Concern Or Control?: Gender Stereotyping And Hospitality Leaders, Bendegul Okumus, Wei Xiong, Shiyun Chen, Fang Fan

Rosen Research Review

Although most managers in the global hospitality industry are still male, an increasing number of women are taking on leadership roles. But how exactly do employees perceive masculine and feminine leadership styles? New research led by UCF Rosen College of Hospitality Management's Associate Professor Bendegul Okumus and the research team she works with looks at gender stereotypes and finds that the most successful managers, in the eyes of their staff, have a management style that combines both masculine and feminine leadership traits.

Mind The Service Gap: Lgbt+ Customers' Hospitality Experience, Heejung (Cheyenne) Ro

Rosen Research Review

Hospitality managers could be missing out by not paying enough attention to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LBGT+) guests. New research by Associate Professor Heejung Ro, UCF Rosen College of Hospitality Management, looks at this growing and valuable customer segment, and studies how sexual minority guests perceive they are welcomed by hospitality staff. In one of the first studies of its kind, Dr. Ro finds that delivering the right service experience is about more than just flying the rainbow flag.

Resilience, Nicholas D'Angelo Jun 2023

Resilience, Nicholas D'Angelo

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

On one of the busiest parkways, in the midst of a spring drought, despite the lack of soil a sunflower blooms. This tiny beacon of hope represents the enduring spirit of humanity managing to struggle through this recent global pandemic. For me as a program director, it conjures to mind my graduating family medicine residents. Due to COVID-19, they had to pull extra shifts in the hospital, flip patients in the ICU, and witnessed death on an unprecedented scale. Despite this adversity, they continue to grow professionally, thrive individually, and show the world their sunny smiling faces.

From Aura To Awra: Toward A Tropical Queer Decolonial Performativity In The Philippines, John Paolo Sarce Jun 2023

From Aura To Awra: Toward A Tropical Queer Decolonial Performativity In The Philippines, John Paolo Sarce

English Faculty Publications

If datíng is to literary texts, awra is to queer decolonial performances. From the works of Bienvenido Lumbera and Walter Benjamin, this paper discusses the queering of the term aura and how it operates in tropical performances and discourses, through beki (gay language), as awra. The sign “awra” is resuscitated from the imperial lexis and queered by the topical imagination in the Philippine media. Three media texts expound these claims: Awra Briguela’s song “Clap, Clap, Clap, Awra”; Maymay Entrata’s dance “Amakabogera”; and the noontime TV game show “Beklaban,” a portmanteau of Beki (gay) …

By All Memes, I Want To Learn Arabic: Teachers’ And Students’ Perceptions Of Using Memes In Afl Classrooms, Amani Batran

Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

As educational technology advances, teachers nowadays tend to incorporate technology into their classroom practices to enhance students’ learning and achieve better outcomes. Memes, which are pictures with texts and sometimes movements circulated mostly among social media users, are a powerful tool to reach learning goals in a fun and engaging way. Researchers explored memes’ effectiveness in various disciplines, yet the field of teaching Arabic as a foreign language (AFL) lacks investigation in this area. Therefore, this study aims to examine teachers’ and students’ perspectives on the use of memes in the classroom. This research also explores the disparities in …

A large part of our material culture is made of organic materials, and this was likely the case also during prehistory. Amongst this prehistoric organic material culture are textiles and cordages, taking advantage of the flexibility and resistance of plant fibres. While in very exceptional cases and under very favourable circumstances, fragments of baskets and cords have survived and were discovered in late Pleistocene and Holocene archaeological sites, these objects are generally not preserved, especially in tropical regions. We report here indirect evidence of basket/tying material making found on stone tools dating to 39–33,000 BP from Tabon Cave, Palawan Philippines. …

Visualizing Empire: Advancing Roman Archaeology In Sicily And Malta Through 3d Digitization And Spatial Technologies, Stephan N. Hassam Jun 2023

Visualizing Empire: Advancing Roman Archaeology In Sicily And Malta Through 3d Digitization And Spatial Technologies, Stephan N. Hassam

