defending or attacking the introduction of multicultural education into the curriculum has centered on the debate around competing ideologies. By staying within these ideological parameters the debate has failed to address the more important underpinnings of the debate. This thesis seeks to review in depth the literature addressing the debate on multicultural education and suggest that the central underpinning is the contested power to produce, control, and legitimate knowledge. "Theories and Methods of Alternative Dispute Resolution," is one of three courses offered by the Center for Resolution of Environmental Disputes (CRED) in partial fulfillment for the Mediator Certificate Program. This is a self-paced reading course designed to provide mediators with a broad background in the theoretical basis of conflict resolution and to explore a variety of frequently employed ADR methodologies. This two-volume curriculum package contains an "Instructor Guide" detailing course objectives and administrative organization and a "Student Guide," which encompasses five (5) topic modules and the required assignments provided to the course participants.
