From Other And From World: Expanding The Current Model Of Existential Isolation, Roger Young Jr.
From Other And From World: Expanding The Current Model Of Existential Isolation, Roger Young Jr.
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Extant research investigating the nature of existential isolation (EI) has focused primarily on the experience of the gap between one’s mind and the minds of others (self-other EI). The general purpose of the current research was to begin exploring the experience of the gap between one’s mind and the world (self-world EI). This purpose was carried out across three studies. A pilot study confirms that self-world EI is a relatively common experience that usually involves meaning violation or dissociation, and results in psychological discomfort and self-doubt. Study 1 found that self-world existential isolation produces more “EI affect” (e.g., nervous, afraid, …

The Integration Of Nouns From English And Kiswahili Into The Grammar Of Datooga Language Spoken In Tanzania, Kuria Mdoe Michael
The Integration Of Nouns From English And Kiswahili Into The Grammar Of Datooga Language Spoken In Tanzania, Kuria Mdoe Michael
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This article shows both the contact of English and Kiswahili with Datooga and how noun loans from the two languages are nativized in Datooga. Through elicitation, extraction from oral narrations and reviewing existing documents, English and Kiswahili noun loans were identified in Datooga. The article shows that, regardless of their source, loanwords from the two languages are all integrated into the Datooga noun structure in a uniform way. Phonologically, the loanwords are nativized through replacement of foreign sound with a native sound that has almost similar features in the recipient language, voicing of foreign sounds, vowel heightening and the change …
Reporting From The Angle Of Reality: A Comparative Analysis Of Sukuma Proverbs And The Social Construction Of Power Relations In Traditional Leadership, Esther Masele
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
The Sukuma comprise one of many ethnic groups which respect their traditional leadership. Even after the introduction of new authority by the independent Tanzanian government, they still exercise their traditional leadership of chiefs (Ntemi), which is purely patriarchal. However, there are more evidences from the literature, which suggest that proverbs are useful in articulating power relations in groups as what persist in the Sukuma society. Following this reason, this paper, highlights power relations resulting from the comparative analysis of traditional leadership history and Sukuma proverbs. Specifically, the paper is designed to answer two questions: How does the Sukuma traditional leadership …
Intricacies Of Translating Children’S Books In Tanzania, Mpale Silkiluwasha
Intricacies Of Translating Children’S Books In Tanzania, Mpale Silkiluwasha
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This paper interrogates the complexities that come with translating picture books in Tanzania between 2001 and 2012. A sample of four tittles written in both Kiswahili and English that are available in bookstores were selected for study. It was important that the study should involve books available in bookstores in Tanzania to ensure that these books are functional, hence making the study useful and applicable. The polysystem theory is employed to build the framework for analysing the peripheral position that Tanzanian children literature may occupy at both the national and global systems, while the Hermeneutics methodology aid in the study …

Decolonization Of Knowledge Production In African Societies: Contextual Analysis Of Language Of Instruction, Oluremi Alapo
Open Educational Resources
A discussion on knowledge independence or knowledge-production decolonization with the assumption that an epistemological base for knowledge creation exists in most African societies by drawing from indigenous praxis which includes language and history.
The background to this study highlighted the usage of colonial languages by post-colonial African Societies as the language of knowledge transfer in schools and educational institutions, to the neglect of the mother tongue and local language. This prevents an intellectual dislocation that negatively affects the identity, creativity, and works of learners.
The two major theories at the base of this paper are postcolonial theory and Lev Vygotsky’s …

Immersion Vs. Engaged Interactivity In The Autobiography Of Jane Eyre’S Storyworld; Or What We Can Learn From Paratextual Traces, Kate Faber Oestreich
English
This paper uses The Autobiography of Jane Eyre (Nessa Aref and Alysson Hall’s 2013–2014 transmedia adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, hereafter AoJE) to explore the impact of characters’ social media accounts on user interactivity and immersion. AoJE employs the powers of social media to create a modernized and fully-fledged storyworld, yet the users’ overall experience is undermined by the very strategies meant to facilitate engaged interactivity. When social media posts become sites where users not only actively seek additional content but also ‘read’ traces of other users’ interactions with the content, those traces function as paratextual commentary, creating dialogic …

Lexicalization Indicators Of Thai Words, Lena Maluleem
Lexicalization Indicators Of Thai Words, Lena Maluleem
Journal of Letters
The present study proposes quantitative measurements for the degree of lexicalization. The study suggests that degree of lexicalization can be measured using three quantitative indicators including reaction time, which represents the degree of morphosyntactic change, semantic compositionality, which represents the degree of semantic change, and usage frequency, representing the degree of change in usage. The results show that all three indicators can distinguish between non-lexicalized and highly lexicalized constructions. In addition, the findings indicate that each aspect of change in lexicalization occurs at a varying rate and time. Consequently, the degree of lexicalization of a construction cannot be represented by …