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation addresses the negative effects of data fragmentation and heterogeneity on the Roman archaeology of Malta and Sicily. Roman period villas in Sicily and Roman period ceramics in Malta have both been marginalized within scholarship on Roman archaeology due to historical processes, bureaucratic organizations, and different academic trajectories and cultures. Digital technologies, especially 3D digitization and spatial information are well poised to address the fragmentation of these two contexts from wider discussions on the Roman Mediterranean. The dissertation introduces two long term projects, the E-unification of the De Piro Collection (EDPC) and the Digital Atlas of Roman Sicily – …

A Novel Jazz Music Curriculum For Young Children: Results Of A Pilot Study, Jazmin D. Ghent Jun 2023

A Novel Jazz Music Curriculum For Young Children: Results Of A Pilot Study, Jazmin D. Ghent

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Jazz improvisation is known as the highest-known art form concerning improvisation due to its frequency and development of creative ideas (Feldman 1964). Research shows that the art of spontaneous creation can contribute to children’s ability to problem-solve, social and emotional well-being, and academic success into adulthood (Biasutti, 2017; Heble & Laver, 2016; Kiehn, 2003; Kuzmich, 1980; Solis, 2009). Improvisation is crucial for developmentally comprehensive music programs; however, improvisation is scarce in elementary music classrooms and curricula. For this pilot study, a group of 31 children aged 5-8 and considered at-risk participated in a study where they were randomly assigned to …

Animal Motifs On Rock Art In Papua And West Papua, R. Cecep Eka Permana, Zubair Mas'ud

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Most of the rock art in Indonesia is found at prehistoric sites, specifically caves or cliffs in South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, East Kalimantan, Maluku, Papua, and West Papua. Most rock art with animal motifs is mainly located in Papua and West Papua. Therefore, the data in this paper are mostly based on the results of research conducted during the last ten years at rock art sites in Papua Province (with hinterland and mountainous characteristics) and in West Papua Province (with coastal and archipelagic characteristics). An analysis of these animal motifs has demonstrated that lizard and fish motifs dominate rock art …

Remembering The Ladies! A Decision-Making Activity For Teaching The American Revolution, Presley Shilling, Jeffrey Byford, Deanna Owens-Mosby

The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies

This content-centered American Revolution activity encourages students to utilize Robert Stahl’s rank-order approach to promote decision-making in the social studies classroom. The incorporation of women’s contributions in the years leading up to the American Revolution influences students to analyze various perspectives surrounding this historical event. Employing Robert Stahl’s four phases of decision-making, students examine a situation and rank-order the efforts of the daughters of liberty, while investigating the political, economic, and social causes of the American Revolution. Students, individually or in groups, determine which of the seven solutions will be most effective in undermining the British and King George III’s …

Creating Law And Order: A Content-Centered Manifest Destiny Activity, Presley Shilling, Jeffrey Byford, Alisha Milam

The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies

This content activity shows how Robert Stahl’s negotiation activity approach can promote decision-making in the social studies classroom. The effects of the activity on students’ ability to replicate the actions of settlers taking the journey to the western territories in search of gold. Incorporating Robert Stahl’s four decision-making phases, students negotiate social, political, and economic issues associated with the mining town of Bodie, California. In doing so, students must, individually or in small groups, decide and prioritize a series of proposals to better the living conditions, economic struggles, and social problems that have plagued Bodie for some time.

This research explores, analyzes, and proposes an approach to develop an Arabic language learning manual for the general public, applying a qualitative method by selecting purposive sampling data from 17 Arabic learning manuals from the public book market. Results showed that Arabic language learning manuals can be divided into three main types: (1) grammar manuals (2) vocabulary manuals and (3) conversation manuals. However, each type of manual has different problems. The main problem with all types is a lack of proofreading, resulting in  typing errors. Therefore, the main approach to develop an Arabic learning manual is to refine manuscripts and …

The results revealed five types of metafictions: fiction within fiction, disclosure of fiction writing process, crossing the line between the internal world and the outside world, mimicking the traditions of fiction writing and interrupting the proceedings and humanity …
