Sinkretisme Dalam Slametan Ritual Ulur-Ulur, Luqman Hakim, M. Yoesoef
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
This research aims to explain the hidden narrative in the slametan of the ulur-ulur ritual at Telaga Buret, Sawo Village, Campurdarat District, Tulungagung Regency. In 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, the long sequences of ulur-ulur rituals were summarized by only conducting slametan. This indicates that the main foundation of the ulur-ulur ritual is slametan. To find the core ideology of slametan, this study employed the ethnographic approach. Data were obtained through participatory research and in-depth interview. The collected data were then transcribed and analyzed using related theories. This research shows that in slametan, syncretic narratives are beautifully woven into the …

This article focuses on the volcanic eruptions in Priangan, West Java, in the first half of the nineteenth century. Even though volcanic eruptions are natural occurrences, their impacts on human lives are viewed as historical events. While such disasters caused damage and misfortune to those directly affected, some people may also use them as a source of inspiration to seek knowledge. Moreover, eruptions occurring in an area were, to a certain extent, considered as a threat to the colonial authorities. Using contemporary news, official reports, and diaries, this research analyzes the relationship between natural events and its surrounding social and …

This study examines the concept of coming out as part of queer narrative within Shimanami Tasogare (2015), a manga by Kamatani Yūki. Although coming out has become an important concept within LGBTQ, previous related research tends to see coming out as a one-time achievement. This study analyses the significance of coming out in Shimanami Tasogare by using the queer narrative approach. This study applies Klein et al.’s theory (2015) which argues that coming out is a dynamic and non-linear social process. This study uses text analysis and compositional interpretation (Rose, 2001) as research method. Results show that coming out plays …

Totemism is a belief in an animal or plant’s guiding spirit that is linked to a person’s character and destiny. Totemism manifests itself in tattoos as body decoration and symbols of hope, such as Yakuza tattoos (irezumi). This research aims to reveal the representation and meaning of totemistic irezumi worn by three Yakuza characters (Kazuma Kiryuu, Akira Nishikiyama, and Goro Majima) in two Yakuza-themed game series: Yakuza 0 (2015) and Yakuza Kiwami 1 (2016). These games provided the primary data in the form of images and conversations. Ricoeur’s hermeneutic theory was applied to examine the data, along with …

DMs are words used by speakers to express their feelings and view about the contents of a conversation to a speech partner. The purpose of this study was to analyze the form, meaning, and function of the word geurae as a DM in Korean conversations. This literature study is linguistics description …

Bananas Vs. Coffee: Why Did One Instigate Violence And The Other Community?, Sydney Stark
Bananas Vs. Coffee: Why Did One Instigate Violence And The Other Community?, Sydney Stark
Undergraduate Research Symposium
Violence. Nationalism. Racism. A community ripped apart by multinational corporations. These are likely not the words and ideas associated with bananas. However, in Costa Rica and other South American countries, these words only begin to describe the history surrounding this fruit. Community. Fair Trade. Globalization. A nation brought together by a simple drink. These words all describe none other than our beloved drink coffee. Costa Rica relies heavily on the exports of coffee and this crop has actually helped produce an entire subculture, known as café cultura, which promotes community and belonging. But why are these two crops vastly …

Women Are Depicted As Independent And Courageous In The Bible, Taylor Boaz
Undergraduate Research Symposium
This study examines the portrayal of women in the Bible, focusing on their depiction as courageous and independent figures. While traditional interpretations often highlight the subordinate roles of women, closer examination reveals a nuanced narrative that showcases their strength, resilience, and autonomy. Through analysis of key biblical stories such as those of Eve, Deborah, and Ruth, this study elucidates instances where women defy societal norms, exhibit remarkable courage, and take active roles in shaping their destinies. These women challenge conventional gender roles and emerge as influential agents in biblical narratives, demonstrating qualities of leadership, determination, and faith. By shedding light …
Jefferson Barracks Post Theater: A Place For People To Gather, John Granicke
Jefferson Barracks Post Theater: A Place For People To Gather, John Granicke
Undergraduate Research Symposium
The Jefferson Barracks Military Post had a rich and extensive history during its 120 years as an active military installation. The Post Theater was just one aspect of everyday life at Jefferson Barracks. This project is part of a collection of historic research blogs about Jefferson Barracks done in collaboration with St. Louis County Parks. The blogs will soon be available to view on the Jefferson Barracks County Park website.
The story of the Jefferson Barracks Post Theater begins with the Old Post Theater, which was built during World War I. From 1933 to 1944, four more post theaters were …

