Mouloud Mammeri Dans La Bataille D’Alger, Hend Sadi
Mouloud Mammeri Dans La Bataille D’Alger, Hend Sadi
Journal of Amazigh Studies

Journal of Amazigh Studies

Complainte De Hadjila Azem, Aknine Arab
Complainte De Hadjila Azem, Aknine Arab
Journal of Amazigh Studies

Afrofuturisms : Ecology, Humanity, And Francophone Cultural Expressions, Isaac Vincent Joslin

An exploration of Francophone African literary imaginations and expressions through the lens of Afrofuturism
Generally attributed to the Western imagination, science fiction is a literary genre that has expressed projected technological progress since the Industrial Revolution. However, certain fantastical elements in African literary expressions lend themselves to science fiction interpretations, both utopian and dystopian. When the concept of science is divorced from its Western, rationalist, materialist, positivist underpinnings, science fiction represents a broad imaginative space that supersedes the limits of this world. Whether it be on the moon, under the sea, or elsewhere within the imaginative universe, Afrofuturist readings of …

LSU Master's Theses
This body of work serves as an investigation into the concepts and burdens that, as a female millennial, impact me regularly. As the door to my education closes, I turn to a much bigger world with endless possibilities and responsibilities. With these overwhelming prospects, I find myself reflecting on how our society has progressed and worsened to arrive here today. I continue to question the passing down of systemic burdens, politics, and gender roles of women in the 21st century. Eve Leaving the Garden is a collection of textile works, photographs, and sculptures that serve as an exploration of …

Prehistoric Hunter-Gatherers In The Philippines—Subsistence Strategies, Adaptation, And Behaviour In Maritime Environments, Alfred Pawlik, Riczar Fuentes
Sociology & Anthropology Department Faculty Publications
Archaeological research in the Philippines has produced a timeline of currently over 700,000 years of human occupation. However; while an initial presence of early hominins has been securely established through several radiometric dates between 700 ka to 1ma from Luzon Island; there is currently little evidence for the presence of hominins after those episodes until c. 67 to 50 ka for Luzon or any of the other Philippine islands. At approximately 40 ka; anatomically modern humans had arrived in the Philippines. Early sites with fossil and/or artifactual evidence are Tabon Cave in Palawan and Bubog 1 in Occidental Mindoro; the …
Lingua Mortium: The Case For Classical Language Studies, Kadee Swanson
Lingua Mortium: The Case For Classical Language Studies, Kadee Swanson
COD Library Student Research and Award Symposium
In recent decades, the world has seen an overall decrease in participation and programs for Latin and ancient Greek language studies in favor of modern languages with more of a “practical” application. This essay means to assert the continued relevance of classical language studies whilst simultaneously acknowledging and exploring the socio-economic barriers facing potential learners. The prevalence of Latin and ancient Greek in English and other Romance languages and the academic advantage associated with learning the languages makes an argument for their modern purpose. However, issues of classism and elitism are intertwined with the learning of classical languages in academia. …

Every year, technology of all mediums seems to make its way further into our lives. Offering unparalleled value in the workplace and classroom, as well as entertainment in our personal lives, it’s no wonder the world is becoming digital. However, this rapid digitalization may come at a hefty price. As technology becomes more integrated into daily life, mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and addiction are on the rise. This research paper aims to explore the correlations between technology use and mental health, asking the question: to what extent is excessive technology use contributing to the mental health crisis? …
The Efficacy Of A Carbon Tax In Modern-Day America, Paige Adkins
The Efficacy Of A Carbon Tax In Modern-Day America, Paige Adkins
COD Library Student Research and Award Symposium
Exploring how effective a carbon tax in the United States would be when considering the social, economic, and political factors its legislation would harbor. Delving into five articles and data analysis through a lens of critical thinking, the bias in studies conducted about the tax is examined, and further external implementation factors are considered. Flaws in scientific reasoning and inconsistencies among sources are discussed, and taken into consideration when determining a carbon tax’s efficacy. Driven by logic, these sources are put under the microscope to ultimately determine how beneficial a carbon tax would be without skewed opinions shaping its conclusion. …

For my project in Honors English Composition II, I researched, designed, and presented a program about the human invention of writing to an English as a Second Language class. My presentation focused on the moment of transition from Sumerian clay envelopes and tokens to cuneiform tablets. The historical portion was presented in slideshow format, and then we created clay envelopes together. Instead of placing tokens inside, each participant wrote a message to themselves on a piece of pa per and sealed them inside. The recreations serve as a source of inspiration and a reminder of the unique human achievement of …

The Connection Between An Immoral Artist And Their Work, Emily Barbosa
COD Library Student Research and Award Symposium
Art holds significant value in our lives as it expresses emotions, serves as means of communication, and presents diverse perspectives. How ever, the appreciation for art may diminish if the artist is perceived as immoral or unethical. Various philosophical, moral, and literary perspectives are employed to examine whether or not it is possible to separate an artist from their work.

I Felt Unfettered And Alive: A Musical Narrative Inquiry Into Identity Through Commissioning And Performing New Music For Solo Classical Guitar, Libby Myers
The 21st Century Guitar
This paper discusses how commissioning new music served as a means of musical narrative inquiry into the performance of the authorʼs identity. Traditionally, musicology has centred on the identities of composers; their lives, working practices and philosophies. Meanwhile, the identities of performers have remained inaudible. Challenging this conventional narrative, the commission project foregrounds experiences of identity and subjectivity of the author as performer-researcher. This paper introduces the innovative methodology of musical narrative inquiry used in this project, in which lived narratives of identity are told and re-told in collaboration with the composer to explore what it means to be, or …
Noise Peddler: An Exploration Of The 21st Century Pedalboard, Danny Bright, Lee Westwood
Noise Peddler: An Exploration Of The 21st Century Pedalboard, Danny Bright, Lee Westwood
The 21st Century Guitar
Noise Peddler is a practice-based research project exploring the 21st century guitar pedalboard as composition and performance interface. Recent growth in the guitar pedal industry has seen a notable increase in popularity of the pedal platform, expansion in the number of manufacturers, the scope of effects available, and solidification of the concept of the pedalboard. The widespread adoption of MIDI/CV control, alongside the packaging of increasingly experimental and complex processing into stompbox formats has expanded the pedalboardʼs potential as a flexible canvas for the creation of unconventional guitar sounds. Performers such as Sarah Lipstate, Nels Cline and Ed OʼBrien have …

Guitars With Ambisonic Spatial Performance (Gasp): An Immersive Guitar System, Duncan Werner, Emma Fitzmaurice, Bruce Wiggins, Matthew Hart
The 21st Century Guitar
The GASP project investigates the design and realisation of an Immersive Guitar System. It brings together a range of sound processing and spatialising technologies and applies them to a specific musical instrument ‒ the Electric Guitar. GASP is an ongoing innovative audio project, fusing the musical with the technical, combining the processing of each stringʼs output (which we called timbralisation) with spatial sound. It is also an artistic musical project, where space becomes a performance parameter, providing new experimental immersive sound production techniques for the guitarist and music producer. Several ways of reimagining the electric guitar as an immersive sounding …

Marc Ribot's Exercises In Futility, Francesca Naibo
The 21st Century Guitar
Marc Ribot (*1954), one of the most influential guitarists of the worldwide avant-garde scene, started his musical life taking classical guitar classes with the Haitian teacher Frantz Casseus, turning then to electric guitar. After decades spent mainly on electric instruments, Ribot composed and recorded Exercises in Futility, his own series of etudes for solo guitar. The collection of pieces presents fifteen compositions that are intended to be studies for classical guitarists.Between 2015 and 2020 Ribot and I collaborated to create the scores of this collection of studies, soon to be published. The purpose of this paper is to present the …

When Bonfá Meets Villa: Creative Processes In The Elaboration Of A Guitar Arrangement To Manhã De Carnaval By Luiz Bonfá (1922-2001), José D. T. Dos Santos
The 21st Century Guitar
This paper presents part of an artistic research where the focus is on elaboration of guitar arrangements. In the scope of the study here, my aim was to understand the implications of an ecological approach to music making based on the identification and use of guitar affordances. In particular, the elaboration of an arrangement of the song Manhã de Carnaval, by the Brazilian composer Luiz Bonfá (1922-2001). The process was informed by existing perspectives on arrangement (Sadie & Tirell, 2001), affordances (Gibson, 1977), tacit knowledge (Polanyi, 1966) and embodied meaning (Merleau-Ponty, 1968). Throughout the arrangement, excerpts of the music of …