"Don't Be Afraid, Just Take It Easy": Genocide And Destruction In Bosnia, Thomas Sarsfield
Undergraduate Research Symposium
During the twilight hours of the Cold War, Yugoslavia was thrown into a full-blown political and economic crisis that resulted in its dissolution. Long-simmering ethnic tensions boiled over as former Yugoslav republics began declaring independence. After its secession from Yugoslavia in 1992, Bosnia and Herzegovina rapidly descended into a brutal war between Bosnian Muslim, Croat, and Serb ethnic groups. Serb troops engaged in widespread atrocities against Bosnian Muslims and Croats including mass murder, rape, and forced expulsion, which collectively amount to genocide. While UN peacekeepers were dispatched to establish safety zones in Bosnia and Herzegovina, their efforts were stymied by …
The Impact Of Art As A Catalyst For Social Change, Bob Madden
The Impact Of Art As A Catalyst For Social Change, Bob Madden
Undergraduate Research Symposium
In today's dynamic socio-cultural landscape, the intersection of art and societal practices serves as a pivotal nexus for fostering understanding, empathy, and progress. Art transcends mere aesthetic expression; it becomes a powerful medium through which individuals engage with and critique the world around them. At the beginning of my studies on the UMSL campus, I very quickly realized the impact that the arts could have to make a difference in the world around me. Connecting with several groups both on campus and off such as the Make a Wish Foundation, United Way, Faces not Forgotten and The Red Circle we …

Stalin's Collectivization: Effects Of Failure, Irina Biedenstein
Undergraduate Research Symposium
Collective farming had a major impact on Soviet History, especially when it comes to economics, loss of life, and the creation of a nation. The government, under Joseph Stalin, pushed for the idea of collective farming, with great cost to the soviet people, and eventually abandoned it as a major disappointment and a failure.
Nazi Policies Towards Slavs: Origins, Implementation, And Contradictions., Jesse Mulherin
Nazi Policies Towards Slavs: Origins, Implementation, And Contradictions., Jesse Mulherin
Undergraduate Research Symposium
Over the course of WW2, Slavic peoples in Eastern Europe faced exterminatory policies at the hands of the occupying Nazi forces. These policies included forced starvation, mass deportations, large scale executions, and slave labor. In many regards, these policies were not sudden inventions on the part of the Nazis, but rather policies with roots in German history. Moreover, in practice, Nazi policies towards Slavic peoples were often wildly inconsistent and contradictory.

Lives Away From Home And Precarious Writing As Life: Reading Bienvenido Santos’S Postscript To Saintly Life, Ivan Emil A. Labayne
Lives Away From Home And Precarious Writing As Life: Reading Bienvenido Santos’S Postscript To Saintly Life, Ivan Emil A. Labayne
Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance
Towards the end of his writing career, Bienvenido Santos published two autobiographies, Memory’s Fictions and Postscript to Saintly Life—a departure in a writing life mostly devoted to penning fictional works. This paper focuses on the last autobiography which mainly looks at Santos’s experiences as a pensionado in America. It pays attention to how Santos writes about his Philippine home while in exile, taking part in a program that is part of the American colonial period. The range of Santos’s emotions—with shame and pride on both ends—while abroad is also examined. How these emotions were manifested in the book served …

Isagani Cruz And His Fiction: A Footnote To The “Deconstructive Effect Of Feminist Materialism On The Newly-Discovered Cordillera Archives”, Isidoro M. Cruz
Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance
A cursory reading of Isagani R. Cruz’s literary theory and criticism on one hand, and his fiction on the other, suggests a disparity between Cruz as a scholarly literary critic and Cruz as a fictionist of stories “for adults only”; however, a detail in one of his short stories in his book, Father Solo and Other Stories for Adults Only, arouses a critical suspicion that his fiction is actually cultural criticism masquerading as irreverent or obscene fiction, so that the critic and the fictionist are one. That detail is found in “Once upon a Time Some Years from Now,” …
Marginal Voices, Silenced Annotations: Notes On The Life Of Edith L. Tiempo, Cris Barbra N. Pe
Marginal Voices, Silenced Annotations: Notes On The Life Of Edith L. Tiempo, Cris Barbra N. Pe
Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance
The popular version of National Artist for Literature Edith L. Tiempo is that she holds a central position as the literary matriarch of the Philippines. However, little is known about her background as a partly tribal (indigenous) woman. This paper proposes that biography can be a form of intervention to recuperate silenced narratives and marginal lives. Drawing from the ideas of the Geneva School of Consciousness, biography can be seen as a form of reading, where latent images in an author’s works can be made manifest and reveal hidden narratives in the author’s life. Edith’s life and works yield images …

Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance
The Ecocritical Erotic In Marjorie Evasco's "Elemental", Jose Kervin Cesar B. Calabias
The Ecocritical Erotic In Marjorie Evasco's "Elemental", Jose Kervin Cesar B. Calabias
Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance
This brief article explores the critical entanglements of nature, matter, and the human body in Marjorie Evasco’s poem “Elemental.” Through ecocritical erotic writing, the text establishes the “trans-corporeal” relationships between human desire and the natural environment, the language of the erotic and the craft of poetry, and the writer and the task of ecofeminist writing. Ultimately, this essay suggests that the text and the author engage with the ba’i as an indigenous source of femininity, charting a direction toward native Philippine ecofeminism.