Proceedings Of The 21st Century Guitar Conference 2019 & 2021
The 21st Century Guitar
This volumeʼs contributions grew from 20 of the 94 scheduled keynotes, lectures and lecture-recitals of the first and second editions of The 21st Guitar Conference. Five items stem from the inaugural edition (2019, 44 contributions) and 15 from the second edition (2021, 50 contributions).1 This conference is unique in that it is centered on contemporary guitar research, performance and pedagogy.2 Previously, guitar research had gained increased visibility thanks to the International Guitar Research Centre, launched in 2014 (Stephen Goss, President), which regularly (co-)organizes conferences on guitar research; and Soundboard Scholar, launched in 2015 (Jonathan Leathwood, Editor) ‒ currently the only …
Microtunings, Complexity, Variability: A New Sound Map For The Guitar, Pascale Criton, Caroline Delume
Microtunings, Complexity, Variability: A New Sound Map For The Guitar, Pascale Criton, Caroline Delume
The 21st Century Guitar
How do microtunings help broaden the guitar's sound map and bring new musical possibilities? In this contribution, we present a set of works in which the guitar is tuned in the 72 or 96 equal temperament. They are representative of Pascale Critonʼs writing and were composed between 1996 and 2019. Each type of tuning favors its own map of harmonic relations and the generation of specific acoustic behaviors. We examine their structural, technical and expressive peculiarities and highlight how the writing and the instrumental gesture are renewed by these tunings.
Largo Teso: The Seven Studies For Guitar By Maurizio Pisati, Maurizio Pisati, Elena Càsoli
Largo Teso: The Seven Studies For Guitar By Maurizio Pisati, Maurizio Pisati, Elena Càsoli
The 21st Century Guitar
In this contribution, composer and interpreter talk about the Seven Studies from their respective points of view. Maurizio Pisati explains how he developed a new guitar, departing from a single study and arriving at the overall formal conception through timbres, techniques and articulations; and how the soloistic studies led him to a guitarled ensemble piece. Elena Càsoli deals with issues such as the score's indications and the instrumental techniques.
Overlapping Gestural Zones And Modulation On The Fifteen-Tone Guitar, William R. Ayers
Overlapping Gestural Zones And Modulation On The Fifteen-Tone Guitar, William R. Ayers
The 21st Century Guitar
With its unconventional tuning, notation, and performance requirements, Easley Blackwoodʼs Suite for Guitar in 15- Note Equal Tuning serves as a reappraisal of both tonality (through its application of a microtonal equal temperament) and guitar performance practice (with a modified fretboard and note layout). Using concepts from the fields of transformational theory and gestural music theory, this study considers modulatory and sequential passages in two movements from Blackwoodʼs Suite. This paper demonstrates how the fifteen-tone tuning and fretboard provide a unique opportunity to recontextualize the diatonic scale and its generative interval cycles in a consistent transformational space that allows the …
New Sounds On The Guitar, Agustín Castilla-Ávila
New Sounds On The Guitar, Agustín Castilla-Ávila
The 21st Century Guitar
The guitar is like an orchestra, claimed Andrés Segovia many times. I completely agree with this statement. I only must add that since Segovia mentioned it last time, the orchestra has quite changed. And so has the guitar. I would like to present my different approaches as a composer to this versatile instrument. I would like to demonstrate some of the new technical resources to obtain new sounds, which I have been exploring and using on the guitar in the last few years. Due to the adaptability of the instrument, I strongly believe that the guitar will take more and …
Classical Ukulele: Redefining The Ukulele, Samantha Muir
Classical Ukulele: Redefining The Ukulele, Samantha Muir
The 21st Century Guitar
Developed in Hawaii after 1879, the ukulele was first used as a strummed instrument to accompany the human voice and traditional hula dances of Hawaii. During the 20th century, as the ukuleleʼs popularity spread, it achieved notoriety amongst comedians and entertainers. Since the millennium a new generation of players have sought to define the ukulele as a serious instrument. The classical ukulele approach emerged in 2004 and until recently focused on creating arrangements. As the first person to do a PhD on classical ukulele, my research is forward looking in its aim of creating new contemporary classical works, and backward …
